Good Thursday and thanks for making KWC your stop for online weather. It’s north vs. south today as a southern storm throws some moisture our way. Hang in there… warmer air is on the way for the weekend and will hang around into next week. That warmer pattern is likely to grow into an active one as rounds of showers and thunderstorms crank up.
Southern and southeastern Kentucky will see the bulk of the rain today. Showers may make it to the Interstate 64 corridor, but the cutoff line is going to awfully close by. Areas of the north will see readings into the low 50s as southern Kentucky feels the chill of the 40s.
The showers will scoot on out of here late tonight and Friday morning. This will lead to improving weather from west to east during the afternoon hours. Highs will range from the 50s in the east to the low 60s across the west.
Saturday looks great with highs in the 60s under a partly sunny sky. Sunday may be a tad warmer with temps making a run at 70, but I can’t rule out a scattered shower or thunderstorm.
Temps early next week will take off and spike well into the 70s and may flirt with 80 if we can get enough sunshine. The stormy pattern I’ve been talking about continues to show up on the models and things may get a little sketchy by the middle and end of the week.
A slow moving storm system is likely to move in here during this time. Here’s how it looks on the GFS…
The European Model is similar…
That setup can lead to strong or severe storms and is one that can also put down a lot of water across our part of the world.
There is still a heck of a lot of cold air to our north and it’s going to be a battle to get that stuff to finally warm up. That battle means an active pattern this spring and early summer.
The two week GFS Rainfall map shows just how big a battle is shaping up…
Have a wonderful Thursday and take care.
70’s and maybe 80’s, thank you Lord!
As I let the dog out early this am before heading to work, a light rain falling here in Nashville. Looks like a few KY counties along the TN line are already getting showers, so Mayfield to Bowling Green to Somerset will soon need the umbrellas.
Still hasn’t rained a drop in Bowling Green! We are lucky enough to find ourselves in a small doughnut hole in the rain field.
NWS Jackson KY commemorates the April 4 1987 snowstorm (click here). I was only four years old so no real personal memory. But measurable snow fell as far south as central Alabama, including Birmingham.
Also the 1974 Super Outbreak of tornadoes. Chris Bailey has pointed out before that eastern KY had limited weather bureau coverage (including no radar) back then which may partially explain the lack of confirmed twisters in eastern KY.
No signs of any tornados though right? Just maybe thunderstorms
Thanks, Chris. I am loving the temp forecast, but I could do without so much rain. And severe storms. But that is springtime in Kentucky.
Right now, I am will just be happy to see some sunshine down here in southern KY. Winter or summer, southern KY ALWAYS gets the rain! 😉 But the warmer temps will certainly be a plus!
I hope you are not talking about cloudy skies the entire time next week, at least, not until the storm system on Wednesday gets in here.
Happy Friday Eve, everyone! Have a great day!
The NWS forecast discussion are saying ” For late Tuesday and Wednesday, chances are increasing for a significant precipitation event stretching from the southern Plains through the western Great Lakes. A deepening trough across the Plains will likely send several disturbances northeast along a pre-existing boundary. Depending on the exact location of this front, one or more episodes of convection are looking likely late Tuesday through possibly Thursday for the Lower Ohio Valley.” This means a lot of water and thunderstorms that may go severe like CB stated.

I am ready for some warmer weather and a good amount of rain in April will have stave off the kind of drought we had in last June and July. Rain in the spring and summer also equates to cooler than average temps in the summer. My favorite summers here have been 1997, 2004, and 2009–all rainy and cool.
Mid 80s and a couple thunderstorms per week makes for a good summer in my book, lets hope it works out that way?
Good radar image…showing it raining all over Bardstown, but it’s not even looking like rain??! LOL! 🙂
Todays weather reminds me of the majority of the season we just finished up
was a cool rain. was 41 degrees earlier today and raining. i dont know if it made it out lower 40s in south eastern ky.
ready for warm up thats on the way. when im tired of cold weather and snow its time to move foward to spring. ive been in spring mode for a while now, just not got to see any warm temps. coming days ahead will give us warm temps. its about time.
