We continue to track a few flakes across the state through early Sunday, but our focus is on the harsh winter weather heading our way later this week into Christmas weekend. A major Ohio Valley winter storm will be followed by bitterly cold air.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight&#8217;s flakes are more of a novelty than anything else. There&#8217;s a chance for a few snow showers in the southeast and east. The models continue to dig in on a powerful Oho Valley winter storm, but they still have the typical differences in timing, strength and placement.<\/p>\n<p>All this depends on the path of the monster upper low crashing into the region. The EURO is wrapped up with this thing and has the farthest north track&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EURO-4-1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56826\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EURO-4-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The GFS has that coming in slightly farther south and not as wrapped up&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GFS-45.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56829\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GFS-45.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Just that much of a difference means a lot for the actual weather around here.<\/p>\n<p>With the farther north and more wrapped up upper low of the EURO&#8230;that means the surface low tracks a little farther west with rain changing to wind driven snow around here as bitterly cold air surges in&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EURO-37.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56821\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EURO-37.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Taken verbatim, that&#8217;s a 2&#8243;-4&#8243; wind driven snowfall across Kentucky.<\/p>\n<p>The GFS is farther east with that low and wraps it up even more as it moves through Pennsylvania and New York &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GFS-2-23.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56828\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GFS-2-23.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That run is a crushing double digit snowfall for much of the state.<\/p>\n<p>Essentially, the EURO represents our snow floor while the GFS is the ceiling.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the track and intensity&#8230; High winds and BRUTAL cold will be likely with this storm.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EURO-16.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56822\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EURO-16.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"971\" height=\"757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EURO-16.png 971w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EURO-16-300x234.png 300w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/EURO-16-768x599.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 971px) 100vw, 971px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GFS-23.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-56830\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GFS-23.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"964\" height=\"760\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GFS-23.png 964w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GFS-23-300x237.png 300w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/GFS-23-768x605.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 964px) 100vw, 964px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Both models take low temps below zero at times over the weekend. I urge everyone, including local and state governments, to start preparing now for the bitterly cold temps.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no real analog to this event and that includes the Blizzard of 1978. That&#8217;s in a league of its own.
