Good Monday, everyone. Kentucky Derby week is here and it’s all eyes on the bluegrass state. The biggest question of the week is… who will win the Derby? The second biggest question of the week is… how’s the Derby weekend weather looking? I can’t answer the first one, but can give you a little more insight on the second question.
Let’s start with where we are today.
Temps will head toward 70 in central and eastern Kentucky and into the 70s in the west. A scattered shower or thunderstorm will be possible.
Tuesday into Wednesday will see thermometers take off. Highs will soar to around 80 degrees under a partly sunny sky and just a small threat for a boomer.
Thursday will see some big changes working in from the west. The pattern continues to favor a big cut off low pressure developing across the region by late week into the weekend. As I’ve mentioned before… tracking exactly where that sets up will be crucial in determining just how ugly our weather can get. The latest GFS looks pretty darn nasty…
That setup would bring showers and thunderstorms through here later Thursday into Friday. Showers would then carry us into the weekend.
Now… take a look at the massive temperature plunge swinging in on Friday afternoon…
Again… exactly when and where that upper low decides to park itself will determine how ugly we get around here. That’s something we will be tracking and focusing on all week long.
Make it a wonderful Monday and take care.
well Derby weekend may be cold and rainy, but has any one. noticed that it always seems to get really warm after that? That is when I always say..well now the warm weather is here and get out the shorts and flip flops. Hope that holds true this spring.
Thanks, Chris. Looks like we are in for a nasty end to dogwood winter. Hopefully, this will be it for a while. Maybe the Detby can not be too wrt. Sure will ruin a lot of hats! ;). Have a great Monday, everyone.
Barring a really cold day tomorrow, Lexington is going to end up with above normal temps for April. Despite what anyone might say about this being a “cold pattern” the stats peak for themselves. I’ll post the official record for April on May 1.
Yes. Pretty much near normal to somewhat above normal temperatures for our region in general.
I suppose people were still mentally trying to shake the grasp of the very cold March we had.
But parts of the northern USA will have one of their coldest Aprils on record. For example, Fargo and Grand Rapids ND both set their all-time records for latest date in spring to hit 50 or higher (Marquette Michigan had their third latest date) and one of the old records went back to the 1890s. These places are only now starting to lose their tremendous snow pack – with possible flooding being one result.
I t could be an anomaly where I live, but I have not had the heat on this many times before and my heating bill that shows rolling temps for the bill periods also shows this colder than previous periods over the last few years.
I am beginning to wonder about the data….. Warming scientists modify THAT data too?? 😉 Grant money start drying up again so needed to fill their coffers again?? 😉 🙂
This is a day late, but I think the past few springs have been so warm, we felt this April was cold. For instance, as recently as 1997, April averaged 9 degrees colder than this year.
