Good evening, folks. Wet snow continues to push across Kentucky this evening with accumulations rangingย from coatings to a few inches. As temps continue to drop, road conditions will go downhill quickly by late evening into the overnight.
I really don’t have much to add to the current setup, but I do want to emphasis the flash freeze potential. We are likely to ice things up pretty good tonight with temps dropping into the teens. Travel will worsen throughout the evening, and likely even after the snow stops.
Wind chills will also be way down there tonight, with some single digit wind chills showing up.
Let’s track our snowy evening…

Hhhhhmmmmm…..no comment about the weekend setup. Must be another no big deal.
Rain
Grab your umbrella Sunday.
Sunday and next Wednesday will be repeats of Today and this past Monday. Rain ending as a little snow.
I agree! I’m officially calling the ashland area….. the no snow zone. Can I get a big AMEN from the congregation????
Back edge of the precip. nearing Ashland and it is still raining near Huntington. Just as I suspected, cold air never catches the precip in the tri-state area. In 2015 Winter didn’t start until Valentines Day. If all these systems keep raining themselves out in the next 2 weeks then I think we can put wraps another on another disappointing Winter. Just my 2 cents.
Are you KIDDING me??? Never catches the precip?? Who posted that they got five inches of snow (FIVE!) just a few weeks ago? Sorry to pick on you, Jimbo but I just get so SO tired of all the negativity here. I would skip the comments entirely but I like to read through them for at least semi-objective insights from others and see what the on-the-ground weather reports are from folks around the area. But itโs seriously almost not even worth it anymore bc of all the moping, whining and complete lack of memory/objectivity.
Rant over.
Five inches of snow is better than nothing, but not exactly an epic snow filled winter ๐
North Richmond I think has six or seven total inches this winter… Call it at 6.5″ ๐ Seriously though, the downer folks do have the wimpy results over the past two years to support them. Who can blame them? Well, they COULD not fall for the models- cherry picked for entertainment only purposes. The models have been AWFUL for snow forecasts and the NAM and Euro- especially so it seems.
That one didn’t start as rain. And by the way it snow for 30 minutes on my way home from work . So technically the cold did catch the snow briefly.
I meant to say the cold did catch the precipitation briefly.
You are being too kind ๐
I probably shouldnt speak for someone else, but since I live in Jimbo’s part of the world, I have to say I dont see his comments as negative…I think we’re just wanting to see some snow like there used to be–I mean, it IS winter after all! As the years go by, we see less and less of it, and we get dissapointed & frankly weirded out by it. We’re nostalgic for those snowfalls of our youths & want to relive that from time to time. In fact, there were posts on this blog just the other day where folks were sharings memories of this snowstorm or that snowstorm & mentioning how amazing it is that the events surrounding those snowfalls create memories that stick with us for a lifetime.
But the climate is just so different now–and face it folks, that ain’t supposed to happen during any one person’s lifetime. Something has changed, and not likely for the better, and it just feels weird.
You are totally correct Stormtracker, but don’t mention those things outload…the climate deniers will send their thugs for you. Lol
Thanks for the kind words. I would rather have friends than enemies any day. And you are right, snowstorms do take a lot of us back in time and remind us of fond memories. It takes me back to my childhood and the great Winters of the late 70’s. Winter does seem to start later and end earlier every year. As far as the blog, I just call it like I see it. And my area most of the time I see rain.
Aww thereโs the blogโs little ray of sunshine…
Look out here come the rain this weekend. To much push from the southern jet pushing cold north.
Just Ugh, that’s all
Nothing but rain in Harrison County.
Definitely got the coating in south Lexington.
Up to an inch in Monroe Co. KY, dusting in Clay Co. TN
Just now turning over here in Harlan and seems like it is pushing the gas to move out before doing much in SE KY:(
This 1-3″ round will fail to even leave a dusting here which is exactly what the HRRR has been showing for here since yesterday yet was no mentioned by anyone and the NAM was highlighted instead. At this point all I can do is laugh…
The Not Accurate Model is picked and good for pies and sundaes ๐
The 0z NAM run is not great.
Looks like another bust on its way this weekend.
It can’t be a bust if it nails the forecast.
LOL! Good Point
I don’t think Chris will be going into threat mode for the upcoming weekend event.
Nope! It is “on target” if shows lots of snow and lost or “waffling” if it does not show much snow ๐ That is how the mind of the snow fans work ๐ The models then BUST, since they showed snow at one time or another ๐
Tonight already done? Looks that way on the map. Seems a nothing burger, since the wind will help dry the roads off, so less slick spots than without the wind. Weekend seems only a significant snow if you cherry pick models- regardless of their non worth.
NAM for snow over past two years = Not Accurate Model.
“NAM for snow over past two years = Not Accurate Model.”
So true, yet everyone will still cherry pick and gravitate to it (or any of the other useless models ftm) when they are showing what people want to see. It’s actually kind of comical. The fool me once (or 100 times), thing obviously doesn’t apply to snow lovers. ๐
We still haven’t changed over in eastern KY sleet. This makes me what to join chris on spring mode we miss out here in the east we are always right on the line, well I can look forward to spring. I have a question is tommorow ground hogs day???????
Sure been a interesting winter so far..Weak la Nina’s apparently kills the STJ or a overwhelming -EPO..Who Knows..Going forward according to model’s the MJO is forecast to go into phase 8..That should bring more cold into the east and a better chance for snow .Again who knows..All these teleconnections is just voodoo forecasting to me..Way to many moving parts..
This. CB’s job is harder due to awful models (for snow) and Kentucky’s meteorological fence location.
Ah, the mythical fence.
No complaints from this resident of north Richmond. The snow was perfect.
