Good Friday and welcome to a day of tracking storms across the bluegrass state. Our flow is right off the western Gulf of Mexico and this is leading to an increase in juice for atmosphere to produce heavy rain producing storms. That trend kicks in today and ramps up even more over the next few days.
The highest threat for showers and storms today will be across central and western Kentucky. Some of these storms may become severe with damaging wind and large hail possible. Given the available moisture… torrential rain will be likely.
Let’s track the storms…
The threat for strong and severe storms will be with us again on Saturday and Sunday as a cold front works through here. Rounds of boomers will be possible and the potential is there for some hefty rain totals as we begin the month of June.
Much cooler air sweeps in for Monday and Tuesday with highs in the low and mid 70s. This looks like a good few days of weather before more humidity and storms move in for the second half of next week.
Have a great Friday and take care.
Been loving the weather of late, Mr. Bailey! Thanks for all you do. Looks like the rain may be just what we need to wash away some of the pollen that is lurking around. Low to mid 70s sounds pretty nice, as well. I will take it1 The warm evenings have made for a good opportunity to sit on the back deck after dark and watch planes, and just listen to the sounds of nature all around. Been a very relaxing way to end the workday. Hope the rain doesn’t hinder that this evening. (Don’t have to work tomorrow, so I can stay up later and enjoy it!) 😉
Also saw where Jim Caldwell is joining the KYT staff! Excited to have him become a part of the First Alert Team! Happy Friday, everyone, and thanks for all you do, Chris!
Hope we get some rain, getting a little dry in east Frankfort, the garden tomatoe plants need it!
I know this is weather for Kentucky, but right now it is looking real bad for people in Oklahoma! The SPC is considering upgrading portions of Oklahoma including the Oklahoma city and Moore in a HIGH RISK, when they issue that then that means strong, violent tornadoes are possible!
Bless their hearts out there!!! We all need to stand in prayer against this thing!
In their latest update, looks like SPC has stayed with a moderate risk. Still, SPC has parts of the central plains within the ‘hatched’ area on their tornado probabilistic map meaning a higher chance of stronger twisters. Moore OK is near the southeast border of this hatched area so with any luck the worst will stay to the northwest of Moore.
There’s an even higher chance of very large destructive hail in the plains. Better get your car in the garage 😉
As Chris touched on, this mess is headed our way. It may not be too surprising if SPC issues a moderate risk for tomorrow covering parts of western Kentucky.
Severe weather watch could be issued shortly for our area! SPC giving a 40% for a possible watch! SLIGHT RISK Area maybe upgraded for our area as well!
Rain all around Frankfort but nothing seems to hold together over Frankfort, come rain quit teasing us!
BIG rain in northwest Lex.
QUESTION:
Can someone tell me what site has the BEST radar satellite maps. I’m talking about the ability to see national/ regional radar past 24 hours, satellite loops both regional/national past 24 hours.
Thanks
I’ve always wanted that but have never found a GOOD one. Only still pictures and its complicated to use.
May will go down in Lexington as about 2 degrees above normal in temperatures and right around normal in precipitation. June looks to start out around normal for the first eight days or so. Normal high/low for June 1 is 79/59. That’s right–normal high is still shy of 80. That “cool snap” with highs in the Mid 70’s and lows in the Mid 50’s is closer to normal that we have seen the past few days. As recently as 2009, we had a day in June with a high in the 50’s.
Test
Wow, I tried to post a comment 3 times hut it didn’t ho up and my test goes up…

So apparently Mike Bettes crew just took a direct hit! This is unbelievable.. I wonder if he will get in big trouble for that? He said it was his decision to keep driving and they drove right into it!
Really sad to see what is going on in Oklahoma. 1,000 people evacuated at the OKC airport into a tunnel. Even for tornado alley it is very unusual to see a major metro area hit twice in a week.
I think after last week the MEDIA going OVERBOARD TONITE. yuea its bad but not what happen last week.
to be calling this HISTORIC etc by SHEP SMITH and A COOOPER is a disgrace to the people of W LIBERTY KY who go NO COVERAGE when they was hit. only problem I see tonite was DUMMYS driving on roadways. but in end nothing like we saw lst week. the CABLE CHANNELS make me sick, one trying to out do the other while lives are at stake.
Rolo, while West Liberty was a big deal, it didn’t affect a population near the size of Moore, or OKC. That is why it received no coverage. That is how the media works! Lol
Despite the relative geographic isolation of West Liberty, a crew from the Weather Channel did live reports from West Liberty after the tornado. Looking on YouTube, so did CNN (click link here), Fox News and CBS News if not others.
True, if areas much closer to Louisville and Lexington had been hit, there could have been a lot more post-tornado coverage. Still, it’s stretching things to say eastern KY got no coverage.
I personally recall CNN broadcasting a tornado emergency for Salyersville KY and showing that infamous radar hook echo just west of Chris Bailey’s hometown.
Guess I messed up the html with the CNN (via YouTube) link. Here’s the full URL address:

My husband has been volunteering in Moore for the past week. They just came out of the shelter they were in. The church is still standing.
(In reference to the comment made to CB’s twitter account)
CB, I’m not sure how an adult who lists their location as “LOLVille” can expect to be taken seriously by anyone. The “actively searching for work…” tidbit in his profile, well I suppose that PBR isn’t going to buy itself.
I don’t see how we can get very unstable tomorrow as the loads of clouds from storms west of here are sure to be over our area all day tomorrow. At least I HOPE so!
