Good later Thursday afternoon everyone. The snows across parts of the region really picked up in intensity this afternoon leading to reports of 3 or 4 inches in some spots. The northern half of the state appears to have got in on the heaviest band… but I have noticed a recent spike in the intensity across southeastern and eastern Kentucky lately.
The back edge of the steady, moderate to heavy snows will push through eastern Ky by late this evening. Snow showers and squalls are already building back to our west and northwest near Louisville. You can see it all here…
The snow showers and squalls will kick in later this evening and be on and off through Friday night and can deliver another 1″-3″ for much of the area. Before all is said and done… some spots are likely to have 6″ of snow on the ground. ![]()
Winds will pick up this evening and overnight as an arctic front swings through. This will create blowing and drifting snow and temps that crash into the high single digits and low teens by morning. Wind chill temps will be 0 to -10!
Sub zero temps are looking like a real possibility this weekend. Of course… you knew that was possible several days ago. ![]()
Keep posting your weather conditions and I will update later. Gotta go earn my paycheck! ![]()
Take care.

Really pretty here on Lakeville in Magoffin Co. Snow is coming down hard!
i must say i am shocked at where all the snow is coming from but, its pouring, we’ll do 3” in lex it looks like.
yea its CRANKING IN GUNCXHESTER CB, look like it not going last long though till main batch moves out.
got half inch out of this burst or so.
i will say this if it snows like this for a hour or so it put down 2 inches easily.
Early snow was ice-like pellets but now the Snow is powering down right now…bigger, fluffier and thicker…hey, that sounds like some good biscuits! UPS truck is having a hard time with the hills and curves. Looking better and better for NO SCHOOL tomorrow
Really coming down hard and fast now, everything covered, probably 1/2 inch or so, but sticking to everything.
Coming down in a pretty good clip here in Berea, but really about 1″ is all that is on the ground. Hoping for a little more….
A good 2 3/4″ here in Bardstown w/ that last batch of snow; another one just starting, but the winds are starting to kick in just now, too, so I’m seeing some blowing and even some little ‘Snonadoes”…pretty neat!:)
Maybe this wasn’t too much of an ‘underachiever’ after all?!;) I will take what I can get & be HAPPY!;)
2.8 in versailles that batch of snow showers to the west should put us over 3 all roads snow and ice covered.
We have about an inch and a half here at my house in Somerset, and it is still snowing. Main roads are slushy, but passable, but side roads are a nightmare! Our subdivision is like a skating rink, and the temps have not dropped yet…I can imagine what it will be like in the morning! And even later tonight!
Temp is currently 28, with snow falling. Also, did anyone else notice that the snow we are getting right now is quite a bit wetter than I was expecting? It is a wet snow here right now. I know that is going to change, but I thought the whole thing was supposed to be that way.
Close to 3/4″ in Pulaski Co. Radar isn’t looking good for too much more down here tonight.
my total as well
about 2.75 inches here in north lexington.
roads are pretty well snow/slush covered, even the treated roads in downtown lexington
About 1 and a half inches here. Main roads passable, but side roads are slick and snow covered. Snowing pretty good right now, and temp is 28. Also, snow is a wet snow right now. More moisture, I guess….
looks like the bust is busted
Well, I guess I have to eat a little crow – after that last burst came through about 30 mins. ago, we are now up to around 3″ in Wilmore in South Jessamine…Hope to get in on the high side of that next 1-3″!
Keep trying to post, but keep getting moderated….28, wet snow falling, roads slick here. (side roads terrible!)
Never so glad to get home. The 4 lane between Paintsville and Pike county line was almost unpassable dangerous we saw at least 3 wrecks and several spin outs one very close to us and it was an suv or 4 wheel drive.Inez was terrible when we left there after we crossed into Pike county the roads were much better.Snow is coming down pretty heavy right now in Pikeville the winds were blowing like Chris said Please be careful!!!!!!!!
talk about a bust lol middle tn nws busted bad with 1-3” down that way, tn aint seen zilch all day
i am with you rolo i enjoyed todays quaint little cute snow but i want a monster, i want all hell to break loose and plows to get stuck in the snow!!! big one anyone?!!!
betting horses and sipping coffeee, light snow falling, i have to say cant get no bertter than that my friends IMO.
slacking off on intensity in gunchester, id say 3/4 of inch now has fell.
Snonadoes…cute way of putting it! Really snowing at Rogers, near Natural Bridge State Park. Just so beautiful here in the mountains. I agree this doesn’t appear to be an ‘underachiever’.
Just drove from Lexington to London. I assumed it would not be as bad down here after looking at the radar before I departed, but it snowed at a pretty good clip all the way down. Got behind a salt truck on old Highway 80, and followed it all the way to my house on the Clay/Laurel line. I spent 5 minutes trying to get up a 15 foot section of my driveway, with four-wheel drive. Don’t know where that came from.
Just came through woodford co. on BG parkway down versailles rd. to Lex. Couple of wrecks on BG. New Circle was a mess. Vehicles just barley moving. No school in Fayette Friday. Good job on the snow predictions, Chris.
MAJOR east coast storm showing up on all the models for next wknd….here we go again!!!!
been snowing moderate for a couple of hrs…about 3/4″ or more in spots…
radar looks to be slacking off in this area though in the next hr. or so..before the upslope kicks in tonight!
Never so glad to be home 4 lane between Paintsville and Pike County line is almost Impassable saw 3 wrecks several spin outs one very near us be careful dangerous
Snowing here north of Hazard. It’s beautiful!
lmk seems to think lex gets another inch tonight, lets hope season total at 5.7”
Looks like we have about 3” here in Cynthiana.
No school in the Whitley County school system for Friday!
Snow falling here in Isom (Letcher County)…stay safe on the roads…the back roads are covered.
Moderate snow currently falling in East Bernstadt. 3/4″ to nearly 1″ in most spots so far.
Bring on the upslope!!! 😉
Anyone here from Pike county who’s really hoping the power doesn’t go off again?
Never so glad to get home 4 lane between Inez and The Pike county line was almost unpassable
it isnt a wet snow is it.
I am from Pike
I was never so glad to get home 4 lane
between Inez and Pike county line almost Impassable
There’s already a little bit on our power lines.
The snow accumulations have increased in Georgetown. We are just a tad over 3 inches in my backyard, and piling up fairly quickly.
no
I was never so glad to get home 4 lane
between Inez and Pike county line
almost Impassable No more moderation PLs
Still trying to get up to a half an inch here on the farm
I was never so glad to get home 4 lane
between Inez and Pike county line
almost Impassable No more moderation PLs.
I’m with you Chastity….Bring on the BIG, HUGE, FLUFFY flakes we got Dec. 19th…Now that was very pretty flakes.
How about one of those “Little House on the Prairie” blizzards…where it snows past the cabin’s loft and Pa & Almonzo trek out to the barn via rope on top of about 15ft. of snow (w/o “falling through”, mind you…amazing…)???!:)
if you want that you have to do without power
Just over 3 inches here in Lawrenceburg. The snow just has not let up this afternoon and itsd still snowing moderately as we speak!
And there is snow shower and squall chances tonight?? Yep…I think we can top 4 or 5 inches before all is said and done with 😉
2.8″ in my back yard on average…
Should be able to hit 3″ by morning…
…
roads getting slick in south Lex–surprisingly snow a little wetter than you might have thought–roads started with a bit of ice before hand. Should Fayette Co schools are out–no chance of school, tomorrow? Will the roads improve any? doubtful….
doh! i meant Fayette co schools have canceled for tomorrow…
South Lexington snow ate its Wheaties for sure, but just 14 mile south in North Richmond, the snow must have ate Special K, since there is at least an inch less snow. Just 14 miles.
Just over 2 inches in southern Pike county and snowing hard!!!
Still coming down pretty good in Frankfort. Couldn’t tell you how much we got in my back yard cause I’m still at WORK! Not looking forward to driving back roads after dark.
South Lexington close to 3″ and north Richmond about half that.
If I’m measuring correctly, I have about 4 inches and still snowing hard.
Already had some on the ground, though, from the clipper of lake effect that came through earlier in the week.
Been out playing in the snow with my doggies.
It’s comical to watch 8 month old dachshunds play in snow!
I’d say we have close to 3 inches in Carlisle/Nicholas Co. as well. Looks like another decent band of snow is getting ready to make it’s way through. I’d just like to get enough to cover up all the grass, been a while since I’ve see that happen!!! HAHA
Ha, I thought of that too. With the talk of blowing snow and whiteout conditions, I was thinking of how Pa tied the rope from the house to the barn so he could find his way to and fro. In one episode Half Pint or somebody went outside and lost contact with the rope and wandered aimlessly in the blizzard. No, I don’t think he/she died. Pa undoubtedly saved the day.
My hubby usually leaves for work at 4:30 in the morning but I am forcing him to wait until sunrise on Friday. We are out in the middle of nowhere and blowing snow will not be fun.
Just measured the snow at 6:00 p.m. we have 2 inches at hagerhill and still snowing at a good clip.
It’s so much fun to watch my Miniature Yorkie, Pomeranian, and Long-Haired Chihuahua play in the snow too! They are so cute and love it!
I live close to Bush School in Laurel Co. and my road is very icy–nothing to do but cook and eat-homemade cheeseburgers and fried potatoes right now.
I like playing in it with them, lol. Buffy and Neville have to “bounce” across the snow…it comes up to their stomachs. Do yours get really cold?
Send some burgers my way. Just curious, for the person who lives in the natural bridge area, including the snow from the other day, how much have you gotten this week?
Here is some SERIOUS eye candy for next week!!!!! Wouldnt this be nice!!! The models have been onto this system for a couple days now. This run would be perfect for a big snow for us in Somerset!!!
i actually saw that LITTLE HOUSE ONP episode other day.
now that was a snow.
well Im going go check the models out be back in a few, but the NORTHWEST FLOW going be very nice i think for the 2nd round of this stoem.
oops forgot to post the model run…

I bet you know Dave Baker and his wife then, they live right there on right as u pass BUSH.
Im not far away, I am right off 80 back in GUNCHESTER side.
Joe T. we could use a storm like that here Pulaski Co. I only ended up with 3/4″ at my house 7miles NE of Somerset. Don’t know what you got on your side of town but I’m sure it wasn’t much more than me. That storm sure would look nice
Up to 3″ now in my back yard, front yard & all over…!
3″ not bad… Prolly snow on and off for another 24 hrs or so, so I could go to 4″ be Saturday morning…
ROADS ARE TERRIBLE IN BEREA US25! Just started to head home from my moms….got on 25 and changed my mind, safer to stay here, and the wind is really picking up.
* What is NW flow? Will it do anything else for Madison County?
Bubba I know I harrass you but it’s all in fun.:) With your gloom and doom disposition your lucky the snow gets as close as 14 miles from you. Forget the past 11 years and fill your glass half full and hope for snow like the rest of us.
Madison County schools closed Friday.
Got 1.5 inches in Science Hill maybe a tad more….notice significantly less in somerset….Nancy about 1.5…..pretty sad totals. Here’s hopin for the next one!!!
about an 1″ here in Barbourville, its been like pulling teeth just to get that today..lol…still snowing lightly, Im with CHAS, lets get the upslope crankin, im ready for some serious lake enhanced snows…
…………….
just thought of something, hmmm…I wonder how much of the lakes are froze, all this bitter cold they gotta be freezing up…and when they get froze, that means no more lake enhanced snows…:(
Yes a good 3″ in northwest Lex….Subdivision rds/driveways covered, some blowing…..This forecast was definitely NOT a bust…I think the Winter storm warning was a bust, but winter weather advisory is perfect for what is going on now. I will say the winds (at least so far) are not as strong as I thought they would be. Still snowing lightly
When you guys say upslope ……This doesn’t apply to central KY does it (LOL)
Is that the one where the Indian drags the deer to his house for him? That was service.
Just drove to my home in Jessamine County. The wind is really blowing the snow and we have a lot of drifting already. As I went down my county road I was having a hard time figuring out where the edge of the road was located because of the drifting snow. Also hard to tell how much snow we’ve had because of all the drifting. I do know our heaviest snow didn’t start to fall until around 3pm and afterward.
here is the next 6 hr. run from joe’s post of 228hr…looks like a nice snowstorm for ky…but we all know the routine….
http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/18/images/gfs_pcp_240m.gif
long time reader, newish poster… NW flow (I think) is after the low passes the winds rotate around to the NW–Christ mentioned “wrap-around” snows–I think is what that refers to. These can be “lake-effect” snows as well if the moisture is off the great lakes. In E-KY this can be “upslope snow” as the air rises over the higher elevation is wrings the precip out of the air–that part doesn’t apply to central-KY (if I missed any of that, somebody please correct! tx).
Got about 3 inches where I’m at in Morgan Co. Roads are very slick….
Mine bounce too. It’s so cute! Yes, they get really cold and wet. I wrap them in towels after I dry them off. 🙂
Then I snuggle with them on the couch.
Mine are Cricket, Chloe and Sophie.
which comments get moderated? it seems random…..
Just came from Irvine thru Richmond, back to Berea, main roads where pretty slushy and slick in spots, but the backroads where slicker then ____! Passed a dozen of road crews but I don’t think the treatment is working as fast then they can dish it out! Snowing heavy in Irvine (Estill County), but slacked down as we came thru Waco in Madison County, then picked up as we came thru the bypass, the winds will cut thru ya! A very HEAVY SNOW A true winter’s night here in Madison County.
We have a good 1-2″ spotty 3″ here and still coming down. Temp is right at 23° I think Chris was spot on for Berea.
I can’t wait til he talks about the “NEXT WEEK” storm! 🙂
Got around 3-4 inches here in Southern Franklin County.
That would be a nice snow here North of Nashville; I have been surprised at how consistent the storm has been on the models, both with placement and intensity
GFS has shown that storm for the last few days. But temps are marginal and we’ve seen the track its taken with earlier runs…lakes cutter, too far east, etc etc. But atleast its still showing up on the map for us!
Traveling to Irvine (Estill County), roads were pretty decent, and passed dozens of salt trucks.
On the way back, the snow had picked up in intensity and was snowing heavy from Irvine to Richmond the roads were covered with about 2″ of slush on most of 52 and some of the back roads of 499 was slicker then _____. Skidded a couple of times, I think the snow is coming down faster then the road crews can handle! I sure appreciate the hard work they put into keeping the roads clear as best as they can! It’s a TRUE Winter’s night here in Berea!
We got a good 1-2″ with spotty 3″ and still coming down moderately. The temp is at 23°.
Chris.. you was spot on for this part of Berea! I truly appreciate your weather reports and the blog!
still trying to get to that half inch mark here on the farm
Just treated my 4 year old to his first taste of snow cream! Brings back a lot of memories from the 80’s. Really enjoy the blog & everyone who posts. I’ve become the unofficial weather source for all my co-workers since I’m such a weather junkie! Take care everyone!

I love their names! I actually have 7 dogs, but the older ones aren’t as excited by the snow, lol.
My cats just looked at the dogs in that “Garfield” way of theirs and watched out the window.
I’m the unofficial source, too, lol.
Not generally. Upslope happens when the air mass meets the Eastern KY mountains and cools, allowing the moisture in the air to condense and be precipitated out.
Just came back from Irvine in Estill County, the roads are slicker then _____. Most part of 52 and especially on 499. Snow was heavy all the way to Irvine, back to Berea. We passed alot of road crews, but I think the snow was coming down faster then they could treat them. I truly appreciate their hard work as they try to keep the roads safe for all of us!
It’s truly a TRUE winter’s night here in Berea! The temp is hanging around 23 at the moment with flurries. We have a good 2″ maybe 3″.
Thanks Chris you was SPOT on!! I can’t wait for you to start talking about “NEXT WEEK”! 🙂
Got a little over 4 inches of snow…and it’s still snowing:)

Pouring the snow here in carter county && the roads are very bad..Winds havent picked up at all yet, dreading when it does..be safe if you have to be out tonight…
About 3″ here in SE Lex. That first round of snow this morning wasn’t much, but this afternoon and evening snow was pretty good. Has just about stopped now. Well, time to go get the old shovel out of storage and get to work. Hope I get to use it some more this winter. Be careful tonight. Roads are bad.
MODERATION grrr lol

Roads are bad from Irvine to Berea, skidded a couple of times. Many road crews are out and I truly appreciate their dedication to keeping our roads safer! Snow was coming down heavy at times coming back from Irvine. Chris you was spot on!! It’s truly a WINTER’S night here in Berea!
25, 52, and 499 where pretty slick.
Berea
Flurries and 23
2″ spotty 3″
SLICK ROADS in the area
to any of the younger generation or u all that have kids, when they get into teenage years get them PURPLE RAIN ALBUM.
damn what great music from early 80s and the movie ROCXKED AS WELL.
awesome, the wind has picked up here in gunchester big time.
Big snow burst in N Richmond about 4″, but hard tell due to blowing snow.
Just got back in Winchester from Lexington. Side streets in Lex are bad now, of course. I-64 has some snow sticking, plows are busy, and I saw one 4WD off the road in the median. But I didn’t think it was bad at all, just very windy on the overpasses especially. Not much eastbound traffic to watch out for. We have about 3.5 inches of snow here in beautiful downtown Winchester, and the wind is really kicking it around.
Sorry for double posting.. Moderation may bring about 10 of my comments up! lol 😀
Well, it’s no snowpocalypse (though you’d have thought it might be if you were out trying to buy a few groceries last night). But,wow, the wind is really picking up. Just got back from walking the dog and had to wear my speedo goggles just to keep the snow out of my eyes.
Thankfully, hardly anyone’s out tonight, so I don’t think anyone saw that spectacle.
But, the trends, they are so priittee.
Probably more like 3″, but hard to tell.
Well, we have about an inch here at the ranch. Wind has picked up, and snow is blowing all around. temp is 23 now. Some spotty snow still falling. I hope we can get in on some of the lake effect stuff, but it is not looking like it at this point.
Roads are not in good shape, and when the temp drops, salt is not going to help a lot. Outside the house it is a skating rink.
Whoever mentioned the snow being wetter, I noticed that, too. I think there was more moisture than first thought.
Tomorrow morning should be REAL interesting, for sure. Good night for a football game, with some coffee, and popcorn a little later! 😉
We have four little poodles who love to run in the snow. It gets stuck to their tight little curls and we have to try to dust them off, but it’s pretty pointless. They have sweaters and PJs and all kinds of coats, but those things get wet in the snow. I’m crazy about little dogs. 🙂
Thanks, Jimmy. I read all the time as well, but dont post too often. Oh well for central ky. Ive lived here for 10 years, and was in OK before….Saw bigger snows in Tulsa than Ive seen here. Anyways, appriciate it!
