Good Thursday, everyone. Bitterly cold air has engulfed much of the country and that includes the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This arctic air is in place as we start a weekend that will feature some wild temperature swings and everything from thunder to some ice and snow.
Temps today are frigid to say the least. Single digits will be noted for some in the north as the day begins. Wind chills can drop to zero or below. Upper teens to low 20s will be noted for highs, but the winds will make it feel much colder. This is impressive given how early in winter that it is and the fact we have NO snow on the ground. Can you image how cold it would get if we did?
Friday is another frigid day with 10-15 in the morning as clouds quickly increase. Temps will slowly rise all day long from west to east. The actual high temps for the day should come at 11:59pm.
Precipitation moves in during the afternoon and evening and could start out in the form of a wintry mix, especially in the north. With a frozen ground, we will need to be on guard for some icy spots developing, even with temps just above freezing.
Rain takes over Friday night into Saturday as temps surge toward 60. High winds and thunderstorms will be possible into the afternoon and evening. That’s when the arctic front slams in here with a major drop in temps and a switch to a period of sleet, freezing rain and some snow…
This switch is just inside the timeframe of the NAM…
The temperature drop from Saturday evening to daybreak Sunday is awesome to see…
With that dramatic of a drop, all that water will freeze up and create some slick travel. Throw some quick hitting light accumulations of sleet, freezing rain and snow on there, and you can get some messy roads.
Arctic air continues to come back in behind this later Sunday into Monday. Look at that snowpack doing some serious work just to our north…
I will shoot you guys a few updates later today. Stay warm and take care.
Well at least the majority of the rain will be warm.
I hope I’ll have time to remove the leaves in my front yard before the rain begins on Friday.
I have four leaf jobs to do today and tomorrow. I am usually finished with them by Thanksgiving. They hung on longer than normal this fall, except for the oaks, they always are the last to fall. Just shows how crazy the weather has been this season. I am with you and hope to get them done before they get wet and frozen.
Ugh! This cold and then rain! Typical waste of cold and looks like more cold rain next Thurs. Did I say ugh?
If anyone needs me, I’ll be unplugging for the weekend.
Little snow is better than big ice 🙂
So the GFS had the placement of the storm correct two weeks out, just didn’t have the warm air surge to go with it. Kentucky is the worst state for winter weather lovers. Glad we still have three months of this to go (sigh), but hopefully we get ours later in January and February. Thanks for the update CB.
Cold rain. Story of our great state.
60 degree rain might be considered warm. That’s what’s do crazy about this pattern.
Wouldn’t it be great if our first significant snowfall was on Christmas Eve? One can dream.
Remember guys: As bad as it is in KY for significant winter storm occurence, it is worse south of here.
I will say though…I think we get teased more than the southern states as they rarely get as much model flopping for significant winter threats as this area does!
New model runs backing off on precip/secondary low idea. On to “next week” sigh. Rodger in Dodger
What did you expect. Cold And sunny, warm and rainy, cold and sunny. Kentucky winters are the best.
This
Looks like these cold snaps are going to be very short. The current one will be gone by tomorrow and the one on Sunday predicted to be gone by Tuesday. We a another 53 degree day predicted here in WV by next Tuesday.
Some folks seem to forget a lot of the state got three epic snows in less than a year. Record breaking in some cases and certainly the biggest in seventeen years.
Point is it can happen, but CB called it out in his outlooks for the last two winters- not this winter. Apparently not the same ingredients in place this winter for big snow here- ice on the other hand….). Probably more like the previous years before the three big snows. Clippers or bust!
Bubba rule : 33 degrees up, mosture
32 degrees and below – no mosture
We done got our Bubba buster last year and year before. Now on to bad i-word. Thats the dreaded event this year
