It&#8217;s a seasonally cold day across the bluegrass state, as a few flakes fly in the central and east. The pattern for the rest of January is for up and down temps to continue, but it&#8217;s the setup for early February getting my attention.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s when we will be seeing the pattern reverting back toward a harsh one for much of the country. I will get to that in a minute. Let&#8217;s concentrate on where we going in the short-term, first.<\/p>\n<p>Highs today are upper 30s and low 40s for many, with the possibility for a coating or two of flakes. The best chance is early today across the central and east&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/sirocco.accuweather.com\/nx_mosaic_640x480_public\/sir\/inmaSIRKY_.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/builder.zoomradar.net\/zoomradar_weather_map\/weather_page.php?key=9nNfA2mOMDiJ4LG\" width=\"560\" height=\"462\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"seamless\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Thursday finds our thermometers shooting back into the 40s, with the 50s waiting on us for Friday and Saturday. That&#8217;s ahead of another system rolling our way in the form of a cold front. Showers will quickly increase this weekend, but can we get some flakes behind the front?<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s, at least, a possibility, depending on how much of a wave of low pressure we can get to develop along the front. Odds continue to favor a pretty progressive system&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/?attachment_id=27766\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27766\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27766\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/GFS-GIf-17.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"786\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A seasonal brand of chill comes in behind that, but should get turned around pretty quickly by the middle of next week. That&#8217;s when a milder surge of air comes into play for the final day of January, ahead of a massive change coming as we head into February.<\/p>\n<p>The GFS is really rushing this change, with a deep trough invading by the end of next week&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/?attachment_id=27768\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27768\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27768\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/GFS-3-4.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"638\" \/><\/a>The brings a true arctic front in here and fires up a big storm system&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/?attachment_id=27767\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27767\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27767\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/GFS-2-6.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"786\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s probably overdone, but something similar to that is possible with the pattern I see taking shape for February.<\/p>\n<p>This early February\u00a0flip back to a harsh winter setup comes from a major blocking event in the eastern Pacific into Alaska&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/?attachment_id=27758\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-27758\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-27758\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Euro-4-5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"519\" height=\"445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Euro-4-5.png 519w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Euro-4-5-300x257.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 519px) 100vw, 519px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Combine that with a Negative Arctic Oscillation and you can get some major cold back into the country.
