Holiday shoppers are doing their thing today and are facing another frigid one across the bluegrass state. This has been a common theme of the fall and one I fully expect to continue into the winter months.

Highs today will range from the upper 30s to low 40s under a mostly sunny sky. Saturday looks even better with readings well into the 40s with a mix of sun and clouds. Those clouds will continue to thicken up on Sunday and a late day shower will be possible as a weak front drops in.

The jet stream takes a little dip into the Tennessee Valley by Monday and that allows for temps to drop even more. Light rain will be around the region and it may be just cold enough for a bit of a mix. Here’s the GFS…

Monday’s highs may struggle to get out of the mid and upper 30s in that type of a setup.

Thermometers will eventually come up some as we head into the middle of next week. The setup will feature a bit of ridging across the southeastern states as arctic air dives into the plains and west. This is likely to crank out a big storm system in between and throw rain our way by Wednesday night and Thursday.

That will push a arctic boundary across the state by the end of next week. This system is likely to stall out just to our south next weekend as it runs into a ridge well off the southeast coast…

The area I’ve outlined may be a prime zone for significant overrunning winter precipitation from next weekend into the following week. This is a pretty strong signal for this type of a pattern setting up shop.
