It&#8217;s a chillier pattern taking shape across the region today, but bigger changes are on the way for the first full week of December. Several different systems will roll through here and could put down a lot of rain and even bring some winter weather. This is a wild pattern that deserves a long post so buckle up.<\/p>\n<p>Temps today are down compared to the past several days, but are still a bit above normal as a weak front moves in. This is also touching off some early day isolated showers across southern Kentucky&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/builder.zoomradar.net\/zoomradar_weather_map\/weather_page.php?key=dlFZs5IY4VCw7bK\" width=\"560\" height=\"450\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" seamless=\"seamless\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/radar-large.asp?partner=netweather&amp;traveler=0&amp;site=KY_&amp;type=SIR&amp;anim=1&amp;level=state&amp;large=1#\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"jetpack-lazy-image jetpack-lazy-image--handled lazyloaded\" src=\"https:\/\/sirocco.accuweather.com\/nx_mosaic_640x480_public\/sir\/inmaSIRKY_.gif\" alt=\"\" usemap=\"#largemap\" data-src=\"https:\/\/sirocco.accuweather.com\/nx_mosaic_640x480_public\/sir\/inmaSIRKY_.gif\" data-lazy-loaded=\"1\" \/><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Gusty southerly winds kick in on Sunday as temps surge one more time. The models have their typical differences on where the heaviest rains show up&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>NAM<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NAM-2-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51724\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NAM-2-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"962\" height=\"761\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NAM-2-1.png 962w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NAM-2-1-300x237.png 300w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NAM-2-1-768x608.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 962px) 100vw, 962px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The GFS actually has a swath of higher amounts&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-2-3.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51728\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-2-3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"969\" height=\"759\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-2-3.png 969w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-2-3-300x235.png 300w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-2-3-768x602.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 969px) 100vw, 969px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Temps crash into the 30s behind this front and stay there through the rest of the day. Gusty winds make it feel much colder than that through Tuesday morning. Here are the wind chills from the GFS from 1am Monday through 7am Tuesday&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-8.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51726\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-8.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The EURO has even colder wind chills&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/EURO-3-4.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51742\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/EURO-3-4.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s quite the change folks!<\/p>\n<p>The EURO has been showing troughs in the west coming east and they&#8217;re showing up deeper with each run. Now we have the GFS joining in on the party, giving us a better potential for some winter weather. Here&#8217;s how the GFS sees the next system arriving late Tuesday into Wednesday&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-9.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51733\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-9.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That certainly looks more interesting as it would bring rain, a mix and some light snow to the region through early Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The Canadian is trying to do something similar&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Canadian-7.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51730\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Canadian-7.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ironically, the EURO has now lost this system as it keeps the streams separate&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/EURO-8.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51735\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/EURO-8.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The system coming behind this next weekend is looking stronger and stronger with big thunderstorms to snow on the GFS&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-2-3.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51731\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-2-3.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The EURO has a weaker system ahead of that on Thursday, but the weekend system is even stronger than what the GFS has&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/EURO-2-7.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51740\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/EURO-2-7.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As far as total rainfall is concerned through next weekend, the GFS is still showing troubling amounts&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-3-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51738\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-3-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"973\" height=\"757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-3-2.png 973w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-3-2-300x233.png 300w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-3-2-768x598.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 973px) 100vw, 973px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Canadian continues to be a little lighter and farther northwest&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Canadian-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51737\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Canadian-5.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"967\" height=\"755\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Canadian-5.png 967w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Canadian-5-300x234.png 300w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Canadian-5-768x600.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 967px) 100vw, 967px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The EURO has increased totals&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/EURO-2-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51741\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/EURO-2-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"965\" height=\"760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/EURO-2-2.png 965w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/EURO-2-2-300x236.png 300w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/EURO-2-2-768x605.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 965px) 100vw, 965px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve touched on the MJO in some recent posts and how this is moving into a more favorable phase for cold air as we get deeper into December. I suspect we are seeing the models respond to this right now.<\/p>\n<p>The latest MJO forecasts show this moving into Phase 7. Here&#8217;s the one from NCEP&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MJO.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51717\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MJO.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MJO.png 498w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MJO-278x300.png 278w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 498px) 100vw, 498px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some of the members have major amplitude as it gets into Phase 7 with a few going toward Phase 8.<\/p>\n<p>The EURO extended also goes into Phase 7&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MJO-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51718\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MJO-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"471\" height=\"517\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MJO-2.png 471w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MJO-2-273x300.png 273w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 471px) 100vw, 471px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Notice how similar that matches up with the NCEP run.<\/p>\n<p>For references, Phase 7 for December is typically much colder&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/MJO-2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51586\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/MJO-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"487\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/MJO-2.png 487w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/MJO-2-214x300.png 214w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 487px) 100vw, 487px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can see how Phase 8 is even colder.<\/p>\n<p>I will have another update later today.
