Good evening, folks. We continue to track a cold and snowy looking pattern as we close in on the month of February. It’s a pattern we’ve been highlighting for a while now and things look to be on track. As many of you are filly aware, your friendly weatherdude starts to hit spring mode about this time of year, so he isn’t too happy about this. π
The Thursday into Thursday night system continues to get bullied by the weekend systems working in quickly behind it. This trend has been there for several days, with a rain to quick-hitting mix and snow scenario taking place. The fast movement of this will keep any accumulations on the light side, with the southeast having the best chance at seeing sticking snow.
You can see this well on the European Model…
With snow systems quickly returning by late Saturday into early next week, the chance for region-wide accumulating snows are greatly increased.
The European Model through early next week…
The Canadian…
The GFS…
The GFS Ensembles…
If we add the following week onto the GFS Ensembles, you can clearly see trend continuing…
“Spring” weatherdude continues to say “Go big or go home”, Old Man. π
Enjoy your evening and take care.
I’m sorry but I really can’t trust any weather source until 2 days out. This Thursday storm really is disappointing me. Is there a chance that all of the rain will freeze on the surfaces? Just curious
Troy….there you go: The GFS has Middleboro at 8 inches through Monday:P
I can see the potential there for the next few systems, but that warm air will battle our accumulation totals, especially for SE KY:(
lol! We all know that will change and dwindle to near nothing before the weekend. π I’ve already settled for the inch for the season so far, which is an inch more than last year. Better than nothing! hahaha
Thanks Chris. Come on now Chris. You usually donβt get this bad till mid February. Buck up, weather guru! When we start getting to the middle and end of February, Iβll be right there with you! βοΈ
Is it just models over-estimating things so many days out, or, is our atmosphere losing moisture? Maybe it’s just me, or maybe it’s just a Kanawha Valley, WV thing, but it seems like the storms just lose their moisture when they get here…I could swear the rain and snow approaches the Ohio river and then just dries up! I’m afraid it hits a big cloud of chemicals or something and just dehydrates π
I know what you mean. Happens all the time in Putnam County. Especially with these so called northwest flow snows and the ones that start as rain.
Some of the biggest snow storms have usually came in February and in the first half of March. We had a blizzard on March 11, 1993. We had another blizzard in February of 1997 or 1998. Donβt ever underestimate late winter storms.
Hooray for late winter storm hope!!!! π
I was a kid during the 1993 blizzard, and it is THE STORM to compare all winter weather threats too! Nothing has quite come close to that storm in SE KY except maybe the 1994 Jan Snow/ice storm….some bad winters in that time span there:)
I remember that one too! We walked to the Randalls (that place was still around!) because there was so much snow we couldn’t get out of the driveway for almost a week! But I think the snow I remember best is the good ole’ 98 “dusting”. I was will never forget walking out of a Lexington Catholic basketball game and laughing with my friends about the flurries and how joking about how Fayette County would probably get a snow day and we probably wouldn’t. Little did we know we’d wake up to a foot of snow and an entire week off. It was a teenagers dream π And it was a teacher’s dream when it happened in 2015. And I’d love it again any time now! ;P
This is Ohio I speak of. But I remember in 2005 on april 27th, which is my brothers bday. it snowed 10inches in the Sandusky area just north of Columbus.
Reading all these posts, It just warms my heart. I know it doesn’t happen very often, but oh, how it sticks with us. Snow storms, I believe, brings families so much closer together. What is it about snow that bonds us? How could something so cold be so warm? I think it’s a connection between science and God. Isn’t that what it’s all about? Truth that we have discovered and its connection with God. None of us may see another flake this season, and that would end up being ok because all of us can close our eyes for a moment and see a quick flash of times gone by. Times that are worth more than any earthly riches. Think back to a snowy memory and the love that went with it. π
VERY, VERY NICELY SAID ! GOD BLESS
Amen. Bring on the memories! And bring on the snow to make them!
yep who remembers the 1987 STORM that fell now I’m not exact, but it was in late March time frame because we Clay County won the State Tourney Basketball and were going to play Indiana state champs and when we left there was 21 inches in my back yard when we left. that was a monster. now I know there some my old schoolers around here that member that one as well.
I was only 13 years old my ole brain had a lot of damage, but I remember feeding the birds on ole tree stump that year and few other big storms we had. until 2 years ago we had been on a big snow drought. yea Feb is aa prime month to get a OLD SCHOOL storm as well as March as you start to see warmer air try start working in and u get the right mix and BOOM BIG DADDY WET SNOW can hit. as Ive got older I’m not as gung ho on snow as I used to be, but if it will it will. I was happy 2 years ago because my Nieces and Nephews had never seen a big snow meaning a foot or more so that was cool. now a days, with the rising heat bills etc I’m just fine with missing out on major snow events. but if we get one hey LET IT RIP SKIP as my dead daddy would say ole ROLO be tracking away!!!!!
I remember. π I was a sophomore in high school. The snow came on the Thursday night/Friday morning before Spring Break. We were out that Friday and covered up in snow for most of the next week. That was one county over from you, Leslie County.
