First off… thanks for all the reports… you guys are kicking some serious backside today and it is certainly appreciated. Moderate to heavy snow is working across much of the state right now and will begin to taper off across western parts of the state over the next few hours.

Snowfall rates of 1″ per hour with local 2″ per hour rates will be likely across much of central and eastern Ky this evening. The snow map I have out continues to be in pretty good shape. Reports of 4″-6″ of snow have been received from near Louisville northeast toward the Cincy area. Some folks near Cincy can wind up with a local 7″ or 8″ total.

Roads are snow covered and visibilites will be reduced to under a quarter of a mile at times.

Keep the reports coming and take care.

3:45pm Update

Here is a special update from the Storm Prediction Center on the heavy bands of snow working through our region…

BANDS OF MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW WILL OVERSPREAD PORTIONS OF THE
MIDDLE OHIO VALLEY REGION THROUGH LATE AFTERNOON…WITH RATES UP TO
 1 INCH PER HOUR EXPECTED.

LATEST OBSERVATIONS INDICATE THAT A BAND OF MODERATE SNOW IS
DEVELOPING ALONG THE INTERSTATE 71 CORRIDOR FROM CNTRL OHIO INTO
NWRN KY….WITH AREAS OF LIGHTER SNOW ACROSS S-CNTRL OHIO. THIS
ACTIVITY IS BEING DRIVEN BY DEEP-LAYER ASCENT AHEAD OF A TROUGH
SWINGING THROUGH THE GREAT LAKES AND OHIO VALLEY REGION. SNOWFALL
RATES ARE FORECAST TO INCREASE THROUGH THE REMAINDER OF THE
AFTERNOON AS THE STRONG ASCENT PROGRESSES EASTWARD WHILE BEING
AUGMENTED BY INCREASING 700-MB FRONTOGENESIS. FORECAST SOUNDINGS
THROUGH LATE AFTERNOON INDICATE THAT THE ASCENT WILL COINCIDE WITH
RELATIVELY DEEP AND SATURATED DENDRITIC GROWTH ZONES TO PROMOTE
EFFICIENT SNOW GROWTH. ADDITIONALLY…MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGESTS THE
DEVELOPMENT OF WEAK SLANTWISE INSTABILITY BY 00Z ACROSS PORTIONS OF
EASTERN OHIO…WHICH WILL FURTHER SUPPORT MESOSCALE BANDING AS THE
ACTIVITY SHIFTS EASTWARD. Moderate to heavy bands are lining up along and south of the Ohio River from Covington to Louisville back toward Paducah. Reports of 3″ already on the ground in far northern Kentucky have been received.

The band of moderate to heavy snow can lay down an inch or two in one hour as it rolls eastward into central Kentucky early this evening. Roads will quickly become snow covered.

Temps in southern and southeastern Ky have really spiked and that tells me this system should have some good juice with it as it rolls through. As the snow sets in… temps will quickly drop below freezing and will continue to rapidly drop from there.

Keep the reports coming and I will have more updates for you guys.

Noon Update

Good afternoon everyone. Thanks for all the reports… they are much appreciated and will really be needed for the rest of the day and evening as the steady snows move in. Things appear to be right on track in terms of the timing and the expected snowfall. The big winners will be across the north with lighter amounts the farther south you live.

More updates ahead so check back. Keep updating us on the weather where you live and take care.

7am Update

Good morning everyone… sleep is for the weak. A band of light to moderate snow we expected to develop across parts of northern Kentucky is out there and is a bit farther south and east than we first thought. Areas along and north of Interstate 64 can get in on some light accumulations over the next few hours. The short range RUC Model is showing a quick inch of snow for some all the way eastward to the Ashland area. What is the atmosphere trying to tell us with this overachieving streak of snow? Hmmm.

The main batch of snow will be setting up shop across western and northern Kentucky through this morning before slowly working eastward today into this evening as the rest of the forecast appears in good shape.

More updates as needed… keep the reports coming and take care.

Previous Update

Good Thursday everyone and welcome to a day of tracking a fast moving winter storm across our region. We have set the stage for a while now and I will give you my final thoughts and a whole lot of tracking toys to keep you busy today.

Here’s how it all plays out…

– A period of light snow will move into parts of western and northern Kentucky early this morning and could impact the morning commute for the Louisville and Cincy/Northern Ky. metros. It will be interesting to see how far east this can get.

– Snow will increase quickly from west to east this morning into the afternoon and reaching eastern Kentucky by early evening.

– Steady snows will only last for a 6 to 10 hour period.

– Most areas will see a 2 hour period of light snow to start. As the arctic front slams southward through the area… we will see a 2-4 hour window of moderate snow with some embedded heavy bursts. That will be followed by another 2 hour period of lighter snows that will quickly taper off.

– This is a fast moving snow maker with only flurries left by the wee hours of Friday morning. Snow totals will be highest in the north and lowest across the southeast.
