This is a special weekend for those across the commonwealth of Kentucky as the eyes of the world will be on the state for one of the all time great sporting events. The potential is there for the eyes of the weather world to be on this region for totally different reason… severe thunderstorms and flooding.

I feel we have set the stage nicely over the past several days so I am not going to waste a lot of time rehashing the setup. We have a VERY rich moisture supply streaming northward out of the Gulf of Mexico. This will collide with a slow moving front that will ease across the Mississippi River later Saturday into Sunday. Rounds of severe thunderstorms will be likely along and ahead of the front. These storms will be slow movers and a lot of areas will see repeat rounds of storms leading to the potential for serious flooding. A FLASH FLOOD WATCH is already out for Saturday and Sunday for central and western Kentucky. A GREAT call by the NWS in Louisville to go ahead and alert the public with the watch well in advance.

Here is the area that I am most concerned with for Saturday…

You can see Louisville is right in the middle of the risk area so that does not bode well for Derby goers. The amount of thunderstorm action Saturday is likely to lessen the farther east you go across the area. Scattered stuff will certainly be possible, but the heaviest rains should remain across central and western Kentucky.

I should note the Storm Prediction Center is a bit farther east than I am with the severe threat on Saturday…

The slow moving front will then move across the rest of the region Sunday into Sunday night bringing the threat for severe weather and high water farther east…

I want to stress this is has the potential to be a DANGEROUS situation for, especially ,areas along and west of Interstate 75. The blog will be kicked up a notch this weekend so make sure you check back for updates and live chats.

How about some good news! Today looks awesome with sunny skies and highs in the 80s!

Have a great Friday and take care.

Good Friday everyone and welcome to Kentucky Derby Weekend.
