Rounds of heavy rain are rolling across the state today through the weekend, bringing the potential for several inches of rain. This much rain will combine with snow melt and a semi-frozen ground to give us the threat for flooding.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some headlines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A stalled southwest to northeast boundary hangs around the next few days.<\/li>\n<li>Waves of heavy rain roll along this boundary as it slowly shifts into central and eastern Kentucky.<\/li>\n<li>Rainfall totals today and Thursday range from 1&#8243;-3&#8243; in many areas.<\/li>\n<li>There&#8217;s even the chance for a few thunderstorms to show up.<\/li>\n<li>This causes some big jumps on creeks, streams and our rivers.<\/li>\n<li>Winds through this same time may gust to 40mph at times.<\/li>\n<li>Friday brings us a break in the rain, so let&#8217;s enjoy it.<\/li>\n<li>The next round of heavy rain moves in on Saturday and may bring another inch or two of rain, leading to another high water threat.<\/li>\n<li>Colder winds come in behind this by Sunday and that may mean a period of wet snow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That weekend system that may end with some snow will then be followed by a clipper looking system a few days later&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/GFS-44.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-63498\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/GFS-44.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been talking a lot about how the pattern is likely to slip back into a very wintry look starting in the second week of February as blocking develops in the high latitudes, focusing deep troughs to slide under across the US. The Ensembles and Weeklies have been showing this for a while and it fits the overall pattern.<\/p>\n<p>Now, we find the operational runs starting to see this in their longer range looks that go into the start of week two&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/GFS-2-22.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-63497\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/GFS-2-22.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"984\" height=\"808\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That kicks off a a setup that can turn pretty darn wintry across the eastern half of the country, especially.
