A major winter storm is still on track to move into Kentucky Sunday and Monday. This will bring an ice storm, a snowstorm, and a combination of the two for much of the Bluegrass state.<\/p>\n<p>A Winter Storm Warning is out for much of the state with an Ice Storm Warning for a part of western Kentucky&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/GgdTBjGXgAAR7mu?format=jpg&amp;name=large\" alt=\"Image\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We will see additional counties added to the Winter Storm Warning and the new additions across the region will show up on this updating map&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/x-hv1.pivotalweather.com\/maps\/warnings\/nwshaz.us_ov.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I have no changes to my breakdown:<\/p>\n<h2>SUNDAY<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Snow, sleet and freezing rain work into western Kentucky before daybreak and this spreads eastward.<\/li>\n<li>A heavy band of heavy snow is likely to set up in an arc that lifts from southwest to northeast.<\/li>\n<li>That band has the potential to put down several inches of snow in a short amount of time. Pinpointing where this band develops is the key.<\/li>\n<li>Sleet and freezing rain take over across southern Kentucky and that slowly lifts farther to the north.<\/li>\n<li>The far south sees temps spike with rain taking over by late day.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>SUNDAY NIGHT<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Significant icing is likely into a large swath of the area as freezing rain looks fairly widespread.<\/li>\n<li>Sleet and snow will be located to the north of this into far northern Kentucky.<\/li>\n<li>Far southern Kentucky stays mainly rain.<\/li>\n<li>Winds gust up to 30mph as the low spins eastward along the Kentucky\/Tennessee border.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>MONDAY<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The day starts with freezing rain and sleet across the with light snow elsewhere.<\/li>\n<li>Strong upper-level energy spins from west to east across Kentucky through the day.<\/li>\n<li>This spawns a large swath of moderate to heavy snow for much of central and eastern Kentucky.<\/li>\n<li>Several additional inches of snow will be possible from this.<\/li>\n<li>Winds will also be gusting to 30mph at times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The amount of precipitation coming from the models is insane. If we take the GFS and melt all the precipitation down to liquid, we are seeing more than 2&#8243; of precipitation&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/GFS-7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68794\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/GFS-7.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"966\" height=\"753\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/GFS-7.png 966w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/GFS-7-300x234.png 300w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/GFS-7-768x599.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 966px) 100vw, 966px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That is off the charts and we better hope no one location stays all freezing rain or they are in a world of hurt.<\/p>\n<p>The latest GFS is coming farther south and has been doing so with each run. That&#8217;s wild.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the GFS Sleet forecast&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/GFS-3-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" better continuity with what the EURO is showing, especially in terms of snowfall&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/EURO-9.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-68803\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/EURO-9.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"964\" and this is very evident on the Freezing Rain map&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/EURO-3-5.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"
