Good afternoon, everyone. Mild winds are blowing out there today, with areas of western Kentucky possibility flirting with record highs. As this air continues for another day or so, we focus on a MAJOR pattern change coming next week. Winter is coming.
I don’t have a ton of time, so let’s get right into it. The Ensembles continue to show massive blocking, allowing for a huge trough to engulf much of the country. I’ve shown you these for the past week, now.
Just look at all the frigid air taking control of the pattern…
The GFS is similar to last night’s European Model with the transition starting next Tuesday, with a big storm system unleashing the cold…
Like the European. the GFS follows that up with a snow system diving in from the northwest by the end of next week…
Man, that’s absolutely frigid!
Notice how the upper air setup on the GFS looks exactly what we have been showing you from the Ensembles…
That’s a setup that often found in a lot of our great winter periods. I’m not saying this will become one of them, but the pattern has the look.
I will have another update this evening and will be back on WKYT starting at 4pm. Enjoy your day and take care.
Thanks CB! Whatever the case, looks chilly dilly later next week.
Thanks Chris for keeping us updated. Those models are impressive, we will see what happens at the end of next week.
I know you had talked some a while back about the 1977 and 78 winters starting in January instead of December. I wasn’t alive during that decade but would to see a winter like that, whether it starts in December or later!
Terry, I was a teenager at the time. It was a brutal cold period and stay cold for a long period of time. As matter fact the Ohio river froze over solid and it’s the only time it has frozen over in my lifetime , plus we a had lot of snow in that time frame. We miss 30 days straight of school because of snow that didn’t melt until late Feb or March.
I was born in the 80s but mostly remember the late 80s and 90s ongoing. 2014 and 2015 were the first two winters that truly reminded me of those good 1990 winters we had, especially 1995 -1996 season:) people have told me that those late 70s winters were much worse than the 1990s.. would love to see it!
Terry : You are very young and will likely see a winter like we had in 1977-78. Maybe this winter ?
Thanks for the emphasis on GREAT! Should be a BRRRR! Appreciate you so much!
Time to stop stalling and start stacking the wood at the patio door! I think as long as I am toting and stacking I will do a double load because it looks like I will be using it–soon! And I should add marshmallows and s’more making stuff and hot dogs to roast on the grocery list…might as well be warm and well fed. (I taught in the winters of ’77, ’78, ’79 and it was WINTER!!)
It started snowing around the 6th of January in 1978 and it didn’t completely melt off until March 13. That was my senior year at Huntington East High School and we missed a ton of school.
