Good Saturday to one and all and thanks for dropping by the blog. For those of you who have seen the great Bull Murray movie Groundhog Day… the weather of late kind of feels like we are in that flick. He kept waking up to the same day over and over and that’s how your friendly weatherdude is feeling because of the weather pattern we are in.
If i decide to kidnap a groundhog later today… don’t judge me! ![]()
The weather today will be similar to the past. We will see some snow showers and flurries around with temps struggling to get out of the teens. These heavier snow showers will continue to put down a small accumulation of an inch or less and this can cause slick travel. You can track the snows here…
Temps today will again struggle to get out of the teens for highs. A little wind will make it feel a whole lot colder than that so bundle up…
Current Temps
Wind Chills
Temps tonight will head back toward the single digits as skies clear over a snowpack. We have to clear the skies out though to get the coldest temps!
By Monday… a system will be dropping into the region from the northwest and this is likely to be a light snow producer by evening that would continue into Tuesday morning. The NAM is all over it…

That will be something to keep an eye on.
The extremely cold pattern will take a break by the middle of next week as temps head closer to normal for a change. A big storm is going to take shape across the Gulf of Mexico by the end of next week into the weekend. A lot of options are on the table for this storm and it will be handled very poorly by the models because of the pattern relaxing a bit.
Winter may just be getting started! ![]()
Have a great Saturday and take care.

Took some time but i think we finally got up to 2 inches of snow
That’s right..just kick over the snowmen in the yards…you know what that’ll get you…..more snow than you can deal with!!!
***Fume***
The cold mizer hasn’t shown half of his face yet!!
Sorry guys….just ticks me off…
wth you going on about
Over the night I have added an additional 2 inches of snow on top of the 4 inches I already had. It is still snowing.
How funny we watched Groundhog day on T.V. last night!!
WOW!!! the PUFF FACTOR is on like donkey kong!!! down here…looks like well over 1″ of new snow since midnight last night has fallen, we have close to 3″ of snow on the ground here in downtown Barbourville this morning and still snowing…I say Bring it on Bill Murray!…LOL….

did you notice them using leaf blowers to move the snow on the sidewalks yesterday in town ?
It is still snowing in Lexington. On a chair arm outside there is at least 3 inches.
Snowing again here in Corbin. Roads are covered and they look slick(haven’t actually been out, but traffic is moving slow). My son is supposed to travel back to EKU Richmond today. Does anybody know what the road conditions are like between here and there?
Lisa, Im in Berea, and traffic seems to be moving pretty well, although my husband left for work at 5am and his tracks are covered and it is still snowing.
Thanks for answering. I live on a main road and like it said, it is covered. He is driving a light weight S10 with no four wheel drive and no experience driving on slick roadways. Maybe I’ll be going to Richmond today also, lol.
Morning everyone. Andy, I think we are about to manage 2 inches, too, finally. It is snowing lightly this morning, with a temp of 12 degrees. Yesterday evening, afterwork, we went to the bank and one of the heavier snow showers come through. Roads were white in a matter of a couple of minutes.
Looks like overnight we might ave picked up another half inch to a inch I can see on the road out front where traffic tracks are covered again.
Everyone stay safe and warm today!
Looks like we got close to 2 inches last night in Versailles. Very fluffy. Andy Rose they were using leaf blowers at the hospital this morning. Can’t say i’ve ever noticed that before.
Who is Bull Murray?
starting to feel like old times, you know snow being on the ground longer than a day 😉
I wouldnt blame you a bit! I begged my little brother to call in to work Thursday night, because of the same reasons. Always better to be safe than sorry, and if it makes you feel better…well Id follow him! LoL
Got another inch last night… Up to just over 4″ now…
Nice…
BTW: Rented “The Hangover” last night… Funniest movie I’ve seen in many years..!!
Not for kids, but man you will laugh your butt off….
…
agree Vinny, that movie is a romp.
They must have watched the “other” station. That is how BM suggested shoveling this snow.
Already 24.8 here at my house in Magoffin County. Still have some light snow/flurries. Odd that we are so warm already this morning. I didn’t see any forecast that gave it to be more than 22 here today. We are nearly never as cold at my house as other places nearby are. Kind of weird.
measured 1.2 new inches of snow yesturday and last night about 5 on the ground now.
clipper looking good for a 1-2 snow mon night.
the gfs ensmebles are really going after a hvy snow maker next weekend.
Bill Murray’s twin cousin.
I was waiting for that…lol..
I noticed that as well…by the looks of things my kids are gonna end up missing at LEAST HALF of the month of JAN. of school….
Once again, we seem to have been forgotten by the snow maker here in Carter Co. We have only had about three inches. Oh well, maybe I just need to move.
Main roads are clear of snow in Rockcastle county watch out for ice spots and put a little weight in the back of the truck and be sure he has plenty of windshield washer fluid.
ehhhhh….I don’t believe the heavy stuff will be here for quite some time……
My temperature gauge says 24….is it broke???
well there is definately a GULF STORM coming next weekend… but the 12z gfs is a SNOW LOVERS…NIGHTMARE!!! because it is showing an all rain storm now…would’nt that figure!!!
THE FLIP-FLOPPIN BEGINS….this time its gonna be temp. profiles always drama in KY.!!
I for one don’t hardly buy it being that warm with storm like that coming up the mnts…but i guess its possible..
4.7” snow cover after 1.3” yesterday/early am today. 6.9 on the season. lets get that gulf storm to drop 10”+ STATEWIDE!!!! with this pattern it wouldnt be overly surprising!
Up to ~28* here in eastern Laurel Co.
We had a heavy snow shower about 20 min. ago — really pretty with flakes about the size of dimes. Of course, it only lasted a few minutes. 🙁
We picked up around an inch of new snow over night.
WOW!! hard to believe its that warm up there, its only 17* here in Barbourville, and thats being reported from the MESONET site here in KNOX CO…
Just crested 20 degrees in NW LEX. Almost feels warm 🙂
Bring on the rain to clean up this salty mess out there.
Only? Sounds like you did pretty well with this system to me, haha.
i live in lily which is between london and corbin. in lily as i type this my computer is showing 16 degrees
My area of East Point is under a special weather statement for more snow continuing today with up to an inch more.
The cold air and wind factor is going to make it bad out there.
It’s 22 here but feels much colder.
Yeah, I can’t figure it out either. Temp at LOZ was only ~17 when my thermometer showed that temp. I am now reading 32*! I have one of those indoor/outdoor guages with the outdoor sensor/transmitter located on an out-building about 25 feet from the house.
Wonder if I may be needing new batteries??
Ha! Didn’t notice that when I read the blog early this morning. funny…
your old road is clear btw
So did you people hear that story of the cross country Amtrak train ride from HE!! from Southern Cali to New York and they got stuck in Nebraska with drifts of snow 2 stories high, and a sequence of events kept occurring during the entire trip! These people said it was the most nightmarish trip.
I thought snow pack kept the temps from moderating. There is a HUGE deep snow pack across the country….How does this allow the temps to rise up into the 40s?
What are your thoughts on next week’s system? Is it still looking like rain?
Decent snow shower in NW LEX is sticking now that the sun isn’t shining through so much.
snow has picked up here in corbin. gets a little heavy at times, but not sticking my salted road. thanks to those who answered my question earlier about road conditions between here and richmond. the trip was safely made.
Really coming down now. Everything is white again.
Michael
I know! It’s amazing to see it snowing like that and NOTHING on radar. I mean, I see snow showers showing up on radar, but not over us, yet it was snowing at a good clip a few min’s ago…Slacked now but still snowing.
HEAVY SNOW IN BARBOURVILLE and CORBIN area…sticking to roads to very large flakes falling…hmmmm a good 1/2″ has already fallin here in Barbourville, with very low visibilities as well…ITS LIKE A SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPISE!!!!…LOL…
Coming down heavy again. A good 1/2″ or more so far.
Mitch, Do you see any warm air making for rain first followed by cold dry air next weekend.
cause of SOUTHERN FLOW coming, that overrides any snow pack.
7 inches season to date as of 4pm in Lexington. UK won!
I really enjoy the blog although I don’t post often. Could someone help me with a question? When the temps went down, my windshield washer motor started acting up. I had to replace the solution with -35 Prestone. Now, after 3 days, it’s acting up again. Do you think the initial (solution) could have caused this to my wiper fluid motor (or whatever it’s called)?
You could still have some ice in the pump or lines. When you replaced the fluid did you let it pump for a while to clear the lines?
20 Degrees in Pikeville the hot spot lol!!!!! Its still snowing in Pikeville.
Nice, fluffy snow in northern clay at the moment.
Here in Barbourville (hello, Tim!), it has snowed on and off all day, with periods where it really came down. I wasn’t expecting it, so it’s been a pleasant surprise. And, since it finally hit 20 degrees, I actually let the kids out to romp around in it for a while. After 3 days of no outside time, they were ready!

this would be great for ky but…its 6 days out 🙁
Pretty good snow burst in South Jessamine right now. I’m guessing we’re in the 5-6″ range for this event since Thursday. Not too bad, but I’m ready for the big one and sub-freezing for weeks!;) Makes you appreciate warm weather all the more when it arrives!
WOW! look @ those single digits out west of Bowling Green already… looks like the clouds are hanging tough here in the east though
I love snow without it being predicted. It is snowing heavy and giving a good coating in central ky!!! Biggest snows are the ones not mentioned. Plus maybe with cloud cover we will not see the single to zero digit temperatures.
We are sitting at about 12 here in Morgan Co.
Id rather have 5 inches of wet snow than dry snow. That dry stuff will go poof the second direct sun hits it where as wetter snow will last.
I am happy to have the snow just pointing that fact out.
These snowshowers have had steroids here in southern ky this evening. just came from my inlaws in Bimble in knox co. and they have a whopping 4.5″ of snow on the ground up on the hill where they live, nice..thats where were moving to, so I’ll get alot of snow…LOL..LOL…here in downtown around 4″ on the ground pretty impressive to say the least, we’ve had some pretty ehavy snow falling most of the evening.
The only thing is that 5 inches of dry snow won’t bring the power lines down! I lost power the Friday before Christmas when less than two inches of wet snow had fallen and the power was out for 38 hours!
LOL, that was funny! And seriously, I though they would have been gone by now….but still hanging around here in eastern Berea as well.
Well, the snow has stopped…
I ended up with 4.3″… Was hoping to get to 5″ of snow, but I’ll take it…
Now, if what I have doesn’t melt, then I could bypass 5″ come Monday/Monday night… (fingers crossed)…
as for next weeks storm… DO NOT get your hopes up… At best, we get a little backlash and that’s it…
…
I agree with ya…..but just looking at dry vs wet snow durability factor you see the point.
We are having a big downpour of snow right now with 17*. It is beautiful.
