Good Wednesday, folks. After a chilly start to the day, much warmer air is set to return to the bluegrass state over the next few days. This warm air will bring will bring a few storms back into the picture, but that pales in comparison to what may be ahead of us. Things look very active as we get set to close out April and the pattern could turn very ugly.
Highs today will reach the low to mid 60s under mainly sunny skies.
The 70s for highs will shoot back in here for Thursday on a gusty southwesterly wind. This is ahead of a front that brings a round of showers and storms across the state Thursday night and Friday morning…
That action will push through here quickly with afternoon sunshine taking over. This nice weather will then carry us into Saturday as temps come down a little. Highs from 65-70 look good at the moment.
Rounds of showers and storms begin to impact the state on Sunday as a front stalls out. These rounds of showers and thunderstorms look to continue into the first half of next week. This could mean we run the risk of strong storms and heavy rainfall. Some of the models are showing several inches of rain…
For the past several days, I’ve been talking about the potential for ugly weather setting up at some point next week. This “ugly” would be chilly temps and damp weather from a slow-moving cutoff upper level low. The models are all over this…
That would make for some flat out nasty weather as we head toward Kentucky Derby weekend. Let’s hope this doesn’t work out, but the setup certainly doesn’t look good.
Have a great day and take care.
May 1st – 49 degrees and damp.
That’s not anybody’s forecast, just my gut.
If an “ugly” pattern like that sets in next week I sure hope it clears out to some degree by Thursday!!
Looking for NOAA radio suggestions…. Hey all- long time reader, although I don’t comment as much as I used to. With the spring storm season approaching, and Chris’s hint at what is to come, I thought it a timely to ask for suggestions on a good NOAA radio.
I am shopping for friends/family members who need them. I currently have the First Alert WX-150, and it has been a good radio, no complaints. However, it has been discontinued. Previously, I and others I know had the Midland WR-100. My experience with it was subpar- inconsistent reception and stopped working at all way too soon. Others I know had similar experiences. Although it has been discontinued, this leaves me a little leery of Midland…. So, I’m turning here because if anyone knows, I figured this group will! 🙂
JavaJoe, I have the Midland WX 100 and have had it for nearly 10 years. Only issue I have had with it is I can’t seem to get the time to set properly. Other than that, the radio has been very dependable, and works well. It may be the area I am in as opposed to where you are, but I have found it to be
a very dependable unit. Our Kroger has them cheaper than anyone in town. (Even the W store.) Hope that helps
Midland 120B is very good. There is also a Midland 120C which comes in a plastic clamshell case. The chipset and radio have undergone improvements for reception of broadcasts and the SAME tones. Amazon has better price than what you would find locally, unless Kroger puts them up for $29.99 with a plus card.
Thank you for the suggestions.
Tornado outbreak on this date in 1968, including an F4 (nearly an F5 ) at Falmouth KY [click this link].
Hopefully the storms early next week won’t be too tornadic by the time they get here. But we are getting a bit dry, even if we of course don’t want too much rain at once.
The Falmouth F4 tornado wiped out my Dad’s house in extreme Northwestern Mason County, near the town of Dover. Nobody was home at the time. He in the process of building a house closer to Maysville at the time anyway.
Thanks Chris. What a beautiful day! A little cooler than I like, but I will take it! I guess my neighbors all thought I was crazy last night, as we were out at 10 covering our azaleas, but with the chance of frost, we did not want to take any chances. It only got down to 46 here, so there was no need, but if we hadn’t, it would have been frosty (that is the way our luck runs, 😉 ) Going to enjoy today and tomorrow before we see rain, and then going to enjoy that too as we could use a bit. But I am thinking not as much as what it looks like may be coming…..Have a GREAT Wednesday everyone and thanks again Chris, for the update and for all you do!
How chilly are we talking? Like potential frost/freeze-caliber chilly?
