Good Monday to one and all. We have another light snow maker that will be rolling into the area later today and this is likely to put down a quick inch or two from this evening into early Tuesday. This will only add to our consecutive stretch of days of cold and snow that now stands at 10. The streak will likely hit 12 before we begin to switch the pattern around for a bit.
Light snows will break out from northwest to southeast this afternoon into the evening as a fast moving system swoops in. This does not have a ton of moisture to work with as you can see from the GFS…
This Evening
Tuesday Morning
Still… it can snow pretty good for a couple of hours before snow showers and flurries kick in for later tonight and Tuesday. Roads will likely become slick as the snows move in. Again… an inch or two at most out of this. You can track the snows in to the area with regional radar…
Some notes from beyond Tuesday…
– Wednesday will see a recovery of temps that should take us above freezing for the first time since New Year’s Eve. Sunshine will return as well.
-. Highs by Thursday and Friday will climb toward 40 as we melt some snow!
– The storm across the Gulf will have to be watched closely for the weekend as it can bring a nasty mix or rain, snow and ice our way. It is way to early to tell on this one and the models will struggle big time as the storm is cut off from the main flow!
– The overall cold and snowy pattern relaxes after this weekend. This means the 2nd half of January looks more “normal” .
– Signs are already showing up that the end of the month into February may go back to where we have been over the past few weeks.
– I am already looking long range to spring and summer. If you like heat… you may not like what I am finding right now.
I will have another update this afternoon as the snows move in so check back. Have a great Monday and take care.

WAKE UP AMERICA!!!! PITTS OFF!! ER U AT ANDY ROSE!!
Here
Last couple of days were nice with the snow and all but I’m still hoping for a big 8 – 10 inch to come. Don’t have any hope for the system this weekend and Chris says it moderates after that so hopefully something happens in February.
Where U at Patty in Versailles?
Chris also says
“Signs are already showing up that the end of the month into February may go back to where we have been over the past few weeks.” also just because it goes back to normal doesn’t mean it won’t snow btw 😉 last really big snow in Knox County was in Jan of 96
If we have a normal winter in central ky I hate to say it but I’m on the Bubba wagon as far as our chances for a big snow. That’s why I’m gloom and doom for the rest of January. 11 years is a long time. Hopefully Chris is right and Feb will be brutal.
Good Morning Everyone! I’ve really enjoyed the snow as well. I’m not much on winter but, if it is going to be cold, there should be plenty of snow! I am a bit disappointed to hear the summertime news. I really enjoy the mid 80’s so, maybe that doesn’t really qualify as “heat” in Chris book. On the upside, that might counteract this cold spell on our electric bills! 🙂
The cold in Florida continues to be amazing:
RECORD EVENT REPORT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE KEY WEST FL
740 AM EST MON JAN 11 2010
…RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE SET IN KEY WEST…
THE TEMPERATURE AT KEY WEST AIRPORT DROPPED TO 42 DEGREES AT 455 AM
ON MONDAY JANUARY 11TH. THIS SET A NEW RECORD LOW TEMPERATURE FOR
THE DATE. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 48 DEGREES SET IN 1970.
THIS WAS ALSO THE SECOND COLDEST TEMPERATURE EVER RECORDED IN KEY
WEST…WITH WEATHER RECORDS DATING BACK TO 1873. THE ALL TIME RECORD
LOW TEMPERATURE IN KEY WEST IS 41 DEGREES…WHICH HAS OCCURRED
TWICE…ON JANUARY 13TH 1981…AND JANUARY 12TH 1886.
Expecting this to be the norm for this winter. We will have some pretty to look at, light snows with cold air set in and mix events for “big” events that ride in with warmer air. I still can not shake the ice concern.
Uncanny how we can not get out of this rut (if eleven years can be called a rut). Would be nice to see a busting out from this pattern.
I’ve been perfectly happy with the amount of snow at my place, 3-4″. Just enough to make it pretty but not a real issue. I enjoyed watching the light snow and flurries all weekend, too. A big snowstorm would surely get the adrenaline flowing, but not sure I want to lose power, etc.
My Mom in Ocala, FL said she got quite a dusting of snow/sleet over the weekend. Although it was something to see, she said all the native vegetation is either dead or dying and it’s very sad to look at. I lived in FL most of my life and this is only the 2nd time it’s gotten cold enough for snow.
I totally agree…this snow was beautiful, it looked like glitter falling…just enough to be pretty but not cause a major halt to all civilization. The threat of ice in the coming weekend scares me to death. We went without power for 8 days last winter…it was horrible!!!
Well, thank goodness tha clouds came back in last night! WE were wll on our way to a very cold morning, as when we went to bed, temp was at 9 degrees. HOwever, the clouds helped and dwhen we got up this morning, it had risen to 14.
Mostly cloudy here now, with the temp at 21. Radar shows snow showers just to my north west, IF they are hitting the ground.
Chris, thanks for the update, and thanks in advance for the one you will have for us later this afternoon! Everybody have a GREAT MOnday! Stay warm.
More snow? I am not ready for that. I have had my share. I am willing to give “anything” new to those who were snow deprived. Besides, I want to go back to work before I forget the basics…taking attendance, grading papers, TEACHING, etc. LOL
I’d rather have the snow ANYDAY over what may come this weekend. That being ice!!! I have a horrible feeling that’s what may be on the way. I just hope it’s brief and temps rise fast!
Don’t say ICE! If that were to happen, another week without electrcity (or even longer). Let us wish for a cold rain instead.
Bout time you got back on here
Not all of us teachers in east KY have gotten a lot of snow days… here at Pikeville Ind., we’ve only missed two days. I could stand a few more, for sure… 🙂
Hey MikeM! I’ve been reading everyday. I’ve just felt I didn’t have anything to say that hadn’t already been said. I did love the snow! I think if it has to be winter and cold then we should have snow! Here in Versailes we’ve had that ice stuff twice and I thinks that’s enough for a lifetime! Don’t you agree?
Is that thin line of snow just North of Louisville our snow chances for today? Is so Im not seeing much if anything for CKY and EKY.
My kids havent been to school since Christmas break began on Dec. 18th…
about 3-4” still on the ground here in highland heights. please please please no normal pattern!!!!!!!!!!
Coffeelady – Saw where you said “Hargis” ranch on a previous post and was curious if you know Jackson & Ella?
12Z GFS still shows the possibility of an ice storm this weekend.
If we’d missed that much, I’d be ready to come back, too. But since we’ve only missed 2 days, I could stand a few more. 😀
I just don’t see this for tonight – is something new gonna pop up later? Its 2:00 and I don’t see anything resembling a reasonable snow chance… but then again, I definitely am NOT a weatherman!
WXman, I hope that is so wrong! I’d rather have rain, just no ICE!
On a side note, the snow I have kept me from breaking my leg yesterday.
I fell off my front porch(about 4 ft) and now have severe contusions
and pulled ligaments, but no broken bones, thank God.
I think the pain is actually worse than broken bones.
I hope you feel better soon. Rest!!!
I fell on the ice once down 11 steps. I was sore for days. I feel for you.
Another Round of Accumulating Snowfall Today through Tuesday
A clipper system will move into the coal fields from the northwest today and bring numerous snow showers with it. Locations north of Interstate 64 can expect snowfall as early as late morning, with the best shot at accumulating snow between 4 pm and Midnight. Areas further south can expect snowfall to arrive after Noon, with the best shot at accumulating snow between 7 PM and 3 AM. Upslope flow will commence by dawn on Tuesday, with lingering flurries and scattered snow showers. This will be especially true in far north and eastern portions of Kentucky, where amounts of 1 to 2 inches of snowfall can be expected. Elsewhere, up to 1 inch of snow is possible by Tuesday afternoon. Moderate to heavy snowfall could occur at times from this evening through the overnight, reducing visbilities, accumulating on roadways, and making travel hazardous. Motorists are urged to use caution
Thank you, Jeni. I’m trying to rest, but it’s difficult to stay seated when I have so much I need to do, lol.
Sounds as if you had a severe fall, too…I can’t blame mine on the ice, however.
I raised up too quickly and lost my balance. I’ll be okay, though…I’m stubborn, 🙂
***SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT JKL ***
A QUICK MOVING WEATHER SYSTEM WILL MOVE IN FROM THE NORTHWEST THIS
AFTERNOON AND EVENING…BRINGING SNOW TO MUCH OF THE AREA. ANY
REMAINING SNOW WILL TRANSITION TO SNOW SHOWERS LATE TONIGHT…WITH
LINGERING SNOW SHOWERS OR FLURRIES TAPERING OFF ON TUESDAY.
OVERALL…MOST LOCATIONS SHOULD EXPECT AROUND AN INCH OF NEW SNOW BY
TUESDAY MORNING. HOWEVER…UP TO 2 INCHES CANNOT BE RULED
OUT…MAINLY IN SOUTHEAST KENTUCKY
temps. have soared to 34* here in knox co. on sw winds ahead of the cold front moving through…
Is anyone in central ky. seeing any snow falling yet? by the looks of the radar returns, it appears to be developing as it moves south and east…
I think the snow is over-forecasted for today. Looks very weak coming in on radar.
LMK not too impressed with the snow today.
240 PM EST MON JAN 11 2010 /140 PM CST MON JAN 11 2010/
…BAND OF LIGHT SNOW MOVING SOUTHWARD ACROSS CENTRAL KENTUCKY…
A FAIRLY NARROW BAND OF LIGHT TO MODERATE SNOW IS MOVING
SOUTHEASTWARD ACROSS CENTRAL KENTUCKY THIS AFTERNOON. THE LINE
STRETCHED FROM OWENSBORO TO FORT KNOX TO LEXINGTON. THIS LINE WILL
CONTINUE TO DROP SOUTHEASTWARD THROUGH THE AFTERNOON BRINGING A
SHORT PERIOD OF LIGHT SNOWS TO THE AREA.
THE HEAVIEST AREA OF SNOW WILL LIKELY MOVE SOUTHEASTWARD THROUGH
BRECKINRIDGE…OHIO…GRAYSON…EDMONSON AND HART COUNTIES OVER
THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS. A SECONDARY AREA OF ENHANCED SNOWFALL
WILL ALSO AFFECT PORTIONS OF NELSON…WASHINGTON…MERCER AND
BOYLE COUNTIES. IN THESE AREAS…A LIGHT DUSTING OF ACCUMULATION IS
POSSIBLE…BUT IN GENERAL…AMOUNTS WILL BE LESS THAN ONE HALF OF
AN INCH.
SURFACE OBSERVATIONS FROM THE AREA AIRPORTS AND THE KENTUCKY
MESONET REVEAL THAT TEMPERATURES ACROSS CENTRAL KENTUCKY ARE VERY
CLOSE TO FREEZING. THEREFORE…ACCUMULATIONS ON TREATED ROADS
SURFACES IS UNLIKELY. HOWEVER…SECONDARY AND LESSER TRAVEL ROADS
THAT HAVE NOT BEEN TREATED MAY RECEIVE A SMALL ACCUMULATION.
STAY TUNED TO NOAA ALL HAZARDS WEATHER RADIO AND YOUR LOCAL MEDIA

VERY light snow falling in downtown Lex.
light snow being reported at Lex. airport, owensboro airport, and fort knox so far…
If that’s all that’s coming–then Frankfort missed it. Oh well – just as well…I’m tired of driving in snow after dark! Hold ALL snow until January 19th!!! Then it can snow me in if it wants! 🙂 Have a great day all!
Getting some light flurries here in Richmond but looks like it was last about 30 minutes looking at that impressive radar. Wow, what a weather maker.
Light snow falling in Hustonville. Temperature is 33* with a wind chill of 24*.
Let’s face it, Tim. They’re not going back before February at this rate.
Laurel Co is out yet again tomorrow, which doesn’t surprise me because I noticed while I was out today that quite a few of the side roads are still snow-covered.
visibility looks limited on the Richnmond CAM due to snow/fog…
My cousin did the exact same thing on her front porch — or off the porch actually. She also tore some ligaments and I know that can be very painful and slow to heal. Hope you feel better soon.
yeah here too, side roads that havent been treated or scraped, still have at least 2″ of snow covering them and ice, esp. where sun doesnt hit that much..
busted unless something else forms that little band not reach ground.
Bonnie, no I don’t know them, but if they are Hargis’, they are most likely pretty good people! 😉
Well, it is snowing to beat the band outside right now, and the street is already white. Our temp is at 30, with a wind chill of 22. It may not amount to much, but, it sure is coming down now.
What about the band coming in from the NorthEast? That is getting more and more impressive with each radar return. Looks to be headed for CKY and EKY. Fingers Crossed.
they actually had a grader or grater ?? scrape ours yesterday of course it didnt’ accomplish anything but it at least went up the road lol
I just noticed that, too. When you click on the Ohio map, quite a bit shows up and it’s moving this way.
same here coffeelady..already got a rooftop dusting and roads are getting white…
although it will be short lived, heavy snow is falling in downtown Barbourville at the moment, a good 1/4 to 1/2″ already!!!
38 tomm and mid 40s tuesday!!woooooooooooo
it’ll be a nice break i guess, im kinda looking forward to some sunshine, and hopefully a 50 !!…so my kids can go back to school !!!!!!…:) 80 days is a long time til APRIL 1st…

Apparently the upslope will kick in a little later tonight.. Prolly won’t be much though..
Looking forward to the 40’s!!
not busted sorry bout your luck
this clipper is a bust. 50’s by next weekend are possibile with the epo going postive we loose a week of winter from this weekend to the weekend after that.
Excellent..!!!
Bring on spring… Cookouts, shorts & saddles, and good ole’ cornhole..!!!
…
we’ve managed to SQUEEZE out almost 1″ of snow this evening here in knox co. and still flurrying some…
mmmm…BBQ RIBS,,,,CORN ON THE COB,,,FRIED CHICKEN !!!!>>>WHOOOO–EEE
Well, there’s always a January thaw.
lake effect snows moving south through Indiana that combined with some upslope should create more snowshowers overnight for some places…
there goes some peoples idea of a bust if we got an inch as that’s what Chris was predicting
Just seen this on Accuweather…
http://www.accuweather.com/news-story.asp?partner=accuweather&traveler=0&article=2
Showing significant snow for parts of KY this weekend.
Do not get your hopes up for this weekend…
To much WAA, and no arctic air to work with… just a cold rain…
Bring on spring and March Madness..!!!
…
I think cold air could be pulled down with a strong enough low bringing the potential for significant ice and snow if all sets upright.
so i take it there isnt gunna be any snow tonight in frankfort..am i right????
Where in the world is the light snow that Chris was talking about?
Had a very light snow shower earlier for about 10 minutes and that was all she wrote here in Anderson County.
yea there is a line forming just south of inianapolis lets hope it gives us something…i go to anderson county schools and as you know it wont take much!
No your exactly right…a good dusting and you guys will have a day off 😉
You forgot the Grippos…. 😉
It is coming a light drizzle and light snow in Berea 27 degrees.
Faye, thanks!
An inch? At least you got it! I do NOT want it. Glad you got it, Tim.
Snowing in Pikeville
28 degrees
I am ready for a short warm up before another cold and snowy period. The line of snow that ran through area dropped some snow showers from about 3p-5p but didn’t put a lot down. Towards the end of it it started to stick to cars and concrete, but then they stopped.
I absolutely LOVE hearing the possibility of a cool spring and summer. I hate heat and if it is 70f or hotter I sweat so…. Plus, I need a break from summer, 18 months of Florida, 2 Florida summers have given me enough summers for a few years.
Jake
Is it possible there is some light freezing drizzle or freezing fog here in Marion. I just went out to my car and felt a light mist, then noticed my car is coated in a thin layer of ice.
snow and sleet falling in Pikeville SLICK
