Good Wednesday, folks. May is off and running and the weather picture is looking good… for now. Warmer than normal temps will continue for a few more days and then things take a turn toward the ugly. That turn looks to take place during Kentucky Derby weekend. That may not be the last of the ugly weather as we go forward.
Temps today will top out in the low 80s across much of the bluegrass state. There is just enough instability to fire up an isolated shower or thunderstorm, but most will see dry weather. A similar forecast will play out for Thursday… temps in the upper 70s and low 80s with a scattered storm possible.
The slow moving changes for the weekend start to impact our weather as early as Friday. A slow moving cutoff low pressure across the plains states will being a significant snowfall for areas normally getting hammered by tornadoes this time of year. That system meanders into the region later Friday into Saturday…
That setup MAY mean we get through Oaks Day with a lot of the rain just to our west. Derby day may see a lot of that stuff rolling in from the west and has a much better chance to be wet. Showers and cooler air would then continue into Sunday and Monday.
Again… timing, timing, timing.
That system will finally scoot out of here at some point early next week. That would leave us with warming temps, but the European Model continues to play up another big dump of cold air by the end of next week…
This is insane to see air masses like these showing up in MAY.
Have a great Wednesday and take care.
I guess so much for all the severe weather we were predicted to receive this spring. Unlimited Budget/Orb Oaks Derby Double.
Maybe the severe weather will happen later this year.
I’m sure also, since its still cool, the summer will probably be a little below average but very wet and severe, although that’s just my gut feeling.
At no point did you hear me talk about severe weather early in spring. As a matter of fact… just the opposite. I’ve talked about a late arriving severe weather season that lasts into summer.
WSAZ has a warm sunny weekend…and even in to next week… weather.com has warm, only WKYT and LEX have cool damp weather… Hoping you’re wrong… Really wanting a warm sunny weekend!
hummmmm….extremes, you say!!
Glad it’s a pretty day here in Richmond Virginia. Great weather for a birthday!!! Happy Birthday to me!!! 🙂
Great weather in Frankfort KY, sorry about the derby weather, but nothing we can do about it, lets hope the European model still thinks its march and is out to lunch??
So, what you are telling us is, that in December, we will likely be hitting temps of 80-85, the way this spring is going? 😉 Oh well, what can you say. You just go day to day, and deal with it as it comes. thanks, Chris, for all you do. Hopefully, one of these days, it will straighten up and be nice without having to have the cold spells in between every third nice day. Have a great Wednesday, everyone.
I agree with Coffeelady. 🙂
One extreme to the other, year to year KY weather flip flops more than politicians 😉
