A few weeks back, I talked about the potential for seeing the first flakes before Halloween. Mother nature delivered the goods Thursday with snow and sleet showers across much of central and eastern Kentucky. Is this any indication of what’s to come this winter?

We’ve now had October snow in Kentucky for the third straight year. The past two years produced snows that I consider “fluke” snows like what we got from Sandy. The snow of this week is a product of the pattern as opposed to a fluke setup. This is likely a good sign for snow lovers as we get closer to winter.

Speaking of getting closer to winter… the latest computer generated analog years for the start of November look like this…

I normally take the top 5 years, but two of the years were on there twice, so I expanded it to the top 7. If we go back and look at those years, November featured a pretty big trough…

That trough REALLY deepened for the following December…

There’s a lot of cold showing up from the similar years to the one the models are forecasting for November 1st. While I’m not ready to put the winter forecast together… I will say this. I will be surprised if we get through this winter without setting record lows. Lexington hasn’t had a record low during the winter since February of 1996. I think that streak ends this winter. 😉

Ok… some quick thoughts on the short term weather.

Highs today will stay in the 40s under mainly sunny skies. Saturday starts frigid with temps in the 20s and ends with some clouds increasing and temps in the low 50s.

A cold front arrives Sunday with a reinforcing shot of chill…

That front may have a few showers with it, but a lot of the area will stay dry. Highs will be closer to the 50 degree mark with an improving afternoon sky.

We will mild it up for a few days early next week before we get in on a big storm system. How this all evolves is still to be determined, but the GFS has a lot of wind and rain with crashing temps…

Whatever happens with this storm system… it should be followed by another huge blast of cold as the jet stream takes a big dip…

Have a great day and take care.

Good Friday, everyone.
