Good afternoon, everyone. Our major snowstorm is pulling away from southeastern Kentucky, leaving behind double digit snow totals in some areas. The heavy, wet snow caused power issues and brought down trees across parts of the region. This turned into our 4th major snowstorm since late February of 2015. Don’t tell me we don’t get big snows around here. 😉
I’m watching the northwest skies over the next few days, as snow showers dive in. The first batch arrives later this afternoon and evening…
The next round comes into the region late Tuesday into Tuesday night and should be more widespread. This has a chance to put down some light accumulations. Here’s the GFS for that time…
The Hi Res NAM is a little more streaky, but shows local snow squalls can really put it down…
Temps remain very cold through early Thursday, but rebound some by the end of the week. That said, the GFS is throwing a monkey wrench into things, bringing a rain/snow mix by Friday…
#teamspring continues to take a beating!
I will have an update on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm and with another update later this evening. Make it a good one and take care.
Let’s get this straight! Mr Bailey was the ONLY met I saw anywhere talking about this storm’s potential last week! Other mets that Rodger follows were poo-poo’ing it, saying the models were overdoing it even on Saturday. And, of course, the NWS had no idea as usual.
Big KUDOS to Mr Bailey! He’s not always right but he can sniff out a system days in advance!

Four inches here in Knox County. We are talking about how high we set our mower decks to right? Lol. On a serious note, nothing but green lawn here in this part of the state. Two decade drought and still counting for us.
I noticed since living here we don’t get a lot of “wet snows”.. It’s usually super cold if it snows. But this was a really wet snow and it’s crazy beautiful. I wonder what the official total is at KLEX? I noticed the 2:30 am climate data showed 3 inches, but still snowing at that point. I’m thinking between 5 and 8 inches.
KLEX is reporting 9.0 inches. 3.0 yesterday and 6.0 today. I am sure this is a very scientific measurement just like March 2015 was…
That brings the season total to 16.6 inches. I wonder if that means Chris got his November Winter Forecast for snow in Lexington correct this year?
16.6 in Lexington? In my part of Richmond we have several dusting amounting to about 1 inch, a 4 inch surprise and the 8.5 inch fall of last night/this morning. So that looks like 13.5 inches to me. Not sure what to think of that…
Anywhere between 0-12 inches of snow fell statewide all about location.
Yup
Richmond apparently got more than 6″ that I thought. Hard to tell due to heavy snow compacting. Trees though are weighed down and having power outages.
I told you the band was wider yesterday evening
Still, we remain bare down in far SE KY
Thanks Chris. Glad someone got some good snow…. unfortunately, it was not in our neck of the woods. Oh well. I’m definitely aboard #teamspring now, so bring the warm weather and sunshine! We actually got about half an inch here in my part of the county, but it’s already gone, mostly. Sigh. Have a great afternoon everyone and those of you who got it, enjoy the snow!
For once, I’m glad we were left out (as usual). I’m in no mood for one of these late winter fiascos. I’m in full Spring mode!
Chris we finally got the heavy wet snow late last night in PIkeville pretty but could watch it melt as it hit the car but as always you were right on thanks for all you do I have joined#teamspring
4-5 inches here in far western,ky
The sun has melted any trace of snow here in knott co
Shown on the twitter live feed: Right there is Harlan in the dark blue for 20 to 30 inches from 1993… I had 28 at the house and only 10 years old…yipppie! There really hasn’t been a storm since that in SE KY. 2015 was impressive but not close down here. We a couple other ole school storms in the 90s as well: Jan of 1994 and Jan of 1996….crappy since down this part of the state for the ‘biggies’ anyways!
Good chance you’ll never see 20″+ of snow from one event ever again. The ’93 super storm was once in a generation. Rodger in Dodger
Not true, Terry is a youngster. I’m positive he will see many snowstorms of twenty plus inches. Maybe yet this year ?
