Calm weather continues across the region and we have a few more days left before things turn active again. I’m watching the potential for heavy rain and a few strong storms by late in the week before the pattern begins to turn colder into Christmas week.

As recovery efforts continue from our deadly tornado outbreak, an earthquake rattled parts of the region shortly after noon today…

Here's the epicenter of today's earthquake and how strong it shows up on the nearest seismograph in Fleming County. #KyWx pic.twitter.com/qbWv7j22Mk

— Chris Bailey (@Kentuckyweather) December 12, 2021

The extreme events of this weekend cannot be overstated.

Dry and milder weather continues around here over the next few days, but the second half of the week into the start of next weekend looks active. We have two systems set to impact our region from Thursday through Saturday. Both of these will bring showers and thunderstorms in here with the potential for a few strong storms. That said, this doesn’t look anything like what just happened here in Kentucky.

This may put down another 1″-3″ of rain across much of the region…

That will likely be followed up by another system a few days later as we kick off Christmas week. The models are split on what happens with this as some cut it right on us. Others, like the EURO, take it on a more eastern track allowing for colder air…

As colder air continues to become more involved in the pattern Christmas week, we need it to fully take control. For the professional weather folks cheerleading a mild pattern… Stop. It comes with a price that we simply want no part in paying, especially in light of what just happened around here.
