Good morning gang. I wanted to just drop by to share a few quick thoughts with you. So far… I have not seen much to change my mind on how this all plays out. Things appear to be on track up to this point. A few points…

1. This is some very heavy rain across the south.

2. The heavier the precip is this afternoon and evening… the greater the chance it has to go over to snow due to the cooling process.

3. The short range RUC Model is actually trying it’s best to bring a round of heavy early evening snows toward the bluegrass region.

4. Pinpointing where we see our heavy snow band setting up this evening will be our main challenge later today.

I see  A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY is out for much of central and eastern Kentucky. Better than nothing I suppose.

I will have a full update coming up around noon or a little after.

Good Saturday everyone and thanks for blogging with us! This is going to be a fun day of tracking the winter storm that will be impacting the state into early Sunday. It’s a day that is sure to bring you several updates from me and will also feature numerous updated snowfall forecast maps as we get a better handle on how this thing is playing out. “Nowcasting” will be the name of the game today folks!

That being said… I did manage to put together a FIRST CALL FOR SNOWFALL map for you guys. I reserve the right to change this bad boy as many times as needed today. Here is a look at what I am thinking right now for snowfall through Saturday Night…



Those lines are nowhere being set in stone and the numbers can go up or down from what they are showing there. Anytime when you are dealing with a storm that is creating it’s own cold air (Dynamic Cooling)… you literally have to play it by ear hour by hour to see what the storm is capable of.

Rain will quickly overspread southern Kentucky through the early morning hours on this Saturday. As the precip starts… colder air will work down to the surface from above and temps will drop. One thing to watch for this morning will be just how quickly do some areas see the rain mix with or change to snow. If we are seeing any mixing or flakes before afternoon… that should be a good sign for those who want a good sized snow out of this later in the day into Saturday night. Temps will be critical today as usual. Most areas should stay above freezing through the day then fall below the 32 degree mark by early evening. Here is your temp tracker from the Kentucky Mesonet…




Something else is catching my eye for later Sunday into Sunday night and that is the development of a secondary storm across the southeastern US. This storm has been progged by the models to form for several days now. What is getting my attention is the fact some of the models are now trying their best to come farther west with this stronger storm. Some are even now showing snow lingering through Monday morning across extreme southeastern Kentucky. Check out what I am talking about with the short range Canadian model…

As you can see… we have a huge closed low moving across the deep south with a deepening surface low tracking into the Carolinas. There is a 1049 High pumping in cold air form the north and northwest. That setup may bring flakes all the way into parts of Florida! Wow!  One could also argue that same setup may try to inch a little farther west with time as well. That is something to track today as well. As if I needed something else to worry about!

Those last maps kind of remind me of a certain setup that brought a “dusting” around here back in 1998. Not saying that will happen though.
