The fast start to winter continues as we tracking another light snow system into the state later tonight and Tuesday. This is all part of a very harsh winter pattern for much of the country. I continue to see a pattern ripe with cold and snow chances through Christmas.

We have some troubles before we get to tonight’s light snow. Freezing drizzle is likely in several areas to begin the day and this may cause additional travel troubles. With temps dropping below freezing across the central and west, slow down and take it easy while driving.

Current temperatures

The next wave of moisture approaches the state quickly later tonight into early Tuesday. This will be a fast moving system that will be primarily light snow for all. How much falls depends on the speed and placement of the heaviest axis. The NAM continues to show the best chance…

The GFS is a bit more disjointed with the moisture…

I can see this putting down a couple of inches and prompting another round of Winter Weather Advisories for many. A snow map should come your way later today. Yippee.

This will be followed by an arctic front that arrives later Wednesday. The air behind this continues to show up colder and colder on the models. I see the GFS high for Lexington is now at 23 degrees for Thursday. If there’s snow on the ground… watch out out!

We have another weekend system to track and we will have to keep an eye on the phasing potential with this one. Updates on that coming later today, too.

I mentioned things beyond that were getting my attention. The pattern for next week into Christmas has a ton of potential for huge cold shots and big snow events across the country and our region. Check out the evolution of this deep trough on the European Ensembles for early next week…

That’s pretty darn wicked and a heck of a winter signal with a negatively tilted trough axis.
