Good Sunday, everyone. We have a nice little system working across the state this early today, bringing snow, rain and a combo of the two. This system is part of a trend, with two more winter weather threats on the way for the upcoming week.
Here’s a quick recap of how today tries to play out:
- Early this morning is going to be very interesting across parts of central and eastern Kentucky. The initial precipitation starts as rain, then goes to snow for some areas. The heavier the precipitation, the better the snow potential for any one location.
- Those getting in on the snow can see it come down pretty darn hard for a while, leading to a slushy accumulation.
- The greatest potential for this happening is across north central and northeastern parts of the state. There’s the chance for a thumper in a few spots
- Any area is fair game for, at least a coating, but that doesn’t mean EVERYONE gets snow. ๐
- The precipitation goes over to light rain later in the day, then back to some light snow tonight.
Following this is a slightly stronger system arriving later Tuesday into Wednesday. One band of light snow may move in early Tuesday, with the actual storm system arriving later. This should put the fence right on top of Kentucky.

Virga storm so far in Frankfort, may as well temps close to 40?
What happened to all the cold air that was supposed to be pouring into the area? High temps for the next week are all above freezing.
So what?
Point being, the models can’t even outlook cold air, yet alone snow ๐
Well, several Mets talked about this pattern flip for weeks and said it would be like December, but with moisture to work with and it’s turned into average temps and rain. The words “it could be a memorable February” were used more than once. So when that forecast doesn’t pan out I am interested in knowing what did/didn’t happen. I have no problem with Mets telling us how they were right or they were first when they nail a forecast, but I rarely see them own up to a miss. It has happened, but it’s rare. And no, I’m not just talking about this blog. I worry that in the age of social media Mets are competing for clicks so they put out information they know will bring people to their Facebook, Twitter, or page.
that’s all this one is….
Virga here to
Snow in Frankfort, but temp is 36, looks like another deck duster, oh well it is still fun to see it fall.
More snow than my part of Tennessee has had all year and of course the rain is going to wash it all away. Useless to wish for all that โcold airโ we were supposed to have by now. Had to wake up early just to see if we had snow for once because itโll probably all be gone by daylight. This stinks!
Our power just went out here in Northern Pulaski about 15 minutes ago.
Mine went out at 1:00 this morning here in Valley Station, just southwest of Louisville. Winds about 35 mph normally does not knock out the power but….I didn’t know we would have any strong winds overnight. The strong wind gusts calmed down after about 15 minutes.
Update, power went out around 5:17 and is still out as of 8:43
I am preparing myself for a month of typical cold rain.
Yep, good ol’ KY winter
Thanks Chris, The fast moving weak systems continue to move with the west / northwest flow. Currently, in my county it’s a mixture of light rain and snow with a temperature of thirty four degrees. This is typical February weather for ENSO – La nina winter in the Ohio Valley. Forecaster’s at NOAA are saying we could move into ENSO- neutral pattern later this winter and spring. What weather could we expect from the neutral pattern ?
Areas with cold air aloft ( mountain areas ) could see some decent snows this upcoming week. That’s something to look forward to. It also could happen about any where in the state.
That looks to be a lot of rain
just ugh, I’m ready to throw in the towel
It snowed hard in Lexington for a while…starting to taper. But my subdivision roads are covered….but I’m bummed knowing the temps all week will be above freezing … Oh well… can’t control the weather..Or can we?
This winter is like the Cats. Looks like all the pieces are in place, but still under performing. Cats reasons are no true point guard and no consistent defense. That can be fixed next year (hope), but our winter issue is more difficult- Kentucky is a fence.
UK problems is Calipari is not getting his recruits like he use to. The one and done system may very well be possibly a start of a thing in the past. Prime example (there are others) is a 5 star top recruit in the nation that plays for New Albany High School in Southern Indiana a kid named Romeo Langford. Every college coach in the nation has thrown in there hat aggressively including coach Calipari. Romeo played for coach Calipari this past summer in Egypt, Romeo didnโt see much playing time do to back spasms. Nonetheless Calipari would love to have Romeo but Romeo chooses to go a different route. Romeo is basically a local kid, one and done player who had spent time with Calipari in the summer and has still decided to go to a different college. Vanderbilt, Indiana, Kansas, or Duke. UK just not remotely in the picture of schools. Back in the day Calipari would have Romeo in the bag. Now Iโm not saying Calipari wonโt get excellent recruits but the level of excellent recruits that Calipari gets might not be as strong. Reason maybe is the land scape of college basketball is a changing.
Apparently Cal coaching that and losing did more harm than good. Bad impressions by some players. Cal probably thought it would be a good recruiting tool, but apparently a reversed effect.
There is no fence, dome, wall or whatever.
Uh huh.
You have the wrong idea.
The “Fence” is a dividing line between precipitation types. It is not used the same way as a “Dome” or “Wall” would be. The fence can be packed up and taken anywhere at will. Just like good meteorological advice will stop coming to those people who don’t want to hear it.
Pouring the snow in eastern Fleming County
As of this morning, much of eastern KY has some sort of snow cover…

That thumping snow is in greenup….its pouring
Looks like half an inch rounding up….. Expectations around here have taken a tumble ๐ ๐
