Good Sunday, everyone. We have now moved into the next phase of our self-proclaimed ” wild weekend of weather”. Old man winter has taken control of things, giving us a mixed bag of precipitation, leading to some slick roads across Kentucky.
The day starts with the cold taking hold as temps drop into the 20s for the entire state. That cold air will do a couple of things. First, it will likely cause all that standing water to instantly freeze up. It’s also leading to a period of sleet, snow and freezing rain rolling eastward. Those two in tandem will lead to slick travel across the region.
Your tracking toys in a bit, but let’s talk quickly about the week ahead.
I am focusing on two potential systems with the first arriving Thursday. This looks fairly weak at the moment, but it can bring some rain to light snow with it…
Flakes flying a few days before Christmas? I don’t know too many people that would complain if it happened. But, what about Christmas itself? We have a chance.
The GFS Parallel continues to show a stronger system with rain to snow on Christmas Eve and Day…
That’s certainly something of interest. I think it comes down to whether or not this low cuts off to our south or not. If it does, then it would have a lesser chance of brining winter weather with it. If it comes out as a full blown storm system, it would have a much better chance of making some dreams come true.
I leave you with your full blown tracking toys…

I will have updates later today. Make it a great Sunday and take care.
Just finished my shift at Louisville Standiford Field, absolutely no frozen precipitation as of 4:00 a.m. Gene Snyder Freeway drying out, no icy issues, again as of 4:00. A lot of rain fell…my rain gauge at home in Valley Station registered over 2.6″. A little bit of drizzle after the steady rain, then it stopped and then temperatures went below freezing.
Just looked at Mesonet, at 4:40, temperature spread includes 68 at Whitesburg in Letcher county and 21 near Marion in Crittenden county.
Pouring sleet here in Lexington as of 6:15 am. Surfaces are lightly covered in ice.
I got notta zip zelch just dry (lots of rain) no real frozen precipitation.
Got some light accumulation of sleet and snow on the ground here in Pulaski. Went out the door at about 6 to go hunt as it was starting to change over from rain to sleet. Talk about a quick ice up!
Nothing much in southern Laurel County just yet other than rain to a brief period of sleet, but the snow is on its way as it’s coming from Pulaski county. Our roads in Laurel will be covered before we know it
Some sleet in Rodger’s backyard this morning but nothing of consequence and a typical backside event letdown. NOW, if that parallel GFS doesn’t move, Rodger will have a very white Christmas. Of course, it will move 15 times this week and probably end up north of us – again. Rodger in Dodger
Got maybe two flakes per hour in the Metro near Iroquois Park.
Overachiever!
Another waisted opportunity.
A hard frozen ground without white icing.
Just started sleeting here
Nothing of consequence this week looks tranquil and seasonal, zonal pattern.
Don’t fall for any talk of a Christmas snow you will only be disappointed
Have some faith man where is ur Christmas spirit.
LOL
But that’s the carrot
How much does a snow blower rental cost?
That might be a wasted expense this winter. Snow bowers are handy for snows beyond several inches π
I have lived in Kentucky all my life and have never owned one nor do I expect to buy one…heck, I bought a deluxe snow shovel several years ago and have only used it ‘s few times, mostly within the past few winters!
I think he meant a snow making machine and not something that moves snow.
NAM, I really believed in you and you let me down. π
NAM it! π
I don’t know what version CB used, but the NAM 3km Parallel at 24-36 hours out, two runs (12z and 0z), showed more sleet than anything else for much of central Kentucky, and the trend between the two was declining. No accumulating snowfall except toward the northern part of the state and very minimal freezing rain and freezing drizzle. From my perspective, NAM did well. Just depends on what cookie you get from the cookie jar I guess.
I wasn’t expecting that much rain honestly – over 2 inches. I see a little sleet on the roof, but quite frankly, I’m not disappointed because this was not really supposed to be anything major and sleet is boring anyway. At least with ice storms you get beauty – even if everything else about it is a nightmare – but with sleet, you don’t even get that.
Sleet is fun reminds me of Dipping Dots ice cream
As expected, the wind has dried most of the main stuff off the roads and sidewalks, but surprised the puddles are still puddles with the current temps. I guess not cold enough to freeze with the wind and precip. Too much movement.
We had a dusting of snow in Lexington this AM. We were out back at the fire pit last night. It was so warm we didn’t need the fire. Crazy weather.
I’ll take the snow dreams for Christmas!
Thanks Chris and fellow posters.
This December is turning out like the last few Decembers. Two day cold shots followed by big warm-ups and rain. Only positive so far is it is not as far above normal as the last three months.
That’s Fencetucky π We had the fence shift three times in the past two winters. Catch is CB called those chance early on. Seems this winter might be back to before the shifts. Then again, we did have three real big trend busters π
You nailed that one. Might have to wait for a couple late January clippers to get any real shot at a decent snow. These rain to snow events never pan out and when they do it is always the other side of the fence that gets snow.
Seems like for about the past 5 years, the northwest flow snow showers/squalls. Have been really weak, non events. Not even worthy of mentinning.
The 06z run of the GFS that Chris shows in the post for a Christmas snow has now completely flipped in the 12z run…all rain now as we would expect.
Another 2 + inch rainfall event here in SE KY…expecting next week’s drought monitor to have at least this part of the state and the west part to be drought free….still think a 10 inch monthly total is possible some where regionally before all is said and done…going on 6 inches here for the month already!
So it didn’t snow. Worse things have happened in life.
Yes, a new Ghostbusters movies with the same cast as thr last one could be announced…. π π
We gonna make it a franchchiiiiise!
Had sleet/snow flurries through the morning here in east LOU. Was pretty out, but bitter cold with windchill. Strange weather, weird ‘warmth’ yesterday and pouring rain last night. Even had some late night thunder sleet. Roads have been dry, but our deck and the steps have been a sheet of ice. The puppy has not been pleased. LOL
I know – there was a LOT of thunder and wind and heavy rain last night – like the middle of a summer storm in mid Dec. We actually needed every bit of that rain too.
Yea, our dog did not care about doing her “business” on the iced over g*r*a*s*s/leaves this morning π π
Nashville had isolated flooding, then after midnight experienced a couple hours of light freezing rain with a bit of sleet and snow thrown in. Car windshields had a rather thick glaze of ice by this morning. Salt trucks were working on the icy bridges but otherwise roads weren’t too bad.
Wednesday is the first day of winter maybe Christmas day snow will come to a fruit. Lol
Yawn…..as we move to January, maybe we get some snow action.
Not so much as a flake in my neighborhood the cold has even been much weaker than expected. It is still above freezing. Which tells me it’s probably gonna get warmer than predicted this week.
Not seeing any chances for snow myself…looking close to 55 + possible in SE KY LATER this week with snow as more of wishful thinking.
