We continue to watch a very busy setup taking shape for the next several days. Rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms may very well cause some issues through the start of the upcoming weekend. All of this starts with some serious wind gusts tonight and Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Milder air is pushing in here today as that strong southwesterly wind kicks in. This isn&#8217;t from thunderstorms, but it&#8217;s ahead of a massive storm system rolling from the plains to the Great Lakes. This system may have a swath of hurricane force wind gusts&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-30.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52049\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-30.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"971\" height=\"760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-30.png 971w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-30-300x235.png 300w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GFS-30-768x601.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 971px) 100vw, 971px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>85mph gusts are showing up on that model into Iowa!! In addition to the gradient winds, there is now a MODERATE RISK for severe storms today for the upper midwest&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/public\/images\/national_swody1.png\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.spc.noaa.gov\/public\/requests\/images\/IAMNWI_swody1.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Think about that, folks. We are just over a week out from Christmas and there&#8217;s the chance for strong tornadoes in Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Let that sink in.<\/p>\n<p>Our cold front moves in on Thursday with showers and thunderstorms sliding in from the northwest. That front then slows down with areas of low pressure developing along it and moving through here Friday into Saturday. The end result is a flood and flash flood threat.<\/p>\n<p>Many areas will pick up a general 1&#8243;-3&#8243; of rain during this time, but a swath of much higher amounts will be possible.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the area most at risk for the heaviest rains&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Chris-Special.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52046\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Chris-Special.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"963\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Chris-Special.png 963w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Chris-Special-300x165.png 300w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Chris-Special-768x423.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 963px) 100vw, 963px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The NAM only goes through 7am Saturday, but the numbers from this run are staggering&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NAM-13.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-52044\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NAM-13.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"964\" height=\"757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NAM-13.png 964w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NAM-13-300x236.png 300w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NAM-13-768x603.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 964px) 100vw, 964px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The GFS has had some runs like that over the past few days, so I can&#8217;t totally discount something like that happening. With a ton of blocking showing up and the MJO going into a more favorable phase for winter weather, some massive switches will be showing up for a while.<\/p>\n<p>We will talk more about that later today.
