Good Friday to one and all. Old Man Winter made an early appearance around here a week ago with some Halloween snow. Early season snowflakes can often be a fluke and not representative of the overall pattern. That is not the case this year as winter is starting early. We have arctic cold ready to engulf the country next week.

Today’s weather looks cloudy to start with a few flakes possible in the east. Most areas break out into partly sunny skies this afternoon with temps in the 40s for highs.

Another cold front moves in on Saturday and may bring a narrow band of showers with it. Winds will be very gusty and could hit 30mph at times. Temps drop from the low 50s to the mid 40s by late afternoon as colder air swings in.

Sunday looks chilly, but nice with some afternoon sunshine and a gusty wind blowing. Those winds will blow milder air in here for Monday with 60s possible for some. This air is ahead of our arctic front that sweeps in Tuesday with a band of rain and high winds. The models continue to show the possibility of the cold catching the back edge of the rain, giving us a period of flakes…

GFS 2The cold coming in behind that system is straight out of the heart of winter and it’s not just a one and done shot. Check out how the coldest anomalies from the European Ensembles hang tough for several days…

GFS TEMPS 2

As you can see, most of the country will be dealing with this arctic blast. I continue to watch the flow to see if we can get a winter system rolling underneath that sprawling arctic air mass. Several of the models have been hinting at something by the end of next week…

We will have to wait and see about that. The cold blast engulfing the country is a given, but snow chances are not. I said last weekend that I thought we would have a couple shots of snow before Thanksgiving, and I still think the same way. As always… say it with me… we shall see! 🙂

Updates come your way later today. Enjoy the day and take care.
