We have a brutal stretch of winter weather underway here in the bluegrass state and across much of the eastern half of the country. Wicked cold temps and more snow is on tap for the next week, at least.<\/p>\n<p>Today starts out with many thermometers below zero across central and eastern Kentucky. Here&#8217;s a look at the numbers from the Kentucky mesonet sites&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today\u2019s lows<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kymesonet.org\/wxmaps\/dtmn_large.png?nowtime=1325915733\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Current temperatures<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kymesonet.org\/wxmaps\/tair_f_large.png?nowtime=1325915126\" width=\"479\" height=\"208\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Thermometers this afternoon will jump into the mid and upper teens for many. Winds will be very gusty ahead of another shot of arctic air blowing in tonight. This may produce a band of light snow as it sinks in&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/NAM7.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8882\" alt=\"NAM\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/NAM7.png\" width=\"252\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This keeps the bitterly cold air around. This could be another 1&#8243;-4&#8243; system taking shape&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/GFS27.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8884\" alt=\"GFS\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/GFS27.png\" width=\"452\" height=\"407\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/GFS27.png 452w, https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/GFS27-300x270.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 452px) 100vw, 452px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Travel on Saturday is likely to be ugly with the snow and gusty winds. Temps will drop back into the low and mid teens by the late afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Another system will swing in quickly by Sunday into Sunday night&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/GFS-218.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8885\" alt=\"GFS 2\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/GFS-218.png\" width=\"230\" height=\"163\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>That one will try to develop into something bigger than the models currently show. Regardless&#8230; it will unleash another brutal blast of cold&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/GFS-38.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8887\" alt=\"GFS 3\" src=\"https:\/\/kyweathercenter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/GFS-38.png\" width=\"231\" height=\"176\" \/><\/a>This pattern isn&#8217;t going to be going away anytime soon. It is likely to carry us into early February, at least, and could feature bigger events as we move on.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure when I can update today, but I will give it a try at some point.
