Good Thursday, everybody. Our start to the month of May has been nothing short of spectacular with summertime air and plenty of sunshine. Unfortunately, this is NOT an indication of things to come as we have a whole lot of ugly working in for Derby weekend into early next week.
Temps today will top out in the upper 70s to low 80s. An isolated shower or thunderstorm will be a possibility… especially in the afternoon and evening.
The forecast for Kentucky Oaks Day at Churchill Downs still looks mainly dry… but it may be a close call. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will be possible with temps in the 70s. The farther east you go… the better the weather we will see through Saturday.
The nasty upper level low will slowly swing across the region over the weekend and that means rain will increase for Derby day…
Those showers will become widespread from west to east and hang around into Sunday as chilly air blows in. Temps for Derby day look to drop fairly quickly and it could be on the chilly side for the call to the post. Upper 40s to low 50s by then? That colder than normal air then engulfs the rest of the state into Sunday and Monday.
The models try to keep a damp pattern around for much of next week. Check out the 7 day rainfall forecast from the GFS…
Yep… that’s ugly. Make it a great Thursday and take care.
How’s this for a morning in May?

North West Wisconsin
It’s crazy crazy crazy.
Blooming Prairie, Minnesota (near the Iowa line) got 18 inches of snow. Some of the new all-time May records have not broken but obliterated old records. It says something when you get over a foot of snow when the only record was only two inches!
Tulsa had their first recorded May snowfall, their latest trace snow.
On the plus side, only three tornado fatalities in the USA so far this season with this more winter-like pattern. But Chris has mentioned that severe wx has perhaps merely been delayed for our area this season, so we need to be on guard (March, May and especially April are normally the most active months for larger twisters in Kentucky and Tennessee).
grrr, meant to say “when the old record was only two inches!
Definitely crazy, and sad that they got more snow in one day in May than we got all winter!
well at least the weather models/forcastewrs are the same as u all had not a clue bout this WEEKWEND. first damp/cold then just Tuesday 70s low stays west maybe pop up shower. now back to 50s damp etc.lol
FLIP A COIN or I think no forcast should be givin no futher than 2 days out. tryting say what it will do from 3 to 7 days is usless.
Agree, big time flopping back and forth the last couple days, I think the models are over doing the cold air in our area, it is May the sun will when out this time of year even with clouds!
Tell us then, Rolo, how to be great forecasters. It seems like you know everything.
Thanks, Chris. Do you see any indication of some more spring like weather coming up any time soon? I am so over this cool wet stuff all at once. We need some warm and dry weather that does not go away after two or three days…..just sayin’. oh well, sooner or later the weather will turn nice…thanks for all you do, Chris!.
Louisville mets holding temps in the 60s for Saturday, Chris has it turning much cooler than that, I guess will see who wins the race and the temperature race?
