Good Friday, everyone. Our weather is about to go from frosty to stormy as we head into the upcoming weekend. This takes place as the overall pattern takes on more of a blocky look as we head into early May. This may set the stage for some ugly conditions at a time of the year we don’t like seeing it here in horse country.
Thermometer readings will go from the low 30s this morning to the low and middle 60s for afternoon highs. That’s when an increase in clouds will be noted from west to east. Isolated showers and thunderstorms may develop across the western half of the state later tonight. Those will increase and spread across the rest of the state on Saturday.
The NAM Simulated Radar looks fairly amped up…
Locally heavy rainfall will be possible as the swatch of showers and storms moves through. Additional showers and storms will be possible on Sunday. While the weekend doesn’t look like a total washout… you should have a backup plan to any of those outdoor activities.
Temps early next week warm into the upper 70s to low 80s for a few days. That will be ahead of another strong cold front that moves in by the middle of the week. Showers and strong thunderstorms would be possible by that point.
I mentioned the fact that blocking is showing back up in the higher latitudes and that may lead to a huge cutoff area of low pressure around here in early May. Check out the GFS forecast at 500mb…
Many of the other medium range forecast models look similar to what you see there. If they are right… that could lead to some damp and cool weather that hangs around for days on end.
Make it a fantastic Friday and take care.
I guess I need to study which horses have a good mud pedigree for the Derby.
is this an all day rain scenario for Lexington on Sat? there will be tens of thousands of people at the horse park, me being one of them. I just want to make sure I have proper gear to stand in the rain all day.
I think yesterday was our last freeze of the year in Lawrenceburg. Yesterday it was 29; this morning 35.
Not looking encouraging for Oaks and Derby weather wise still early in the game.
The comment section has decreased, but I still check in. I know where to come to for my own personal weather forcast.. Thanks Chris
Beautiful KY photo. Looks like maybe I-64 around Frankfort?

I’ve stopped loving this rainy cool weather forecast today, RIP George Jones, one the country greats heads over the rainbow.
Cool and damp is good because it keeps severe weather at bay and drought from becoming a problem. Cloudy days, with highs in the 50’s and 60’s sound just right to me after several scorching summers in a row (2010, 2011, 2012).
I’ve seen this before, cool damp right up until almost June then, Bam, hot humid for 3 straight months!
Let’s hope not. Our average high in June is 83; July 87, and August 86. I would take those temps with lows in the 60’s (which is average) any day! It is days on end of 90’s with dewpoints in the 70’s that are hard to tolerae!
Try 108 last July in St. Louis. Worst summer day I ever had.
Thanks, Chris. Hadn’t had a chance to read the blog until now. Doesn’t sound too promising for the Derby, for sure. Maybe that will change between now and then, but you are right spot on, so it will probably be a muddy track.
As far as the cooler temps, if we could get some mid to upper 60s and low 70s with some sunshine, that would be ideal! Could you please put that order in for us? 😉 Thanks for all you do. Happy Friday, everyone!
Test. Posts aren’t going through.
Hmmm. Works on desktop, not on iPad.
