Good Thursday, folks. We have a series of clippers dropping into the state over the next several days. These will bring rounds of light snow our way and we are likely to see some accumulations from these. The overall pattern continues to head toward one that will feature a harsh period of winter for much of the country.
The first round of light snow arrives this afternoon and evening across and is being pushed by a lot of upper level energy. This upper level energy continues to swing through here into Friday and it’s looking quite stout…
That upper level support is likely to fire off some pretty intense bands of snow later tonight into Friday. Light accumulations are a pretty good bet and slick spots may develop on area roads. Winds are going to be super gusty during this time.
The next system swing in by Saturday evening and is being pushed by another strong lobe of upper level energy…
That is likely to bring another round of light snow our way into Saturday night. Again… accumulations will generally be light with an inch or two possible over the course of the next 3 days.
After a short-lived spell of nice weather later Sunday into Monday… an even deeper system drops into the region on Tuesday. This trough is going to try to bring another round of snow our way and may even crank up a storm along the east coast.
The GFS is really jumping on the cold air behind it…
That is likely the tip of the iceberg… pun intended. This pattern will grow even colder and snowier for the final week of January into February.
Let’s get back to the light snow moving in today. I have you set to do some tracking…
Here are some tracking toolsβ¦

Trivia Question???? What happen 20 years ago today? Need I say more?
Nothing, most of the snow fell overnight so tomorrow would be the anniversary. Tomorrow is also 20 years since the Northridge Earthquake. I remember waking up and seeing the special report for the quake and then the local news interrupting the special report for a special report on all the snow.
I was born and raised in southern california. so I lived through the earthquake. It was so unreal.
No, prelude, understood. In St. Matthews it didn’t really crank up until after midnight. I went out at 530 AM (this was a Monday) to shovel the driveway because I really wanted to get to work. After I got it good enough I backed out into the street and promptly got stuck. Knowing that the Plow of St. Matthews would soon be coming, I shoveled the street as quickly as possible so I could get back into the driveway. The plow didn’t make it to our street until Thursday!
Precip in southern Illinois looks rather juicy. Hope it stays together on its way southeast!
Joey we must be on the the same schedule……ha ha….Hopefully this all falls as snow and not verga. Will have a good three hour snow globe effect?
This is not a negative post; just an observation. Today is January 16th and we have not had a significant snow in Harrison since before Christmas. Really hope winter cranks up the production of white stuff.
Depends on what you call significant IMO my area hasn’t had a significant snow in a few yrs
Per the NWS LMK update this morning, the radar is more menacing than reality because the lower level is taking a long time to saturate. This is my interpretation of their words so excuse the over simplicity. Verga…the nemesis of snow lovers. Or at least one of the nemesis (or nemesi?).
Yea – not only that – but the temp is forecast from NWS to be 38 today….that’s pretty warm. But moderate to heavy snow showers tonight…I’m guessing that’s separate from what we’re seeing on radar now……..
Snoluvr,
Thats what I was thinking. There is no snow falling in any of the street cams that CB posted where the radar says it should be snowing. Seemed odd.
I just walked outside here in Louisville, the air is really dry.
need me some humidity. the radar is not telling the truth.
Pardon the “duh” moment here, but we just need something to buck this current pattern. I don’t mind going warmer for a bit if it involves a “one step back, two steps forward” transition into an environment for condusive to major winter storms. Just frustrating to hear local mets say, “Get used to no accumulation…except for Cumberland plateau.” Don’t want to sound too whiny though. π Thanks for all you do, CB!
*more condusive
So tired of seeing a wet ground that has been froze solid each night only for it to warm up and rain then a couple flurries.im thinkin about moving from knox county to harlan county to the top of the mountain.not tryin to be negative.thanks for the updates chris.
Thanks Chris, and morning fellow weather lovers. (or haters) π It is looking like we may at least get to see some snow falling. I am kind of like Chris on this winter. I just feel like we are in for a good snow at some point, likely when we least expect it. We have the cold temps, now if we can just get the juice to go with it!
Have a great Thursday, everyone!
Radar is looking great….even though some it may not be reaching the ground, darker blue shades are showing up as it moves east. Maybe the interaction with the daytime “heating” will create instability enough to get it going for us in the east. Here’s to hoping π
Hopefully when the “Clipper Train” is over we get something bigger towards the end of Jan..Trough shift’s farther east so that should do away with clipper mania..Going forward after all these clipper’s sure looks promising..
dry,dry everwhere its dry, trying to find some saturated times, but there aint no dew point that can riseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
I guess I will follow like everyone else states “this isn’t meant to be negative” …but Gosh, I really wish it would snow in CKY! I don’t mean snow flurry, or shower or accumulations will generally be light with an inch or two possible over the course of the NEXT 3DAYS, I wish it would Really SNOW!!!!
I just don’t see it happening, that’s not to say I know what the weather will do, its just saying I haven’t really seen it snow this year (at the most maybe 1 inch at a time here in Richmond)!!!
Last years snow total of 13 inches looks safe at this point in Frankfort, so far holding around 3 inches for the year and most of that in December!
Hope the snow gods WAKEUP soon?
Their awake and their still ticked.
Well if you’ve noticed we don’t have an active southern jet this year..California is in extreme drought the sierra mnts. Only 15% of normal snow this winter…we need a good southern jet to hook up with the polar vortex …oh well ….I guess y’all get used to the clipper mania…my area don’t even catch that..lol..so I guess I’ll dream about the lawn mower and spring…lol
WSAZ and Accuweather both calling for less than an inch to dusting tonight into tomorrow. tick-tock– the snow train is leaving the station in KY I’m afraid.
Southeast Kentucky won’t get a dusting. Precip shield can’t get far enough south and it dries up before it hits SE Ky.
Snow looks to be falling in Louisville by the looks of the webcam
It is snowing in Louisville
Looking at Radar as the snow moves toward Frankfort and Central KY the dome effect looks to be showing up! SURPRIZE!
I know I’m being negative π
You sound like a broken record.. Isn’t that what you told me once…haha
This pattern is good for cold lovers…snow lovers– not so much. We need the sub-tropical jet to manifest itself and bring a feed of moisture into the country(not to mention California needs rain). However, it looks like a weak La Nina is trying to appear, and thatβs not too conducive for a strong sub-tropical jet to develop. Right now the northern (Polar) jet is dominant, and with it coming southbound straight out of Canada, moisture starved clippers are all we have in the offing. Hopefully, something will change the pattern a bit as we head toward the end of the month.
The “local” news here in Manchester is giving “light” accumulations tonight. By the looks of the radar, there isn’t going to be anything left to cover the ground tonight-morning. Am I missing something. Is there moisture that’s going to move in later or something? Anyone?
From the traffic cams posted here, it looks like the snow dome over Louisville finally has a crack in it. π
