Happy New Year, everyone. It’s a bitterly cold day, with a light snow blanketing the ground in many areas. Those northwesterly flow snow showers we talked about, certainly did the trick. As temps continue to run bitterly cold, this pattern is threatening to lock in for the long haul.
I have no changes in the temperature department tonight or through the rest of the week. Vanceburg hit -4 this morning and areas of northern Kentucky can approach -10 in a few spots tonight. The rest of the state ranges from -5 to +5. Wind chills go from -5 to -15 at times.
Wednesday is the “warmest” day of the week with temps only upper single digits and low teens to start. Highs range from the low 20s north to near 30 south. This is ahead of a strong upper level trough digging in here, helping develop a winter storm across the southeast coast…
That storm becomes a monster and rides the east coast, pulling down another bitterly cold at mass into our region. Northwesterly winds will then bring snow showers and squalls for Wednesday night into Thursday. Just like with this past weekend’s snows, I’m riding the Canadian…
The American models like the GFS and NAM just cannot figure out these systems on a northwesterly flow. The same run of the Canadian Model puts some snow down all the way into Tennessee…
With such bitterly cold air in place, we would be looking at a much higher ratio than what is shown above.
A disturbance behind that will then dive in here, potentially bringing a swath of light snow by Friday.
Temps from Thursday through the weekend can be similar to what we are seeing out there early this week. Wind chills may be even colder.
The models continue to trend colder with the setup from late weekend into early next week, with another brutal shot of air coming in. I expect these runs to keep sinking south with the precipitation lines…
I will have another update later today, so check back. Happy New Year and take care.
The “disturbances” and flurries have left nothing for western Kentucky since Christmas Eve. What’s disturbing is to see Alabama and now apparently South Carolina getting big snows – ugh Mother Nature! Oh well, so it goes. Rodger in Dodger
It has made it to 10 degrees now in Athens ohio, and have been having light snow and flurries all morning
Thanks Chris! Happy New Year everyone!
If we are dependent on snow from the northwest flow ,then we are out of luck. This flow has been extremely weak for several years now. Still haven’t seen a flake in my area (Huntington) since Saturday.
u know the NW flow does well here in the WV mountains…got 3 inches of snow Saturday night …and its flurried off and on all day and evening today
17 and sunny in Lexington right now. Just took the dogs for a 2 mile walk–really not bad if you dress for it.
I walked my dog just before sunset (about 19 in Nashville). Didn’t seem too bad at first but turns out the light breeze was at my back. Thus going back home in the other direction was a bit of a sting to the face. Glad I had my scarf.
Incidentally, the dog seems to care little when it’s cold. Her attitude has not rubbed off on me……I’m ready for spring 😉 .
The excitement for a potential snow has left the building. I for one no longer care whether it snows or not…I just want milder temperatures to come back.
No Pain No Gain!
Seriously, this winter is far worse than last year’s snow less winter.
Snow becomes extinct in west ky.
While all of KY is more than a bit snow anemic, you poor west KY folks are snow anorexic this year, so far. All of southern KY folks are in bad shape too but the far West part of the state is terrible through current for 2017-2018 season totals! North Central and NE KY have had the most but, seasonally, still not much to brag about:/
Rinse and repeat
When a decent storm does come our way, it will rain. The ol rain, turn cold, warmup up for rain, and repeat.
Brutal here just north of Cincinnati, Hamilton, Ohio, -7 this morning with a windchill of -21 at 6 a.m. As of 5 p.m., 7 degrees and a windchill of -7. Only have app’ 2″ of snow on the ground. Been snow covered since Christmas Eve here.
Sup KeavyMan Long time no see
Not much. Had a great Christmas and now praying for a GREAT New Years. You?
Yep 2.5 of snow on the ground here in Athens and had -9 this morning we are sitting at 10 degrees right now
This is the most negative comment site on the Internet. You can’t control the weather, folks…
I remember walking out onto the frozen Ohio River as a kid in 1977. Sure hope I don’t get the chance to do that again but it’s certainly looking that way! I’m a die hard snow lover but just freezing is the pits!
