Good afternoon everyone. A major tornado outbreak is taking place from the deep south into the lower Ohio Valley. Several intense, long tracked tornadoes have touched down across the south causing all kinds of damage. These storms are moving northeastward toward Kentucky. A TORNADO WATCH is now in effect until 10pm for much of central and western Kentucky. This watch is given the highest priority as it is labeled as a Particularly Dangerous Situation.
Here is a look at the watch…
Current Warnings
This watch is likely the first of several more to come and these should eventually cover most of the region through the evening and overnight hours.
Damaging winds and large tornadoes will be possible.
Here are your radars to track the storms…
Most of the state is under a Moderate to HIGH risk for severe weather. Here is the latest from the Storm Prediction Center…
This is where our vast network of bloggers can come into play. Please post the weather conditions from your area as that will help all of us out in the dangerous weather situation. I will update the blog as much as I can and will likely go with a live, interactive blog at some point.
You can also follow my rapid fire updates on twitter by following me @Kentuckyweather . The twitter feed also shows up in the top right hand corner of this blog.
Take care.
All clear in Lexington right now. I suspect that will end very soon, though.
Strong storm entering Lawrenceburg right now. Lock and load boys…it’s time to roll. Here we go…
wxman, do you expect bad storms or a watch for the somerset area
Pray for the folks in MS being hit by tornadic thunderstorms… some of the video and photos look like something out of a warzone.
WXMan…your thoughts on what unfolds this afternoon in the Commonwealth? Will we see PDS type watches issues for Lexington and points south/east? From my point of view-western KY, south central KY look to be in the danger zones.
I think the Lexington area will go under a watch before midnight. However, I don’t think it will be a PDS watch. I could be wrong.
It’s the SECOND batch of storms…in the Arkansas/Mississippi/West TN area…that is expected to bring the highest tornado threat to us. That will be this evening or tonight before it gets here. It’s possible it could weaken some before then.
Yes…Pray for those poor people who have lost everything.
Moderation. Yay.
NOTHING DOING IN LEX SO FAR…LIGHT RAIN….WIND IS STARTING TO PICK UP.
The historic outbreak we expected is unfolding down there.
We’ve got consistent rain falling at a rate of 2.5 to 3.0 inches per hour here. Keep an eye out for flash flooding as well… it just keeps pouring!
Just beat the leading edge home from the Home Depot. Heavy rain, some pretty good wind gusts, and a little lightning in south Lex. Looks like they called the Blue/White game just in time.
Light to modeerate rain here since 3pm or so. Had one clap of thunder. Breezy, but that’s it for now.
Light rain in Corbin right now. I haven’t noticed any high winds as of yet. Thankfully, nothing exciting happening here at the moment. Any thoughts on what is ahead for this part of the state?
Brand new Special Weather Statement just issued by LMK. Go check it out.
After seeing what’s going on south of here, I really hate to say this, but I HOPE it stays there! I’m fascinated by severe weather but after seeing that I’m sort of freaking out a little right now.

…SEVERE WEATHER OUTBREAK INCREASINGLY LIKELY THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING…
LOW AND MID-LEVEL WINDS WILL INCREASE IN RESPONSE TO A DEEPENING
SURFACE LOW…WHICH WILL INCREASE WIND SHEAR AS WELL. AS A
RESULT…THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING…CONDITIONS WILL BECOME
FAVORABLE FOR ONE OR MORE INTENSE LINES OF STORMS AND ROTATING
SUPERCELLS THAT COULD PRODUCE TORNADOES.
THE MAIN HAZARDS FROM THESE STORMS WILL BE WIND DAMAGE…LARGE
HAIL…AND TORNADOES. HEAVY RAIN AND CLOUD-TO-GROUND LIGHTNING ARE
LIKELY AS WELL.
RESIDENTS NEED TO MONITOR LATER FORECASTS AND STATEMENTS FROM THE
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE AND LOCAL MEDIA FOR UPDATES ON THIS
DEVELOPING HAZARDOUS WEATHER SITUATION.
LMK OFFICE FOR THEIR COVERAGE AREA, INCLUDING LEX AND VICINITY
KEEP AN EYE TO THE SKY THIS EVENING…
Steady rain and thunder on the east side of Frankfort.
Steady rain here in Winchester. Winds have picked up quite a bit also.
It’s been ready pretty steady here in Georgetown for about 30 min. Seen a little lightning and heard some thunder. Get ready for the big stuff later. Batten down the hatches!!!
This might be a silly question… but is the rain we’re getting right now going to help decrease the severe weather chances later?
wx man…with all the rain here. and it cooling down in the monticello-somerset area. will that decrease our chances of strong storms
Well, not severe SO FAR, but we are having steady rain, lightning is getting brighter, and thunder is getting louder! Temp has dropped to 64 here since the rain started. Still looking ugly to the south and west.
Perhaps somewhat, but from what I have read, with all the dynamics in place and the dry air behind the front, maybe the rain cooled air will help, but still severe could happen. Let’s hope so. I want mine and everyone else’s house to be here tomorrow
Those storms developing west of Bowling Green look NASTY!
Uh, correction…..very HEAVY rain now falling here in Somerset. It is really coming down!
The rain should help cut back the potential for supercells in central and eastern KY. The dynamics of the system will still likely cause a squall line later in the evening.
A steady rain in Corbin with our fist rumble of thunder…winds seem to be calm at the moment…trying not to get lazy about watching for the severe possibilities.
the rain isnt going to cut down the wind shear and all the ingredients present with this storm system. That has been evident in mississippi. wind shear will also increase as the surface low is deepening. That is currently going on while tornado warnings are coming out for hopkinsville area
That squall line is intense back into western KY. I will not be surprised if we see lots of wind damage reports coming from it and a few tornadoes.
why no watches for jkl area, conditions are def favorable for severe weather
I agree. One of the most nasty looking squall lines I’ve seen in a long while.
Looks like the I-65 corridor will rock and roll in the next few hours. Wonder if that squall line will slide far enough NE to impact the the I-75 corridor?
Spotters reporting Tornado on the ground near the town of Pembroke in Western KY. New tornado warning just out for Logan Co.
storms expected to start moving more east that northeast now. i can start to see that on radar
I believe it will, the dynamics driving this storm are very strong.
is it me or does it look like the line looks to be still intensifying
The steady and light rain that’s been falling in Lexington is just what we needed. Finally.
The line between Owensboro and Jackson, TN looks very nasty. Could be a long night for us emergency workers.

Quick question. I fertilized my lawn the other day and noticed that the bag said do not use on specific types of grass. Do you have any idea what our grass type is? I have no clue. All I know it was sod when the house was built.
MichaelT
If you see this post, do u have any idea what type of grass we have in our subdivision. Reason I’m asking is the bag of fertilizer that I used specified to only use on certain types of grass, and gave a list of what types NOT to use it on. I have no idea what the grass type is in this subdivision. If this post shows up twice the other one said moderation so I’m trying again.

Will this moderate rain cut down chances of severe weather and tornadoes?
Guess I should have read before I asked. It appears that question has already been posed. Sorry.
This is the third time I’ve tried to post. Keeps saying moderation.
Hey guys, I made a graphic of what I think will be the track of this squall line (sorry it looks like it was rushed, because it was…)
The graphic also shows what I think the severity of the line will be as it will progress, there no key… but it is pretty self explanatory

That is a WICKED bow in the line just north of Bowling Green. Going to check some mesonet sites and see what kind of wind they are getting out of that…
The back edge of the steady rain is about through Lexington. Over the past twenty minutes it has become very gusty, in an erratic sort of way.
Most yards here are a mix of bluegrass, rye, and a fescue.
Any old bag of fertilizer works for this stuff π
bluegr@ss, rye and fescue. Any fertilizer will work.
The moderation here picks up the bad word in “gr@ss”, it’s really annoying π
Man look at that bow spin almost completely out of the main line. WOW. Could put a twister down at any second. I think it’ll slide just south of Bardstown.

Nice work from your side… have a nice time with yoru blog π
You can still see the unemployment levels are high even after a few years of the recession first hitting. I like the fact that they try to call it a double dip recession vs calling it a depression but if it goes down for travel a couple years, then goes up briefly should it “count” as wiping the slate clean…You can see the effects in the honeymoons industry as people did not have the disposable income to book cruises or other activities that cost a pretty heft entertainment fund. Same is true with global brands joining other brands such as flight center to recapture lost market share…whatever happens people need jobs or they will begin to riot…once the unemployment checks stop.
Few people know that relevant posts make the blog itself more appealing
My opinion is that this post is really good indeed
