I want to start out by saying thanks for making our blog such a wonderful weather community for this state. I appreciate each of you and will continue to bust my backside to give you guys the best weather information as I can. P

The actual weather today into Friday is taking a walk on the wide side. This overall pattern is one we first gave you a heads up about a few weeks back. Now that it’s here… it is certainly living up to the wild part and is the beginning phase of an early start to winter.

Let’s break down how things will progress over the next few days…

– Today is going to be windy and warm as temps spike way up. Highs will be in the 60s for most areas with 70s a good possibility for many across the south and east especially.

– The best chance for rain today will be across the west and far north.

– A strong cold front will surge in from the west this evening and will cause a wicked temp drop. Readings will drop some 30 degrees in just a few hours as the front moves through. By morning… most areas are in the mid and upper 20s. Wow!

– A wall of rain and some thunder will work eastward across the state later this evening into Tonight. The cold air will catch the rain and switch it over to a period of snow and sleet. Can it come down at a fast enough clip to give a slushy accumulation? That is possible… and I highly suspect if it does… only elevated surfaces would show a coating. The GFS continues to show this possibility…

Whatever sleet and snow does fall tonight into early Friday will be a hit and run deal with any one area only having a 2-4 hour window to see some wintry action. With the rapid drop in temps… wet roads may freeze up in a few spots Friday morning. Holiday shoppers should watch for a few slick spots.

Partly sunny skies will be noted for Friday afternoon as temps remain in the low to mid 30s for highs. Brisk winds will make it feel even colder.

Here is what you need to track the big change into town…

Current Temps

Looking ahead to next week… buckle up for more action coming from later Monday through Wednesday with another rain event early that goes over to snow. Unlike the current setup… this may have a secondary low pressure developing just to our east and southeast to throw additional moisture back into the cold air surging in here. Stay tuned.

I will have an update on the big changes blowing through later this evening so check back. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and take care.

Good Thursday and Happy Thanksgiving to one and all.
