Good Friday and Happy Kentucky Oaks Day. This is the time of year we get the eyes of the world focused on the bluegrass state. We want to be able to showcase our fine state with some nice weather for the Oaks and Derby. Would you settle for one outta two? Rain looks to move in as we roll closer to the run for the roses.
The big upper level low continues to spin just to our west today. This will bring some widely scattered showers and thunderstorms into central and eastern Kentucky with a little more pronounced action across the west.
While I can’t rule out a storm popping up around Churchill Downs… much of the day looks to be on the dry side. Temps today will be back into the 70s for afternoon highs. Here’s what you need to track the Oaks Day weather…

Downtown Louisville @ 2nd & Broadway

I-64 @ I-264

I-264 @ Freedom Way
Near Louisville International Airport
A wall of rain will slowly work from west to east on Derby Day and is likely to impact Churchill Downs later in the morning or by early afternoon. Here’s how the day looks to me…
The farther east and northeast you are… the better your Saturday will be. Temps will hit the 60s in these areas and will drop into the upper 40s to low 50s for areas getting in on the heaviest rain.
The rain will then spread eastward Saturday night into Sunday and may be heavy at times. Parts of central, southern and western sections of the state may end up with 1″-3″ of rain through Monday.
Have a great Oaks Day and take care.

¡Caramba! ¡Tiempo loco para Mayo!
Light snow falling early this morning in many places to our west (and northwest). Snowing now in Fayetteville Arkansas and Springfield Missouri.
About two inches of snow on the ground in Siloam Springs Arkansas.
According to NWS Little Rock, the state of Arkansas had never officially recorded snow during the month of May – not even a trace.
Until a few hours ago that is.
Proof that the world is not warming as fast as some folks believe!
Well, the snow can stay to the west, please. Would like it better if the rain would not be so abundant either. We need to save some o fit for later in the summer. While we are getting too much now, I am afraid we might be not getting some later when we need it. So, maybe there IS such a thing as too much of a good thing…at least we are in the part of the state that rain gets too a bit later. Still, a nice weekend would have been nice. Thank you, Chris. Appreciate all you do. Looks like Derby hats will get wet indeed. Could make for some interesting pictures………have a great Friday, everyone.
Another WELL ABOVE normal day here in Lexington. 8 degrees above normal for today and yesterday. Record highs being set in the Northeast and in Michigan, also in California, Arizona, and Oregon. Yes, this is record cold for the middle of the U.S. but for here it is “ho hum.” Odds are 3/1 that May will end up with above normal temps just like April did.
I hope your right, warmth sounds good, and good for tomatoes!
All time records for May in Lexington, KY:
