Good evening, gang. As I celebrate the final day of my extended weekend, we watch the first clipper begin to push into the state. The NWS in Jackson has issued A Winter Weather Advisory for southeastern parts of the state late tonight into Wednesday.
Here’s a look…
I don’t anticipate a lot of accumulation from this… even in the mountains. It COULD be enough to cause a few slick spots into Wednesday morning.
Speaking of snow… FOR FUN, check out the European Ensembles 2 week snowfall forecast…
I’m ONLY showing that to illustrate the point that I do think this is a pattern that can deliver many snow threats to Kentucky and surrounding areas.
In the meantime… let’s track the return to winter blowing in this evening…

Current temperatures

Enjoy the evening and take care.
thanks Chris. take a break and watch the cats tonight.
hey now, that’s some cool eye candy!
thanks Chris!
and yes – GO CATS!!!
For anybody north and east of Lex all others not so much 🙁
Looks pretty good along the I-64 corridor! I approve! 🙂
Umm, you do see that all if not most of KY is in the 4″+ zone
And you understand this is a running total for 2 weeks which includes what falls tonite and this weekend
Andy I don’t know where you live but that would be more than most have had all season. Ill take it.
I will take it to but is not much for anybody in the SE
Thanks, Chris! NWS says that my county can expect to see up to an inch in the valleys… not much, but it’s something.
I notice that Wise County, Virginia is under a winter storm warning. They’ve had several of those in the last few weeks. Most of their neighboring counties are under an advisory, just as we are. Is it because they’re at a higher elevation? Just curious.
A lot of Wise County’s populated areas are above 2,500 feet, especially in the central and northern part of the county. Also, High Knob which is in Wise County is a little more than 4,000 feet in elevation. They usually do get quite a bit more snow than the surrounding area, especially in upslope events.
Chris, do you have any thoughts on when an extended dry warm up period might occur (more than a couple of days)? Mid February possibly? My hopes of a “real snow” are all but completely gone, so I am now in “hurry up Spring mode”. The nuisance that is “the ankle biter” or “duck duster” doesn’t do anything for me in the least. I’ll opt for warmth any day over the “nuisance”.
Ummmmm … We still have 2 months of wintery possibilities. It’s not spring yet. So says Dodger!
Yes, but mid to late Feb. usually does bring a few days in a row of nice weather. I no Spring is no where near, just craving a dry warm spell. Today and last Sunday’s beautiful weather has spoiled me.
I know, that is….
ankle biters per day will add up to a foot one day
sorry that comment was ment for Troy
Temp down to 38 in Frankfort with steady rain and strong winds, cold air might catch the back end of this in east central KY for atleast a mix soon?
Looks like NWS Jackson is backing off on almost all snowfall except on the mountain tops, while the NWS Morristown is holding steady with predicting 1-2″ snowfalls for most of their coverage area.
Actually, Morristown NWS has just backed off on the forecast as well.
Not a lot, if any. And definitely not as much as Jackson did.
Not as big a back step as Jackson but they had Harrogate for 1-2 inches of accumulation tomorrow a couple hours ago but dropped that to less than an inch in the last half hour.
Wouldn’t it be cool if we could go back and look at all snows that amounted to something in this area, say the past 40 years or so, and see if the forecasts verified or busted…..we know the 94 and 98 storms were busted forecasts…….I wonder how many more there were with big snows in this area through the years
Great question. The most recent “bust” I had on the high end was a clipper in March of 2012. After a very mild and mostly snowless winter, I had 5 inches of snow in Lawrenceburg. I think BG airport had 5.5? This came two days after that horrible tornado outbreak. I think the forecast was for 1-3 inches of snow. So 5+ was a surprise!
We got 6 inches from that storm in Shelbyville. I wasn’t expecting much at all and woke up to half a foot of snow on the ground.
It DOES happen. My favorite snows of the past are all major over-achievers. Dodger!
On an “non-weather” note this UK game reminds me of some of those great Arkansas/UK battles when Arkansas first joined the SEC.
Sorry about the final CB. I can feel you seething way over here in Versailles.
I am a Louisville fan so I enjoy any loss by UK but, those refs were terrible.
