Good Sunday, folks. Our big upper level low is spinning right on top of the area today, bringing rounds of rain and cool temps. This spinning system will hang around a few more days, as temps continue to run cooler than normal. This is part of a larger overall pattern settling in for the second half of summer.
Today will be rather gloomy at times, with lots of clouds and showers around. A few thunderstorms will also be noted, and I’m wondering if a few of these can produce some small hail. We will also need to be on guard for an area of high rain totals that can cause some local high water issues. Track away…
All of this is coming from this highly anomalous upper level low spinning across the Ohio Valley…
I saw a tweet from one of the area NWS offices titled “Typical July Weather”. Ummm… I have no words for anyone who thinks this is a normal July pattern.
More showers and storms will be noted for Monday and Tuesday as our system still impacts the region…
Another cold front moves in by the end of the week unleashing another below normal temperature pattern for much of the country, with another following as we close July and enter into August. Check out the look from the European Ensembles…
We will also see additional rounds of showers and storms spread into the mix during this time.
The new run of the European Weeklies show our wet pattern continuing through, at least, Labor Day weekend. Check out the rainfall anomalies…
All that wet weather across the country comes with a cool price. Check out how much of the country averages cooler than normal for the same time period…
Way too much rain for my liking.
I’m not a fan either. Too much rain on the tomatoes I think, mine are not doing very good at all. Maybe I can hope for late season crop. Late season is better then no season.
Tomatoes will be fine. All they need is more sunshine, and I hope that happens next month.
Thank you, captain obvious.
Is it just me or has any one else notice our annual rainfall seems a lot higher than several years ago? Since the 2000s, most of the years have exceeded the average annual stated rainfall which is stated around 50 inches, at least in Harlan. I wish I would had recorded all of my totals over the years. Only 2007 and 2008 came way under the average in SE KY!
Yes, Terry. I think it is the reaction from the dust bowl like drought of the late 1980’s.
Thanks Chris for the update. I agree with you and not the NWS about our July temperatures. I don’t recall in my 67 years have I ever seen a Summer like the one we are experiencing now. Can’t wait to see what our Autumn and Winter will be like ? Have a great Sunday everyone.
I suspect that our winter pattern in Kentucky will be a below normal pattern again while the west remains above normal as it has for several past seasons. It seems Kentuckys warm months are trimming down while the cooler – cold months are becoming longer in duration. Depressing for us nature loving – gardening folk.
That’s a completely false statement
I would gladly take the cooler weather, except for the constant thunderstorm and flood threat. However, with the constant thunderstorms and heavy rain, I have to be on guard every single day since I live in a very flood prone area, and that is not a very fun experience. Not at all. Need to visit some close friends and my girlfriend too, but can’t when there are thunderstorms and flooding every single day. Sad but true.
You have flooding and thunderstorms every single day?
Hmmm…….strange difference in forecasts. South Ky. Shows highs of high 80 s starting back Thursday. Hardly a cold front.
You realize that’s AHEAD of the cold front.
We finally got the tree cut up and dragged to the curb. No way this is fitting in a yard waste container or yard waste bags. I hope they pick it up.
Use twine and bundle in 4-ft lengths no more than 2″ diameter…It took 20 bundles the last one I did. And it might take a couple of trips for them to get it all…or wait for a dry spell and burn the rest of the brush if you have the yard for it.
Hey Mike thanks
but I actually read on Kentucky.com just now they are giving options to people in Lexington to deal with larger debris. It looks like I can call 311 and they send a truck out to haul the debris away as long it’s it’s placed on the curb, which it is.
Good to hear…glad everyone was safe.
