8am Update
Good morning gang. I wanted to chime in for a second to say that the forecast remains on course. The snows out there this morning are impressive with some totals already nearing 4″ in some areas. Winds are cranking with gusts to 35mph and this is creating blow and drifting snows.
Travel is goiing to be very tough this morning so please be careful if you are out on the roads. I did notice the 6z GFS coming in with a wiidespread 6″10″ of snow through Wednesday so I feel our forecast that is out is in fine shape. I will have updates as needed. Please keep posting the weather conditions from where you live and take care.
Good Monday everyone and welcome to a prolonged snowstorm for the entire region. The storm is now underway and will continue in various stages through Wednesday. Overall… this will lay down a significant snowfall across the state with many areas picking up the highest totals of the winter to date.
Let’s break down how things progress with this storm…
– A quick moving band of heavy snows will work through this morning across central and eastern Kentucky. This band will only last for three to five hours for many areas along and south of I-64 and a few hours longer to the north. A general 2″-4″ of snow will be likely with this band.
– There may be a lull in the snows for a time this afternoon. This should happen… especially the farther south you live. Don’t freak out when it stops snowing for a while. ![]()
– Temps today will drop rapidly from morning readings around 30 to the low and mid 20s by afternoon.
– Snow showers and snow squalls will increase rapidly this evening into the overnight. These will continue into Tuesday and Wednesday as weak disturbances dive southeastward into the area. These will enhance the snows with additional accumulations of several inches likely across the board.
– Winds will increase as well later today and continue to be gusty for the next few days. This will create blowing and drifting snows that will add to the hazardous travel conditions.
– I want to stress something here and that is this will be a PROLONGED snowstorm that will span 3 days.
You can track today’s snows right here…
How much snow am I expecting out of this ENTIRE event? Check out my latest snowfall map…
As you can see… I am pretty bullish on snow totals for the next 3 days. Again.. those are NOT totals from today but from every single flake that falls through Wednesday.
Here are some snow tracking cams…
Lexington
Harrodsburg
Richmond
Pikeville

Help us out by posting how the weather is looking where you guys live. I will have updates as needed so be sure to check back. Thanks for all you do and take care.

Thanks Chris! I can go to bed now!
Me too! I have been anxiously awaiting Chris’ update! THanks soo much!
Oh! There’s moderate snow in Versailles! Yip peeeeeeeee!
thanks Chris for the new update!
Thanks Chris for all you do!
Cynthiana has snowing falling.
31.6*
RAINING!!!!! As usual in Somerset. Temp is 34 right now. Mitch has us in the 2-3 inch range for the duration of the event I think. Based on how we’ve started out, I think he will be right unfortunately. Bring on spring if cold rain and leftovers are what we can expect.
I was looking back at that PDF file Chris Mercer linked in the blog earlier and Lexington had forty 20 plus inch winters in a century, of those, several were 30 plus and 40 plus.
Thanks Chris
Snowing pretty good in Winchester.
Grass……….covered………drivway……covered……Tahoe…….covered…….streets………clear! here in Nicholasville
Grass..covered,driveway..covered,tahoe..covered..roads……clear! in Nicholasville….wierd.. lol
Definitely one of the best winters we have had in Ky as for snowfall amounts in a very long time!
trying to tell what is going on, but being sent to moderation
what do you all mean when u say moderation?
I type something, try to send it and is says my comment went to the mysterious land of moderation lol
dud here in bowling green back edge apporaching and not much on the ground.
I know this is a “weather and Cats” blog, but I wanted to share this..I am so proud to be part of the BIG BLUE NATION, if you want to know why, follow the link… http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/kevinmassey/guestbook/41 Just proves Coach Cal is awesome and i bet 90% of the guestbook signings are from UK fans! GO CATS AND GO KEVIN!
Not gonna get much out of this first round in Jessamine. As of 3:30m, we have around 1/4 inch, temp at 33, and an almost perfect doughtnut of a dry slot directly overhead – the dome…
rain/snow mix in Knox 33 degrees
NO SCHOOL IN JESSAMINE COUNTY MONDAY!
Heavy snow in London coming down fast about a 1/4 inch in the last 20 minutes how long will it hold out who knows but sure is pretty bring it on
Carter, Elliott and Lawrence already closed today with Johnson County on a 2 hour delay waiting to see what happens I would assume.
About 1 in. on my deck in SE Lex. Just starting to stick on the streets a while ago, so travel shouldn’t be too bad as of now.
Greenup, Lewis, Rowan, Carter, Elliott, Lawrence and Martn all closed. Johnson sill on 2 hour delay.
Floyd now closed.
Madison County schools closed.
Snowing heavily atm in knox and already about half an inch of wet snow everything is covered
Let’s add Boyd County to the closed list for the day.
Anderson is out as well.
It is snowing in Lewis Co. Ky! It started about 5:00 AM.
David School in Kentucky is now closed.
Snowing in Richmond, school is closed and life is good. 🙂
1 inch in Corin……..Snowing hard…..Very wet snow….. Will the electric stay on……..
i would say yes unless it snows longer than expected
just over 1″ now in Knox co. and snowing heavily
Morning neighbor
Nearly 2 inches on the ground still heavy snow coming down
Going to be another long week.
One to two inches here on the Anderson/Mercer County Line.
Forecasted now by the NWS to receive 3-4 total for the storm. That forecast looks good.
Moderate Snow, 25 Degrees, low visibility
At least what is left this morning will be with a high ratio at 25 degrees and falling (it was 33 at 4:00 A.M.)
Woke up to a beautiful winter wonderland! Snowing huge flakes. Have 2 inches on the ground right now. No school in Laurel County.
Snowing heavily and wind blowing pretty hard……..
Wind has increased here in Madison too.
Snowing heavily in SW Lexington. Subdivision road was clear at 5:20 AM, but covered within 30 miniutes. Wind blowing, as well!
Still snowing well here, winds kicken, have not measured but eyeballed about 3 on my table on the deck. Flakes mostly very fine, but change periodically to decent size.
Thanks for hosting this site CB!
🙁 not enough yet… going to get the boy up now…
can you say blizzard ? big time wind and white out condtions atm here
Must have came down fast, since not much on ground at 2am. Hard to tell, but looks like 2″ on the ground or more. Temps must have warmed up over night as the main system moved in, but the snow rate piled it to the ground.
This probably will not be the big one, but a chance of 6″. That would be good snowman snow 🙂
Snowing heavy in Jackson County … no snow plows to be found … hwy 30 is a disaster, people in ditches … looks like already around 2-3 inches of wet snow and coming down hard!!! WHERE IS SPRING!!! (look at the 15day forcast — they are giving 60deg by the end of Feb … yippeeee)
Snowing like a screaming banshee here in downtown Winchester! Clark Co out as of 5 am. Snowing so hard I can barely see the house across the street…I had to wake my 16 yo so she could see it. Yippee!
1.3″ in Lawrenceburg, wind chill 9, wind SW 13. VERY nasty conditions outside with gusts over 20 MPH and blowing snow.
Do you think any parts of Kentucky could see thundersnow with this system?
PEPLE NEED TO LEARN HOW TO DRIVE AND THEY NOT BE IN A DITCH,
that said the sweet spot again northern half state, they stay snow all day.
Warmed up overnight as the system came in. Not much on the ground at 2am, but must have piled it on from that point on. 2-3″ in N Richmond. Looks like a good chance for 6″ total, so not a big one, but should be GREAT snowman snow! 🙂
It is snowing heavily in Menifee County. We have almost 2 inches of heavy, wet snow and it’s 31 degrees.
24 degrees and white-out conditions just south of I-64 on the Franklin/Woodford Co. line. Great job, Chris! Thanks so much for all you do!
Heavy snow here in Richmond. Visibility is greatly reduced and I can’t even see the houses across the backyard. I love it!
Decent snow coming down in Richmond, side roads are covered and not in good shape at all. Can’t see the bypass so I have no clue how that is.
EKU is now on a 2 hour delay. I find it odd that Model is not also on a 2 hour delay, but maybe they’re already out for Presidents Day?
If it stays like this, I don’t see how EKU won’t cancel classes. It’s not that we’re getting tons and tons of snow, but this is happening during the morning commute.
Snowing heavily in SW Lexington. Subdivision road was clear at 5:20 AM, but covered within 30 miniutes. Wind blowing, as well!
well i was wrong about the power the wind knocked mine out for about half hr
wait until accucrack wakes up from their dream
Rain and sleet in Martin County. Looks as if it’s trying to switch over to snow. It’s gonna be bad travel around here when the temps drop this morning.
No snow here in Pike Co.
Will we get any today
Pouring snow here just north of Hazard.
It looks like a winter wonderland.
Here in Perry Co. things started out as mostly rain overnight, but snow has been pretty steady since daylight. Less than an inch here so far.
Lexington (Hamburg Area): Snow VERY hard. Winds on my weather station are at 14-15mph. Visibility about 300 yds. It’s hard to tell because of the drifting, but it looks like we have about 3 inches already.
Snowing hard in southern Georgetown. Looks like about 2inches of new snow, but hard to measure with the wind and blowing. Stay safe today. 28 degrees here.
looks like the snow will be taking a Siesta soon in Southern KY then start back up later
Clearing skies in Clinton, & Wayne Counties. Got a bad feeling that Chris’s snow totals for this week for our area are gonna be a bit too high!
By Wednesday night for Monticello, I predict an inch or less, but i’m wishing for more.
Clay’s Ferry 25.6* and 85 humidity and blowing fairly steadily. Just a touch under 3″ in the lee of the wind; not drifting, yet, just recirculating snow. Looks like a casting call for Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds” at the feeders!! This is going to be FUN!
I have a friend that just called me on her way to work. Said she is going to turn around at exit 95 (I-75) and come back to Richmond. She said she was sliding. She mentioned that she was doing about 20-25pmh along with a long line of other cars, but there were some cars zipping past her doing 50+. *saying bad words right now*
It’s stopped snowing here in Middlesboro for now. The winds are beginning to blow. The current temp is around 29 with about 2 inches of snow. Stay safe everyone.
Snowing hard in LEX. Road conditions are hazardous!!! Main roads are not clear. I have never seen New Circle Rd. not clear for the morning commute. Not a knock on the road crews – the snow just came at a bad time. Temps have dropped in the last hour from 32 to 24.
Note to crazy drivers in Lexington: Just because you have 4-wheel drive or a big truck does not mean you should drive 50-60 mph in these conditions. The roads right now warrant MAYBE 20-30 mph. SLOW DOWN!!!
lol …. 20-25pmh … I mean mph. :-)2 hours of sleep.
Well what was wet snow on the ground has frozen and now is the consistency of ice
22 degrees in frankfort, it was 33 when i woke up at 6:15. 3.5 Inches on the ground and still falling! remember guys this isnt the only part of this prolonged snow storm 🙂
Here between Williamsburg and Corbin, still snowinging pretty good, wind seriously gusty. I measure between 2-3″ on the ground.
Snowing hard in Clay County.1-2 inches in northern Clay County. I didn’t think we were going to get the snow. I woke up around 3:00 am and nothing was on the ground. It is a different story out their now. The wind is gusting and you have snow blowing around. It is a very wet snow. It is laying on the power lines. Let hope the electricity stays on. Chris thanks for the updates. You are the best and so is this blog.
Moderate to heavy snow in Mason Co. About 2 inches of new accumulation at this time; 32*.
All Wheel Drive – Traction Control – Advanced Braking Systems.
Quit holding up traffic!
I doubt it. But as far as road conditions go…this is the worst I’ve seen it here in a LONG time.
Love the snow!
about 2.5 inches in Morgan County (West Liberty)-big fluffy snow piling up fast, still moderately heavy snow coming down
Snow is heavy here in morgan co the flakes are huge….
roads and interstate in lexington are pretty much worthless and slick. Had to take a snow day because someone doesn’t take the weather seriously and doesn’t want to spend the money to treat the interstate. With 2 inches on the ground, I should be able to get to my job in Frankfort. I don’t know how they expect the economy to get better when they don’t want to take care of the roads so people can get to work.
From local news…
“Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials call these “the worst travel conditions of the year”.
As moderate to heavy snow continues to fall, road conditions have quickly deteriorated.
Areas around central Kentucky are reporting upwards of three inches of snow. At 5 a.m., most main thoroughfares were just wet, but as the snow picked up, roads quickly became snow covered, slick and hazardous.
Officials in Lexington closed Landsdowne Road near Reynolds due to slippery conditions.
Interstates are snow covered and traffic is moving slowly.
Officials advise area residents stay off roadways unless travel is absolutely necessary.”
-END
here on my mini “Mt. Everest”…LOL..as my wife calls it.. we have gusty winds,26*,and about 2” of snow on the ground. As Andy mentioned the slushy wet, snow has become hard, crunchy ICE!!!..
southern Ky. is on the edge of the snow rotating around to the North. But more is building in from the SW. and will rotate in by afternoon.
Now if we can just keep the sun from peeking through and melting what we got now…
WHAT AM I SAYING!!!, I’M NEVER GONNA GET MY HOUSE MOVED…LOL…LOL…
Ya worst conditions of the year because they didn’t salt, brine or do anything last night! If Alaska and the north east can handle feet of snow every year then KY should be able to handle a couple inches.
US 60 in Woodford County on the way to Lexington very hazardous. Wet snow from the early morning has frozen to a layer of ice underneath the new snow. Cannot recommend travel unless it’s a must.
Ya it’s the worst of the year because someone didn’t pay attention to the weather and salt, brine or send out the snow plow drivers until within the last hour! If Alaska and Canada can handle feet of snow every year then there is no reason KY can’t handle a couple inches.
I live in Floyds Knobs, IN which is across the river from Louisville and we have almost 6 inches on the ground on top of the 4 inches that remained from last weeks storm… Love, love, love this stuff… Thank you weather gods….
you not in town today ?
Have all of the above, but don’t find it necessary to put other’s lives at risk just so I can get where I’m going a whole 3 minutes ahead of them!
Holding up traffic? That would be you when you are in an accident and close down the road.
From a distance, I looked out the window and got excited…thinking it was beginning to snow. Taking a closer look…DISAPPOINTMENT! It was only the smoke passing by from the neighbor’s chimney. 🙁
Tabitha –
No offense, but the road crews are out there IN FORCE treating as quickly as they can (and have been). The issue is that the snow came right at rush hour and therefore difficult to keep-up with the falling snow. 2-3 inches in 2 hours is alot of snow.
It is amazing to me that we expect the roads to be perfect when getting so much snow in such short-order. Give them some time, they will get them clear.
Moderate to heavy snow in Maysville…roads are becoming very hazardous…Mason County under a level 2 snow emergency.
That’s because people in Alaska and Canada don’t gripe about 3 inches of snow. They don’t clear the roads up there any better. The people just deal with it and don’t give it a 2nd thought.
I grew up in Wisconsin. My brother still lives up there. They had 16 inches of snow last week and a small earthquake. Guess what? Schools never closed. They’re used to it (excpet the earthquake).
I am having a hard time viewing the updated snowfall map. Could someone let me know what is the current amounts that we are looking at in the Morehead/Rowan County area?
Are we going to get some sunshine with the dry slot? It’s getting much brighter outside.
From a distance, I thought it was snowing as I looked out the window. To my disappointment, though, it was the next door neighbor’s smoke from the chimney passing by laughing at me. 🙁
no staying with the inlaws, so we can be here while they are working on the land up here, and with the weather the way it is, IM NEVER GONNA GET OFFICIALLY MOVED!!…lol…but oh well its just getting closer and closer to spring! IF WE HAVE A SPRING!!
We have 3 or more right now and it is still coming down heavy. What do you do when they plow your road and they throw all the snow in your driveway Zees good thing i don’t need to go any where i could not get my car out.lol
It is snowing it’s butt off here in Morehead with probably at least 3 inches down and no signs of letting up. Looks like a blizzard out there with the wind blowing the way it is. Heaviest snow we’ve seen all year right now.
give us a yell if you need us i will be going to Binghams about 12
Paul, are the roads in Wisconsin straight and flat, or extremely curvy and hilly?
I love waking up with snow flying! I just shaved thirty years off my age! I am going to play outside!!!! Thanks Chris for being the best ever!
Where’s my FEMA trailer? Where’s my FEMA debit card? Oh, woe is me.
LOL. This must be George Bush’s fault somehow.
It has Morehead in the 4-8. I all ready have 6 or 7 in my driveway thinks to that snowplow….
The snow has stopped and the sun is shining her in N.W. Mercer county near Cornishville. I am guessing we have between 2 and 3 inches on the ground. It is gorgeous outside!
So far in SE Ky–at least the parts of SW Pike Co and eastern Letcher Co–the majority of precipitation has been rain with some snow mixed in. A few areas above 2500 feet have seen some accumulation, and we have some reports of a switch over to snow in the Cumberland area.
Personally, I’m just about ready to drive south until I see palm trees. Someone play “Boat Drinks” by Jimmy Buffett for me!
I guess more like W. Mercer county. Not N. West. Oops!
Cold rain in Pikeville.
Heavy snow again in London really coming down hard, wind is unreal and 22 degrees.I have been watching 18 Tom seems to think only about 3 inches for us heck we almost already have that but the radar does show a huge clearing headed this way. I hope Chris’s forecast holds up.
My question: Where’s your brain.
I really hate this snow because now you won’t soon be able to get a flight back to Colorado.
In a post in another thread you were busy insulting people and calling them ignorant while at the same time you demonstrated that you didn’t know the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re’.
Many of us ‘ignorant hillbillies’ on welfare know that difference. Colorado must produce some real mental defectives.
Paul…. the terrain in eastern ky is horrible…love to see your brother drive in eastern kentucky during a snow storm…lol
Still snowing in Frankfort. The roads looked untouched during this morning’s commute (around 7). I’m not sure if the trucks weren’t able to get everywhere or if the snow was falling too fast, but I was traveling Highways 60 and 460 and nearly didn’t make it OUT of downtown Frankfort.
Snowing like CRAZY here in NW Harrison! Probably close to 3-4 inches on the ground, but it’s hard to tell with it blowing around!
It’s still coming down in Clay County. It’s beautiful here. The trees are covered, and it’s still snowing!!! Love the Weather!! The kids are so excited!!
Don’t even get me started. The salt crews are one of the reasons your economy is so bad. We spend $30 million per year just to treat the roads around here. It’s ridiculous how they hit the roads every time a flake falls. If you can’t get to work, perhaps you should sell your car and buy an SUV.
Here you go I am in the same boat as you rain.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mw4xI4xkeyo
bummer for u all in pikeville, u get it on next round today as temps fall.
Amen. People here are spoiled sissies. With 2″ on the ground, we shouldn’t even have to use salt trucks at all and SAVE our taxpayers’ money for more important things. Instead, you have Moms whining about it so we are blowing cash like mad to fight every little flake.
Did you guys even read my post? That’s not the point. My point is that they don’t clear roads any better, the people are just used to it.
Shifting to you’re line of thinking… What about Alaska, Montana, Colorado, etc. Do they somehow magically clear of the roads in those remote parts everytime it snows a couple of inches? They have bigger mountains. I’m just saying those people are used to the snow and they deal with it. It’s not a big drama if the road hasn’t been cleared.
is there really another lincoln on this blog, or is someone impersonating me? lol
It was the same thing here in Georgetown. We left Sadieville around 6:45 and Hwy 25and I-75 was horrible. I looked untouched. It’s still coming down hard here in Gtown…beautiful to look at…bad to travel on. Stay home people if you don’t have to get out.
Mr.Rolo, How much snow has fallen in your area this lovely morning? Haha.
Major mess in my part of eastern Bourbon County. We have at least five inches on the ground and the wind is creating huge drifts. Our lower driveway is once again a wall of snow. Hubby had to give up on trying to get to work today. The plows can’t keep up with the wind out here on the ridge. Nasty day so far!!
ok…I meant “it” looked untouched but I’m sure I didn’t look too good either after walking through the blizzard we were having…lol
Light snow falling in Georgetown with peaks of sun coming through the clouds. We have 3-4 inches of snow on the ground. Roads are covered and the winds are awful!! Be careful if you’re on the road.
Sun is out in full force in Corbin – it will melt off the half inch we recieved from the busted first half of the storm. Co grays so far to north and central KY snowlovers.
Haven’t been out to measure yet, but looks like a good 2″ so far. We never got rain here…all snow 🙂 Ready for the next round to come through. I need a bit more to make my snow cream :p
WXman what’s cash when lives are at stake I’m sorry WXman because i really don’t want to fight with you but I’m a mother and my kids are more inportant than any money they can spend to keep our road clean…….
Amy…FYI they treated AFTER the fact instead of before like they did the previous week. If you went to work like the rest of us do then maybe you would understand why it is important to keep the roads clear. Some people have mortgages and bills to pay for and whether it’s 2 inches or 20 inches, the road crews need to ensure the roads are treated AHEAD of time. Not after.
3″ in NW LEX and the sun is out shining. Shoveled off the driveway… ready for the next bit of snow.
Mitch… you didn’t really expect snow in Bowling Green did you? Are you just messing with us?
Where are you located, Les? I have more tha half and inch. I am in central-north Corbin.
I love reading your comments because y ou are so knowledgable about the weather, and I see your point about spending so much money on treating the roads…however don’t get me started about the money wasted in this state/country…I work in healthcare, enough said…you say we are spoiled, I say cautious. I would never want any child to be on a bus with the roads like they are today…I live in Northern Scott Co. now, I am from SE KY.
Lives are not at stake.
no sun here, in southern knox co. YET, but I have noticed alot of breaks in the clouds on the satellite loops.. Still flurrying here.
Sorry for the typo. I meant half inch.
no snow here, 34* and rain ugh!
will we ever see snow???????
How much do you have so far, Tim?
Busted again. I do not see how the Richmond area will end up with at least 4 inches as predicted. This does not seem possible. It is so disappointing not to get a big snow. Bring on spring…lets go fishing…this stuff is no fun at all.
If they do not salt the roads and keep them clean how is lives not at stake when you are out there on slick roads….
Would you rather have your taxpayer dollars “blown” on salting the roads or building a couple rain gardens in downtown Lexington like Mayor Newberry is doing??
lincoln got little over 2 inxhes here.
Guys, have faith…CB keeps stressing the fact that this is gonna be a drawn out snow event. We’ll get our snow, think positively 🙂
Huge cutoff in Eastern KY. I live about 4 miles NW of Prestonsburg and had around an inch when I left for work this morning. Got to Prestonsburg and nothing was on the ground and it was raining. In a matter of 4 miles, it went from heavy snow and an inch to nothing but rain.
dude- did you see this part of CB’s post:
– I want to stress something here and that is this will be a PROLONGED snowstorm that will span 3 days.
Latest statement from NWS Jackson:

Here in carter county it is a blizzard! It is snowing really hard, big flakes & the wind is blowing it around like crazy. The roads are horrible & I’d say we got a good 3″ on the ground, if not more..With more coming through wednesday, I’d say chris was spot on with his forecast..
You dont have to get out on the roads, if the roads are to bad for you to drive on. There wont be school. So basically it is a waste of money.
With snow blowing, hard to tell what we have ATM, but my guess is over three inches in north Richmond. This will not be a “big snow”, but if we get 6″, it will be perfect for snowman making! 🙂
Wow you people are being total jack—es to Tabitha. Your comments were completely uncalled for. Disgareement is fine, but you took it too far.
why are we all fighting about salting roads, haha. I think we all just need to get in out birthday suit and go outside and play in the snow! hahahahahahahahah But not to long may get frostbite in places you never want it 😉
LOL.
Are you really going to use the word “many”? Come on. That’s your rebuttal? Do you even read the posts? “Many” people, on here, can’t even use proper capitalization or puncutation. “Many” people, on here, can barely put a sentence together. Do you really expect that “many” know the difference between ‘your’ and ‘you’re’?
By the way, there should be a question mark, not a period, after your question, in the first line of your post. Nice demonstration.
dude, its a website. If peoples feelings get hurt through text they have issues.
What about people who have to work my daughter can’t call in and say wait its snow so i can’t come in today I’m done with this Chris has enough trouble on here with comments…..
Sun shining brightly in Wilmore now. Blowing and drifting quite a bit. I estimate 2-3 inches of new snow on top of what we had left from last week. Eagerly anticipating the next round which seems to be building in from the west in the next few hours. Temp dropped from 33 this morning to 22 in just a short while when the first main band came through!
Very hard to get an accurate measurement of snow due to the crazy blowing and drifting, but Garrard appears to have about 2 inches from my best guess.
Awesome. I love a good whiteout!
John –
Yes, actually I was at work in Lexington at 7:45am. Thank you! I have a mortgage and bills to pay, too (not sure what that has to do with the topic!).
And the road crews were out BEFOREHAND, actually as early as yesterday because I saw them, with my own little eyes!!!
Folks, you need to calm down a bit and stop with the personal attacks (“if you went to work like the rest of us”, you don’t even know me?!?!). This is merely discussion/debate and bringing up other points of view. Let’s not attack people. Good gracious!!
Snow is over for now here in LEX; sun is even shining! Anyone have total accum. for Lex so far?
forecast was for a couple of inches mine was 2-3 nws had 3-5 yeasturday afternoon for bowling green the track of the 850 mb low did us in allowing for a surge of waa last night looks like a little over an inch on the ground with snow still falling.
I haven’t seen anything official, but we’re at 3″ here in masterson station area and that’s near the airport so I’d expect to see the official number near that.
its going get funky like a monkey here after while, as u can see it getting ready to fill in this afternoon. I see some 1-2 inch per hour rates in some of the heavier banding.
0 inches and counting!
Good morning from the coalfields — no snow on the ground. It is a little windy.
the nws forecast last night was for 3-5 inches here by the end of the today mine was 2-3. Looks like a little over an inch here with snow showers still falling. the track of 500 mb low north of bowling green did us in. Overall though this is the snowiest winter since 1985 for Bowling Green, acutally getting more than lexington for the last two storms, guess it’s time to share.
We only have a dusting in Harlan at the moment. I am actually surprised they called off school. I guess they did because of what is coming!!!
Apparently Jessamine is no longer in a WSW, but a WWA for only 1-3 total accumulation (although we’ve already had 2-4), while Fayette is still in a WSW for 4-6 inches. This according to the map issued by LMK at 9:30 am. Not sure what that is all about…
Almost 2 inches here at the Johnson/Floyd line. My friend who lives at Auxier just called and said it is just now starting
to snow over there…about 8 miles away!
you are one to talk. get rid of your attitude. people are entitiled to their opinions but you keep attacking them
Well given that choice, I’d want the salt. But there are other choices too.
Love it! Now, if we can get another 3″, I will be a (really) happy-camper. I just wanted one 6″ snowfall this year!!!
Lexi –
You are right. I’ve done nothing but attack people on here all morning. Thanks for setting me straight.
Have a great day and enjoy all this wonderful SNOW!!!
My parents lived in Cornishville when I was born. I bet it is beautiful there in the snow. My Dad is buried at the Christian Church there. He loved the snow too! I guess my love if snow is inherited from him.
It is beautiful here in Clay Co. The sun is shining through the trees, which makes the snow so pretty. Now waiting on the next round of snow. Does anyone know what time the second around for Southeastern KY is going to start? We have about 2 inches on the ground. I hope we get at least another 4.
It seems that Corbin got less snow than Laurel county. I’m about 4 mile south of London, and easily have around 3″ of snow on the ground, with much deeper drifts around ditches and low spots.
I’m about 10 Miles NorthWest of you (across the KY river) on the Anderson/Mercer Line. 3 inches, sun was out, but snow starting to pick up in intensity. Looks to be really banding to the West and building back up. Dry slot only looks to last a few hours..not bad!
Yeah, the dry slot only lasted about 2 hours or so, and now the clouds are streaming back in and the snow is starting again. I sure hope CB’s forecast verifies, and would absolutely love it if we got the high end!
WARNING>>>WARNING>>>>Road conditions on the Natcher Parkway are HORRIBLE……!!!!!20 mile stretch from Ohio county going to work in Owensboro 4 wrecks!!!!!!Stay off the roads unless you absolutely have to go somewhere!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Boyle County- 3 miles NE of Danville.. Impossible to get a measurement because of blowing. Estimate 1-2 on ground. 29*
Note: Just because there is a forcast for “x” number of inches does not mean you will have that much on the ground at any one time.
Morehead State’s Main campus will be closing at 2:00p.m.
Madison County – N. Berea
Looks to be about 2″ unmeasured and drifting snow, sun is out and temp is at 28.9.
I like gardens, they look nice.
Absolutely no snow at all. Check out the Pikeville cam.
I think that might have been a glitch as far as dropping Jessamine out of the WSW. According to LMK NOAA website, we are still under the WSW:
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/lmk/
Over on Gordon Hill.
Bourbon county got a good 5 plus out of the first batch, at least where I live did. Large drifts form even after roads plowed. Radar indicates another good shot coming around noon or 1 pm, tomorrow is a snow day if you know what I mean.
I’ve got 2.5 inches in Corbin now.
I can’t get an accurate reading b/c of all the blowing and drifitng, but Im guessing about 2-3in in Southern Jessamine Co. Sun was out for awhile, but clouds are filling back in and flakes are starting up again. Let ‘er RIP!!!
Blog got a little heated this morning I see. I drove from Nicholasville to Lex at 10am, and roads were wet with a little slush, but overall, pretty clear. Subdivision was snow covered and icy, but if you have any driving skills at all, it shouldnt have been a problem for anyone, at least in this area IMO.
Think some need to switch to DECAF
About 2 1/2 to 3 inches of new snow on the ground from the first batch here in Anderson County.
I live out in Boyd County. It’s been snowing pretty good. I live on the top of a very big hill and the winds are howling and blowing snow everywhere.
We can’t even balance our budget. We might not have money to pay teachers. We will have to reduce services to you taxpayers. Our state is in horrible financial condition…yet you want them to blow $30 million to fight off every snowflake that hits the ground? Wake up people. It’s a complete waste of money. We don’t live in Siberia. If you have to get out, sell your car. I had NO trouble getting to work at all this morning. Otherwise, stay home. It’s Kentucky…it’ll be gone in 48 hours.
She took it too far by attacking road workers. She needed to be set straight. Sorry.
Unless she attacks you then lay off. And whether or not this is a website does not make it any more acceptable to lay into someone for their opinions. Get off the self-righteous kick.
SO TRUE…LOL
patty,
It is absolutely gorgeous! All the trees are snow covered. It’s like a winter wonderland!
howdy fellow bloggers 4-5 new inches in ft thomas and its coming down good!!! nku closed today! hope we all get some nice totals.
Boyle County- 30* Sun, clouds, snow.
http://stormtracker.yolasite.com/
The temperature is down to 29 degrees in Menifee County with flurries and about 3 inches of snow on the ground. The wind is really blowing and we have some sun peaking through!
John,
This is a weather blog. If you have complaints about the road conditions, might I suggest that you contact the highway department in your city or county. You will probably have your complaints better addressed by the individuals who are responsible for clearing the roadways. The people on this blog are in no way responsible for clearing the roads you travel on.
The truth is, if one publicly expresses an opinion, then they open themselves for others’ comments. They should not get their feelings hurt when that happens. It’s true not only for the Internet, but for all forms of communication.
In order for us to get the 6-10 in. in Harlan Co., we need another 6-10 in. LOL I know this is supposed to be through Wednesday AM, but when should we experience the bad conditions? Not that I really want them, I just do not want to be out and about and get caught in them!
Will we ever get back to school in carter county? I don’t even think I can remember all my students names anymore.
Awesome! I’m going to drive over there to see for myself!
We have about 4 inches and have hit the lull. Getting ready for the next round.
FYI while posting on a blog, I don’t believe capitalization is all that important! Don’t come on a blog for people in Ky if you are going to act like that.
Probably a few waves like that before it is all done. Wrap around action.
Well here in the beautiful Lake Cumberland area, we probably have about 2 inches. Also blowing around. Starting to snow again, after a brief break. DID see the sun…for about 2 minutes.
Temps dropped this morning in a hurry, as it was 32 when I got up at 6:40, and by 7:05, it was 25. Wind chill is 10 at the moment, andwe suddenly have a blizzard and white out conditions here.
About 2 1/2 to 3 inches of new snow on the ground from the first batch here in Anderson County.
Let’s play a game! See who the first person is that posts they have “3.5” 🙂
I love when people post in decimal values with drifting snow 😉
temp at 22!
I need your help, please. I am scheduled for an important doctor’s appointment in Louisville today at 1:30 pm. The travel conditions has me scared to death! Do you think that I need to reschedule or have things settled down enough for me to try?
I am driving myself crazy here, trying to decide what to do, so I decided to ask those who know best! 🙂 I SINCERELY appreciate your thoughts and help. Thank you! Be safe, everyone!
barely anything on the ground in Johnson County at noon
wkrc says 7-11 inches by the am tommorow!!!!
Light snow in Pikeville nothing sticking to the ground.
Snow has really picked up in intensity on the Anderson/Mercer County Line. Traffic on 127 has slowed down (there hasn’t been much today).
I agree with WXman that the roads are as bad as they have been in a while around here. My wife drove to Lawrenceburg just a few minutes ago and 127 is even bad in spots. All side roads are slick.
Snow has moved back in in a BIG way here in S. Jessamine! Heavy snow and blowing snow at the moment! Bring it on and on and on!
Sun shining in Harlan Co. now. We have a dusting, and that is it. We are going to have to have some wicked snow this afternoon to get 6-10 in.
WE are in the middle of a very intense snow squall right now. It has probably put down near a quarter inch in the past 20 minutes or so. Funny thing is, when I pull up the radar, it is not showing up on it.
Chris, would gur=ess that we have probably 2 inches on the ground here right now. IT is blowing around, and temp is down to 23 with wind chill of 11 right now. It is absolutely beautiful outside! Haven’t seen it snow this hard in a long time! Hope it keeps it up.
Plows are out on the roads, but it is coming down so fast, they can’t keep up with it.
I see a few more counties have been added to the WARNINGS in JKL area , Rockcastle, and Jackson counties are included in this.
Alot of reports of over 3″ north of the Hal Rogers Parkway. down here in southern ky. right around 2″ or maybe a bit more, with sun in and out and on and off snowshowers…Now lets see what the wrap around brings..
Louisville area reporting 6-7″..
Oh this is horrible. No snow on the ground, none falling, but we had a little rain this morning. It looks like everyone got it wrong this go around, maybe next time.
“I don’t believe capitalization is all that important!”
…That proves my point! Thank You.
Sunshine and dry air is being annoyingly stubborn here in Lexington. Bring on the next batch.
This just in- UK has canceled all classes beginning at 5PM and later.
classes starting at 5 or later at UK are canceled
announcement from UK
http://www.uky.edu
no class after 5
Same here…coming down at a clip equal to this morning on the Mercer/Anderson County Line. New acculumlation of about half an inch or so, hard to tell with blowing and drifting
We have blowing snow right now in Georgetown. Where is this next round of snow at? Waiting impatiently. Sun is peaking out from the clouds. Hoping for another few inches out of next system.
UK just canceled evening classes after 5pm. Most everyone on campus here is very upset with the Admin because as of sunrise very, very few of the paths were cleared (or even touched) and a real good concerted effort didn’t seem apparent til at least 9am. Between that, the wind, the heavy snow, and the bitter cold… it made for many unpleasant pedestrians.
If you’re not going to bother to clear the paths, cancel classes! It’s not a difficult concept.
It looks like the northern turn has effected the snow here in Pike County. Unless the upslope really kicks in later, I am not seeing the 4-10 the snow map is calling for happening. The sad thing is, they cancelled school again today, and there is nothing on the ground!
Sunny and windy here in Harlan County. very Very light dusting. 6-10…… we will have to see the most intense upslope event I have ever witnessed in order to get at least six inches.
Snowlover and everyone from Rowan County check this out…
http://wxcaster.com/gis-gfs-snow-overlays.php3?STATIONID=JKL
Sitting in the parking lot off Palumbo Dr and it’s snowing moderately. Sunshine is GONE!
That is a crazy turn. Thought your area would get the wrap around for sure.
You spelled punctuation incorrectly.
That looks awesome for the Lexington area as well. I just don’t see how we are going to get that. It seems the low on radar is headed northeast now and the snow that was building west doesn’t look as put together.
I guess maybe part 2 will get us to that total?
Not here in masterson station area. Blue sky and serious melting going on.
Blowing snow is hard to peg it, but we must be nearing four inches now. Not sure how a bust and I am in Richmond too. Seems we will hit 6″ by Wednesday- if it stays cold of course and minimum sun.
We have about 2 inches in Clay County right now!!
I bet the sunshine in Lexington gave the road crews a much needed boost.
WXman I agree with you on part of that our state is in bad shape right now but they need to stop spending on some other thing that are not so inportant,WXman you have to admit maybe you could have made that comment a little nicer….
THIS IS JUST FOR THOUGHT AS IT IS 300+ HOURS OUT ON THE GFS LONGRANGE BUT TAKE A LOOK AT THIS (LOOK FAMILIAR 93′)…
http://wxcaster4.com/gfs/CONUS_2P5GFS_1000-500_SLPPRPTHK_360HR.gif
For the past 2 – 3 hours central ky aka the dome looks like its been in the eye of a hurricane.
That map has paart of Pike County in 6-8 and the oother part 8-10. I know CB has said it will be a prolonged event, lasting until Wednesday, but are there really that much moisture working with this system, that I can’t see in the radar?? It looks as though it is mostly passed by Pike County area. So I am really having a hard time seeing that much snow fall in our area. It may completely prove me wrong.
4 inches and heavy snow here in Rockcastle county. I am glad the NWS put us in the WSW after we received 4 inches.
My temp is at 29* and snow fluuries with around 2 1/2 inches on the ground! It is a pretty snow as the trees are drooping so it must be.Have not been out as scanner says state police are asking everyone to stay off roads unless you just have to be out.I hope everyone stays safe and warm today!
Should I still expect snow in Harlan County? Just curious!!!
I meant to say the snow must be heavy!sorry 🙂
sorry about the repeat posts- first couple went to moderation LOL
Pouring the snow in Winchester right now. 22 degrees.
Exactly! You are the only one to notice. You must not be from the mountains.
WELL WELL WELL
I’m finally catching up on all the comments on the blog today! No clue how much snow we have in NW Lex……….blowing around too hard!
OH and Susteen…….Why such a bitter little troll? Just sayin’
In Paintsville, we probably have around an inch and a half and the sun is starting to peek out. Seems to be melting some so I am wondering if we will get what is forcasted. Any thoughts?
light snow in berea looks to be moving back in. was out this morning and roads were terrible. 25 is clear for the time being.. ready for more:)
Are they out again tomorrow?
In my area of Louisville, eastern part, it’s somewhat tough to tell how much snow has fallen. Looks to be 4-5 inches, but there is a lot of blowing and drifting.
The radar returns have begun to fill in back to the west so it appears several more hours of light snow will continue. I would say about 8-10 inches is on the ground in my neighborhood.
I live on the Jefferson Co./Oldham Co. line in NE Louisville. We officially have 7″ of fresh new snow on the ground. With the 4″ that were leftover from the past storm, we have 11″ of snow. The best part is it’s still snowing and the radar seems to be filling back in to the west of us as the backbanding pushes through. Right now it’s still coming down at a very nice clip here. Great forecasting Chris and now it’s off to the next storm this w/k end! What a winter: 30″ total now for the year with more to come!
getting HAMMERED here in nky rates of about 1 inch per hour!!! ruler has dissapeared AGAIN!!!
Abby, I think we will get more in the second wave. CB said not to worry, it’s supposed to stop snowing for awhile.
Must be nice! We lack about 6-10 in. of having 6-10 in. in Harlan County!!!
Same thing here..don’t have a ruler out, but this backside snow has come on with some power. In the 20 degree air, it doesn’t take much moisture to squeeze out a good amount.
You are a real jerk. I contacted Chris and let him know about you in particular. And yes capitalization is important but this is a blog. Many times I post on my phone and don’t have time to write everything out. So get over yourself.
An inch…maybe a shade more is all we have in Monticello, & the sun is threatening to take that away this afternoon. Unless something changes, we’re not gonna get close to that 4″ forecast map Chris has. Wish some other areas could share with us!
Snowing…….blowing…….powder all over the place looking outside my window. 21 degrees. Big fat flakes …..Now I sit and wait for HVAC…..since it’s NOT hard to stop a TRANE!
Hopefully it’s just the electric fan motor in the outdoor unit or the capacitor. It’s not likely the compressor would be bad with the age of your house.
New post is up.
I feel your pain! I go to MSU and this morning was beyond ridiculous. White out conditions and you couldn’t see the lines on the roads. Every sidewalk was covered and not a soul was out clearing walking paths or the roads for that matter. They then decide to cancel classes after 12pm after the snow has stopped. Makes no sense.
Whew! Finally caught up with the blog. Looks like some people got up on the wrong side of the bed. I’ve got an easy 4 inches in my sheltered yard here in downtown Winchester, measured in several places. Sun was blinding me at 11, now snowing lightly but wind is strong and gusty.
I want to say that the road crews here in Winchester and the county have worked like maniacs preparing for this event. Brine trucks hit the roads Friday late and did a great job covering our area. It’s just the luck that snow began here at 5:30 am and we had white out conditions at 8 am. That brine is not magic stuff, and plows can’t be everywhere at once. Thanks, road guys, for hanging with it! 🙂
