Good Saturday, everyone. Friday’s severe weather event turned into a biggie for many area of the bluegrass state. Wind damage was extensive as storms packed hurricane force gusts across areas of central Kentucky. Now, we focus on more rounds of showers and storms rumbling across the state this weekend and into next week.
A huge upper level low spins into the Ohio Valley today, with spiraling bands of showers and storms around it. The action is pretty scattered early today, but will increase this afternoon and evening. Additional strong to locally severe storms are possible…
This low will then sit and spin right on top of us into early next week, bringing more rounds of rain and storms…
Locally heavy rains and cooler than normal temps show up under that low. You will also notice the big area of low pressure rolling up the east coast this weekend. That almost has a tropical/hybrid look to it.
The shower and storm action doesn’t stop there. Watch additional rounds of rain and boomers take us from Wednesday through Thursday, ahead of another cold front working in…
Cooler than normal temps come in behind that front, with the increasing potential for another wet weather maker shooting in next weekend into early the following week…
I have you all set to do some Saturday tracking…
Have a great day and take care.
This blog update should say, “Super Wet Weather Rolls On.” Some of us are likely to achieve our annual rainfall for 2018 before September at the rate things are going, and the upcoming pattern through August could deliver it. I am now nearing 42 inches year-to-date and still pouring tonight!
I know. I think more often than not the years here always end up being above normal precip than below. My power just came back on after almost 12 hours. So happy. Chris, I think the storm was at it’s most intense when it was crossing into Fayette from Woodford. I seriously thought it was the end and I’m not being dramatic. If I don’t see another T-storm for a couple of years I’ll be OK with that.
Did you get any pictures? We didn’t get that here in Eastern Kentucky. We had some general thunderstorm activity, but nothing notable. Scattered reports around the county of tree damage.
Congrats to you for having your power comeback on.
I lost mine around 9pm last night in Louisville, and it has still not come on.
When we had the Ice Storm in January 2009, we were without power for 15 days !
You must be in or around the St.Matthews area in Louisville?
Our power went out yesterday at 4:12pm on the South/East side of Lexington and we just got it back on at 12:30 today. I appreciate the KU workers and the jobs they do.
And I still detest thunderstorms.
MarkLex, I would have to agree I got nailed with egg size hail damage to my car. My daughter has been without power since 7:30 last night her estimated time of getting power back on is sometime on Monday.
Look at the F6 product from the NWS for Louisville’s weather yesterday. A trace, indicated by the ‘T’ is listed under the ‘Snow’ category. That’s because ice pellets and hail are lumped in this category.
I recall a location I believe in west Texas that recorded two separate instances of 2″ of accumulating hail for the month of June. That 4″ total of hail made up over half of the snowfall for the year.
Thanks Chris for all your reporting on this severe storm event. You have done a great job keeping everyone safe. In my County of Taylor we received a very heavy and long lasting thunderstorm just after midnight. Total rainfall was around 1.19 “. And for the year the total is around 38.33”. I’m sure we will be adding to that over the next several days. Stay safe everyone and try to enjoy your Saturday.
Im thankful for the 9 days in a row of dry weather we were fortunate enough to get last week.. it was nice while it lasted.
Yeah, we may have 90 days straight that are wet starting from yesterday..lol☺
I think we will have an explosive evening for storms, at least in SE KY today. ….Been sunny all morning in Harlan and cumulionimbus are rising fast here after 1:00 PM!
