Good Thursday, everyone. We have a very active weather day taking shape across the region with severe thunderstorms possible. All of this action is along and ahead of a strong cold front that has a MAJOR temperature swing with it.
A squall line of storms will slowly work eastward today. The initial action early today may weaken out some before firing back up into the afternoon and evening. Damaging wind is the main player, but large hail and isolated tornadoes can’t be ruled out.
These storms can drop a lot of water, so keep an eye on creeks and streams.
Here’s what you need to track the storms…
Track the storms here…
I will send out updates and warnings via twitter: Kentuckyweather or follow along in the twitter feed on the right side of the blog. I will also have updates on my Chris Bailey WKYT Facebook page.
Have a great Thursday and take care.
Spc has reduced us from 30% down to 15% for severe wx today. Still don’t let guard down. Here’s hopeing current line coming this way keeps things from getting to bad this evening.
Thanks Chris.
I really hope this flares up again, cause we need more than few sprinkles. I bet the clouds are helping to keep the sun out and instability lower.
Thanks, Chris. Sounds like you may have a busy afternoon and evening. When I got up this morning, it was 69 degrees at my house. That is a bit TOO warm for this time of year….hope the storms don’t get too bad. Stay safe and alert, everyone. Have a great day! After all, it’s FRIDAY EVE!!!!! 😉
More BARK than bite out of this weather threat, atleast in Frankfort area, hopefully a good soaking rain anyway, getting a little dry for early spring around this area!
Agree with every word you typed there…
Amen, brother. A few drops in Lawrenceburg so far, have not recorded ANY rain for the month of April! Don’t want to see a repeat of last years’ Late June/Early July!
Strong to severe thunderstorms? Ain’t nobody got time fuh dat.
Severe t-storm watch now in effect for central Tennessee. As CB tweeted, these t-storms could later sneak into Kentucky.
We earlier had a pretty good t-storm; was severe then weakened just below severe limits over Nashville.
Possible long-track tornado or tornado family tracking near Columbus Mississippi, now in Alabama.
Unfortunately, one tornado fatality so far in east-central Mississippi.
Very cloudy here in Greenup County all morning until past noon and I don’t think it even hit 80. The sun is out some now at 3:20 but it is still very pleasant- hope that keeps the severity of the storm in check. I’m all for rain but I just picked up an acre of twigs for the first spring mow so the wind can stay away!
I’m wondering at this point if we are even going to get significant rain out of this event in Lawrenceburg? Looks like areas to our West have been drenched all day!
Seriously wondering if it will ever start raining, ha. That rain has been hanging to our west for a good 6-10 hours. In all seriousness though, my ground is cracking a little.
Yeah! Enough rain to settle the dust with no severe weather. I’m very glad this has been a BUST of a severe weather day in Central Kentucky. I will take a busted severe weather forecast every time!
And the significant rain has already stopped. Oh well–guess I better go into drought mode, because that is what is coming!
You are right, not a good sign when the rains under achieve in early spring, hopefully this is not the start of a trend?
I hope not. The “event” is almost over and we’ve had less than 3/4 inch of rain. Now colder weather settles in and the seven day forecast only show scattered thunderstorms. I hope we get some significant rains, or this will be a repeat of last years’ June and July–where the hottest temps since 1936 were recorded!
Question:
Does anyone notice at the NWS site when you look at the non-looping radar, then put it into motion, it looks more intense when in motion than non-looping? More yellows and red when looping than non. Why?
Are you sure you’re looking at the base reflectivity and not the composite reflectivity—or, you’re looking at the same reflectivity type for the still version as you are the looped one? Non-looped radar pictures have a lot fewer frames than the animated ones do, so you’re naturally going to see a lot more yellows and reds there due to more radar frames being introduced into the mix. It’s like a flipbook—-you sit at one page and it doesn’t seem that interesting—but when you flip through it at high speed, everything catches your eye. I think it’s just a matter of perspective.
And by a “lot fewer frames,” I obviously mean non-looped radar pictures only have one frame. lol
at least in my are S/SW Breathitt we had no storms. Rained for about 5 minutes and wind blew to 26 MPH at one time but thankfully nothing. Sure glad the sun did not come out today it was overcast all day which definitely kept the instability down.
We sure did get the rain here. 1.85 inches for Nashville so far today. We were getting pollen layers on car tops.
There were isolated flash flood and severe t-storm warnings for western KY/TN. Otherwise, not too bad.
raining hard here right now! We hit 80 deg today, had a little wind this eve but have had a lot worse!
Nice bout rain around 7 had rain for few hours. Not heavy heavy but steady rain inClay co . Glad wasn’t as severe as it was in ne ky towards morehead. Heard of damage that way. Not sure where but heard they was That part of state .
