Your friendly weatherdude is still under the weather but I’m stopping by for an update on the pattern ahead. Our winter party gets started with a weak system arriving just as the ball drops on 2025.

This has rain and wind ahead of it for much of Tuesday into New Year’s Eve. Colder winds blow in quickly as the low scoots to our east and northeast and that brings some flurries and snow showers into town for the first day of the year.

The future radar from the Hi Res NAM shows the gusty showers arriving later tonight and the snow showers and flurries kicking in around ball drop time and continuing through New Year’s Day…

The Thursday night and Friday light snow maker is showing up better on the models as we get closer. As I’ve been saying, this is a light snowfall maker for areas of central and eastern Kentucky…

GFS

CANADIAN

This sets the stage for a potential winter storm to impact our region Sunday into early next week. The models are still figuring out what to do with the track and intensity of the low and we can expect this to continue for a few more days.

With so much energy and so much cold air available, the GFS is likely jumping the low too far north into the cold and blocking. One of the biases of the model is to put too much emphasis on the northern stream in this type of a setup…

The farther south solution is what the Canadian is seeing…

Sickness or not, I’ll be on WKYT starting at 4pm and will have another KWC update later today.
