Good Friday everyone and welcome to the weekend. The weather pattern is about ready to get cranked up once again as we go back toward a very stormy look over the next week and change. Then it is likely to become game on for one heck of a cold and snowy second half of winter.

The active pattern is actually getting started today with a lot of clouds and a few light showers making their way across the region. We have a very weak front moving through and has just enough juice for some precip. I cannot totally rule out a wet snowflake later tonight. Track the showers here…

A few of these light showers will hang around into the start of Saturday. Highs today will range from the upper 30s to low 40s and will likely be there again on Saturday.

A nice sized low pressure system will move from the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday to just to our southeast by Sunday. I look at the track of this storm and just shake my head because we don’t have a cold high pressure to the north to give us cold air for a big snow. That is THE only thing lacking. Instead… we are left with what should be a cold rain that can be locally heavy at times in the east. That said… i simply cannot rule out something frozen at the start on Sunday morning then again Sunday night. We will also have to really keep an eye on the highest elevations because I have seen systems like this before produce snow.  Just look at what a perfect track on the GFS…

The track alone says the highest mountains can pick up some good snows and we will be watching to see if that is the case.

The pattern next week was supposed to be a much milder one that sees winter go away for good according to some. Well… that is not going to happen and if next week is a “break” for the country… I hate to see what happens once the “break” is over.

We will be seeing the arctic cold building in Canada once again as our southern branch of the jet stream comes to life with a parade of storms working almost due east across the country. You can see that pattern here on the Canadian Model…

That is for NEXT weekend. A parade of storms with 1052mb highs showing up in Canada! Let’s see if we can get those two together for some real fun. I have made no bones about where I think the rest of winter is going. The signs continue to point toward the end of January into February having the potential to be memorable for much of the country.

Enjoy the “break”!

On a side note… I am going to start policing the comments section a little harder and will smack around those causing trouble. Offensive comments will not be tolerated here nor will political comments. We are a weather blog and if you want to discuss controversial topics… this is not the place for you and I will make sure of that! We can do it the easy way or the hard way. Personally, I prefer the hard way because that’s more my style. Either way… I have no tolerance for offensive behavior and will be watching.

Check back for updates through the weekend. Have a great Friday and take care.
