Today is going to be a rare day for this summer… a damp and cool one for most of the state. A wave of low pressure will be moving eastward across the Tennessee Valley Today this low will throw a lot of clouds into the area and these clouds will bring showers and some thunderstorms with them.

The steadiest and heaviest rains will be located primarily across the southern half of the state with more scattered stuff across the north. It is across the south where we will really need to be on guard for heavy rains that can cause some local flooding issues.

You can track the rain and storms here..

This should really be an interesting day to watch the radar to see just how far north the heaviest rains can get. To illustrate this point…look at how tight a rainfall gradient the computer models are showing for total rainfall into early Thursday…

That is one heck of a cutoff line and is usually something we see more in the winter months with snowfall. Regardless… some good rains are in store across the southern counties and we will see if these cause any problems.

The other big story today is likely to be the rain cooled air. Both the GFS and the NAM say it will be darn cool this afternoon with temps struggling into the low and mid 70s for some. Take a look at the NAM for mid afternoon today…

Some leftover showers and storms may be with us in the south early Thursday before we get in on a taste of 90 degree air to start the weekend.

I will have updates as needed today so check back.
