Good afternoon everyone. Our snowy period is well underway now as our arctic low is rolling across the region at this midday hour. Light to moderate bands of snow have broken out along it and a lot of places have picked up an inch or snow already. This snow will continue through the day before tapering off from west to east early this evening. Overall… today’s snowfall will be on the tune of 1″-3″ for many of us. The south will be closer to the low end of the scale as the best moisture is across the northern half of the state.
I did notice the new model runs came in a bit wetter with today’s snow and the ensuing snow showers and squalls. This makes me feel as if the snow map I put out last night is in pretty good shape so I have no changes to that.
A general 2″-5″ snowfall for much of the state is in the cards through Saturday Morning with locally higher amounts very possible.
Here is your radar…
Roads will continue to become snow covered and I have some cams from across the state that you can check out…

Somerset
Richmond
Harrodsburg

Keep helping out the blog and your fellow bloggers by telling us what’s going on where you live. I will check back with another update later this afternoon.
Take care.

moderate snow band from louisville to e-town looking impressive could still be another inch or two this afternoon.

Well, at least it’s pretty 🙂 Light, steady snow falling in Lexington (Chevy Chase).
just flurries so far here in knox co. Barbourville area, and no accumulation either so far…:(
CB, thanks for the update. No snow here in Johnson County yet, but I didn’t expect it until later.
I think your snow estimates are good, too…and also think that is quite a bit of snow considering some of our past winters.
Bubba hasn’t completely forced me into the dark side yet, lol.
WE have very fine snow falling here where I am. A few bigger flakes are beginning to mix in again, and the radar looks like we will see more a little later this afternoon and evening.
Temp is at 26, but I was just ourside, and it seems a lot colder, even though the wind has not kicked up much yet.
It is a damp cold, which leads me to think we have a little more moisture than first thought, at the present time.
Main roads were slick, but are now spotty, and in pretty good shape for the time being. what melts will refreeze though, later, so it will probably get slick!
Here in Lexington almost feels like ice pellets hitting you, but its just a light snow, maybe an inch so far of snow….
Odd…the radar has been showing that it is snowing in Magoffin County for the past few hours but nothing has fallen and until just a bit ago the sun was shining!
no snow here in pike co yet
no snow here in pike co yet
no snow here in pike co yet
no snow here in pike co yet
no snow here in pike co yet
Lots of banding setting up along the OH river now. The rush hour this afternoon in the Bluegrass may still be a rough one. We are not out of the woods just yet. Front won’t pass through here until supper time.
moderate to heavy snow band starting to move into Anderson County from Spencer and Nelson Counties. Its taking so long to get here!
roads are starting to cover in Corbin but like Tim said in Barbourville zilch so far
Chris I have to disgree ole buddy, ur snow map is not going to be right as a whole. alot of S/se ky aint going see a inch much lesss the 2-5.
that said u cant get everything right.
nothing but flurries at times in CLAY COUNTY.
rolo he didnt say it would snow at 9am he said the advisory is from 9am to 5am.
you are a sour apple I see.
I noticed no comment about wrap around for tonight. Did I miss something again?
Sorry Chris, but I afraid you missed this one in SE Ky. Just flurries so far @ 1 pm! Radar has showed snow all day but it isnt hitting the ground. Air is just to dry.
Boyle County- 30* light snow….Front end of the heavier band of snow just now getting here…..estimated 3/4 to one inch on the ground.
Rolo, Rolo, roll over and go back to sleep. The weekend isn’t over yet.
Absolutely nothing in Floyd Co. either. Radar has looked impressive, unfortunately the atmosphere is the opposite. So much for this storm. On to the next one!
Where is my 8 inches of snow at Rolo ? 😉
Is it over?
Oh, ye of little faith. The air has to moisten up before snow will fall. (Heard this from Lexington news this morning)
Thanks Chris for all you do for us!!!
Georgetown is snow covered and snow isn’t letting up. Hwy 25 is moderately snow covered and as predicted the farther north you go the worse it gets. Sadieville is really getting snow. Beautiful…just beautiful!
Channel 6 just said Weather winter advisory for Letcher pike and all co in EAST KY.
I will agree with Jeni above, Georgetown is getting covered pretty good right now. We’ll be around 3″ by the time this consistent snow lets up later today.
How can Corbin, which is basically a straight shot to the west from Barbourville have an inch of snow and it not even cover the rooftops here?
i believe chris did mention “backlash” as he called it snow in a post yesterday and we are suppose to get lake effect i have bout 2 inches and am forecasted for 2 more inches more through saturday and im gunna get them.
John Austin: What are the roads like in Anderson county? I am heading home from Louisville this afternoon.
downtown roads in versailles slushy almost all other roads snow covered.
Yep, just two days ago, he was guaranteeing 5 to 8 inches. Same ole Rolo.
Light snow in East Bernstadt at the moment. It’s hard to tell how much we’ve gotten (if much at all) because we already had a light dusting in this area prior to today.
There are reports coming out of Webster & Winston counties in MS right now of 1/4 to 1/2″ of ice accumulation. I know it’s disappointing that we’re not seeing a lot of snow from this system, but keep in mind, folks, that could have been us, and, in fact, a year ago it was!
on a jobsite in Edwardsport, IN – storm underperformed in relation to all local forecasts here – hope you all fare better back home in KY and precip shield holds together for you – it looks like we had alot more dry slotting here than expected
Boyle County- 32* Light to Moderate snow
CHAR,CHAR,CHAR im wide awake. not rednecking my point is valid.
the NW/LAKE EFFECT will only effect a few counties as it always does.
I didnt rip nobody just saying the snow map as a WHOLE is not spot on.
there ALOT of people who have got the 2-4 inches that was given by METS in lexington tv station either.
the wasson woman even admitted they was wrong and that most of the prcip went north.
I am fine with no snow, i mean I could care less about a few inxhes anyway, 12 inch plus only snow im EXCITED ABOUT and that because of my neices and nephews who have never saw a REAL SNOW.
He’s not a sour apple …. he’s just a good ole John Kerry Flip-flopper. He’ll let you know, though, when he gets a prediction right …. which is, like getting snow, rare.
WHERE’S THE SNOW??? NOT IN PIKE COUNTY
WHERE’S THE SNOW??? NOT IN PIKE COUNTY
WHERE’S THE SNOW??? NOT IN PIKE COUNTY
WHERE’S THE SNOW??? NOT IN PIKE COUNTY
WHERE’S THE SNOW??? NOT IN PIKE COUNTY
Anybody live near the London/Corbin airport? NWS Jackson reported around 1pm that light freezing rain was falling in that area. Just wanted to see if anyone could confirm that.
CHAR,CHAR,CHAR I am just poiointing out the obvious, its not just the map above but the TV METS even admitted they was wrong ontoday snow.
yea the lalke effect will hit late tonite and tomm but that only a very few counties that actually score on that as well.
I could care less anyway. IAM OLD SCHOOL or bust as far as SNOWFALL goes.
Bubba, Bubba, Bubba. 🙂
So Jim C and Chris B was wrong about it all.
It wasn’t supposed to start until later…just now starting to come down in Johnson County.
really? how so?
I don’t think they are, Vanessa. Their forecasts didn’t say what most people chose to hear.
Selective hearing occurs in adults, too, lol.
Do I detect a bit of witty sarcasm in your post? 🙂
man I hope Jason gets to LULLU before the bomb goes off,
any u all watch GENERAL HOSPITAL.
that guy from spider man is playing a cool rolo. FRANCO thats his real name too.
everyone in eastern kentucky shutup! im so tired of your whining and crying u will get snow at some point today i however have met the above snow totals. yall got snow in december remember?? yea exactly you have got plenty of snow in the last month and now its the west turn! and were not even getting much. just like 2 inches and your complaining because lake effect is just not enough. no the storm that a few weeks ago made you say ” no more snow for the year” just not enough. ughh so annoying and half of you cant even make up your minds on whats gunna happen! just go with the flow itll all work out! call it a bust but as long as you get 2 inches( the low end of the totals) you have met the totals.;)
Nah…I quit soap operas cold turkey about 10 years ago.
nobody says there wrong, as a WHOLE yes the totals are not going to meet expectations.
now if ur in HAZARARD,LETCHER and pike u get some good upslope snows, so I think thats were CChris THE LEGEND Bailey saw most of the snow coming from.
but 6 inches out of that might not happen either.
Snowing hard here in Magoffin now!
hold on now, nobody crying that I have seen, SOMERSET not eastern ky.lol
my ramblings are just that, they are about the UNDERACHIEVING of the system and thats it.
now northern parts of state look to be getting their forcasted snow. thats great because they hadnt had anythiung much yet.
heck the snow showers are fine for me, love just seeing snow fall myself.
as far as some feeling bad, ole joe over in somerset never got much snow in december so give the guy a break.lol
The main roads like 127 are in fairly good shape but the side roads and even some of the two lane roads are a bit tricky. Most side roads are covered after a heavy snow shower we just had in the past 30 minutes.
good deal, I started watching GH when I come in from school in the early 80s and have watched ever since.
Snow in the air in Pike county now.
Who needs soap operas? This blog rocks! 🙂
getting some sleet pellets here in the barbourville area, yuck…hope it dont go over to freezing rain..temp. is up to 28*
It was spitting some flurries, but even those quit. I’m so disappointed.

I think a lot of the people (rolo, tim, andy)that post on here are on the western edge of the eastern KY area. We do not get the “lake effect” that areas to our east get. We are in the JKL forecast area, but if you draw a line from Bell Co. straight to the north you will have the counties that get lake effect. Laurel, Knox, Whitley, Mcreary, etc… usually get very little from these systems. We’ve had a 3 inch snow and a couple of rooftop snows this year. Nothing to talk about. We could be considered more south central because the E. Kentucky forecast usually doesn’t apply to us.
I must agree, E Ky gets the snow more often than anyone else but seems to never be happy. I got virtually no snow when they got plenty for the Christmas storm. It’s our turn in Cen Ky.
Steady light snow in Mercer Co. since around 8. Probably about an inch on the ground but it’s blowing around some.
LOL..I agree you should see us at my house fighting over the computers.lol…lol…everyone else wants to farm on facebook…but im constantly checking blog,radars,videos,etc.etc….lol…ITS ADDICTIVE!!
looks like northern ky. is the sweet spot this time around, enjoy gang. maybe we’ll get in on another round later on, here in EXTREME s.e. ky. we’ve kinda been in a dry slot, mostly flurries, and now recently some sleet, even freezing rain being reported in the area…WAA RULES!!!!!…LOL…
Sorry everyone, but i think we missed it this time. Not a flurry in Pike Co.

Boyle County- 32* light to moderate snow…estimate one inch on the ground.
Winds are picking up and starting to turn temp should start to tumble soon. Snow in southern and se Ky. should start to pick up very soon.
Thats it.. you remind me of STEFANO from DAYS! lol 😉
You was spot on Bubba.. but I’ll always look for the BubbaCast buster! It’s coming to a KY area near you real soon! 😉
I live in the very SW tip of Pike Co and work in Letcher Co, and believe me, I DON’T want the snow! lol! You folks in the rest of the state are more than welcome to my share! So far no snow falling around here, at least not below 3500 feet. No reports of snow over on Pine Mountain yet, usually the first place to get snow covered. I really hope this one fizzles out!
it snowing in letcher Co.
I was wondering. When I walked across the street to get lunch in Lexington, it was what I thought snowing…when I walked back and got inside I had pellets on my coat. Could this be sleet? Isn’t it too cold for that?
Bom,BOm,Bom, another central Ky forecast bites the dust. This johnson’s baby powder falling out of the sky isn’t my idea of snow. Wimpy stuff. As I told you guys, cold=dry air=wimpy snow systems. Radar looks impressive but down here on the ground it’s a gentle as a little lamb.
light to moderate snow in southern perry county. very small flakes. nothing on the ground from this snow
snow looks to be intensifying on radar as it nears ashland area…LUCKY DOG CHRIS!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XThBcCPaEJk
a link to a video of the snow i made.
Per Belski, Snow totals now at 2-4 in Louisville. Still an isolated 5″ possible when it’s done
I live about 4 or 5 miles the way the crow flies from the airport and we haven’t had any freezing rain here. We have just barely had any snow, not even enough to measure.
Snowing in Olive Hill right now, actually quite hard, roads are covered, streets are covered, school is closed for tomorrow. It’s quite a pretty scene.
It depends on which part of Laurel Co you’re in as to how much you get from the lake effect. I’m in the northern part of the Co, where the elevation is a bit higher, so upslope is usually fairly decent. The further south into the county you get, the less effect the upslope seems to have. NWS in Jackson has even stated recently that Laurel is a tricky county to forecast upslope events for.
No good white stuff in Barbourville, really. But, on the bright side, it has warmed to a balmy 28 degrees. I may be able to walk the poor, cabin-fevered dog tonight.
Also wanted to add that I agree with you, Bobt. I think a few the counties in the SW part of Jackson’s forecast area are more south central than they are eastern or southeastern…
LOL @ Tim…only one comp in my house & it’s MINE!;) I don’t do the farming and the cafe world on FB, either…Wx blogs, NWS, posting on all the FB Wx sites is more than enough to keep me occupied. Pees off the hubby because he doesn’t understand my infatuation, but, ohhh, well…I don’t get his constant watching of the same ol’ Lonesome Dove, Million Dollar Baby & SlingBlade movies over & over & over again, either…lol!:)
Finally nearing the 2″ mark here in Bardstown w/ that heavier band…looks like one more to come, then here comes the blowing & drifting!
It still amazes me how we can be completely covered on the radar (and by some brighter colored areas, too) and not have ANYTHING make in to the ground. I’m in the big Pikeville metropolis, BTW. It appears, at least on the local level, that the snow dome is still in affect. Hopefully we can tear her down later tonight!
Tim, I noticed the same thing going on here about 15-20 minutes ago. Could the weather here be any more strange?! LOL!
I wasn’t dissing anyone for watching them, Rolo, want you to know that.
I started watching them after school in the 60’s.
Loved GH, it was one of my favorites.
I just got so addicted I had to choose between real life and college or soaps.
🙂
Johnson and Floyd sometimes get in on those upslopes, too.
oh man STEFINO was and still is the MAN!!!
that MITCH LAWERANCE on that one life to live was a foool too.
Its coming down pretty good here. I’m pretty close by up in Flatwoods. Roads are just starting to get covered up. Hard to tell how much we’ve got, already had a couple inches on the ground.
WOW, you could really tell the wind was starting to kick up there! Thanks for sharing that video and your thoughts, Mitch.
If Corbin has an inch then I would like to know how that can happen when I’m about 7 miles from Corbin (by road travel)and don’t even have enough snow to measure?
NO SHOOL IN KNOX TOMORROW!!! maybe by march!!! this should take care of their week of spring break, since they’ve missed the whole week this week!!!…
Bubba you were wrong it didn’t under perform or over perform it just didn’t perform at all in Knox county 😉
It’s snowing hard here in East Point, not big flakes, but a steady, constant coming down of the white stuff. Back roads are starting to get covered.
I used to watch “Days” since I was about 3 yrs. old…I, too just got terribly bored with it…I mean, just how many times can Stefano DiMera “rise from the Ashes” during a 5 year period??! (I lost count at around 8..lol)
Moderate snow; 31 degrees here in Maysville/ Mason County. A little better than 2 inches of snow on the ground. Beautiful!
What Christmas storm?
Pretty quiet here in Whitley County. Cloudy skies with something coming down. It’s so fine I can’t tell if it’s ice or really fine snow. I just know that it’s freezing. Still hoping for a tad more so the kiddos can stay home from school tomorrow. It’s too cold to get them out! 🙂
Thanks for the update Chris. TG put his out too. You guys rock!
See, that just goes to show you how big (and different) Pike Co. is. Here in the Pikeville area, I know that most all of us would gladly welcome more snow. We’ve not been terribly deprived this year, however – we got around 4″ right before Christmas and a couple inches at other times. Shoot, we’ve already gotten more snow this year than we have in the past 3 (or more) winters combined! 🙂
Poor Tim… And just think, we probably haven’t even begun to see the last of the snow days for this school year yet. LOL!
I haven’t heard anything on Laurel yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they called it off for tomorrow as well at some point today. I know some of the back roads here were still in rough condition this morning and what little bit of snow that has fallen hasn’t helped the situation much.
Yeah, finally started snowing here, quite heavily.
Yeah, finally started snowing here, quite heavily.

Well, linc…it could be waaaay worse for you…you COULD live in Bardstown…”The Donut Hole”…lol!;) Seriously…go over to Belski’s blog sometime and check out the pix he runs on it (to the left there..) and see the pic someone took of the actual “Hole” over the last snow we had…snow everywhere except right here…but we’re doing OK right now..I’m not complaining. This wasn’t the snowfall I expected, but considering our losses thus far, it’s a helluva lot better than NOTHING (or the Ice Storm we always get..)
Watching the rader and noticing it keeps filling in just west of Louisville
Just like the classic line from Dumb and Dumber, “There is still a chance”, since still have until Saturday. I have been trying to reply to posts, but keep getting moderated. Again, probably for the better of the blog.
Snow is beginning to pick back up again here in Lawrenceburg. Looks like the next snow band is moving in from the west.
Could we get another half inch or so from this??? Guess we’ll see..
And ur right Dan…it does look like its filling back to the west of Louisville.
2” in lexington, this is our big storm for this winter likely enjoy it! i aint complaining!
Your gonna get a lil more to add to that 2 inches in Lexington so don’t give up yet Tommy!
At least one more good snow band is headed your way.
Rolo,
I am addicted to GH. I Tivo it and watch them at night.
Coming down good south of Corbin! Sticking to everything.
was doing that earlier around lunch time on Gordon Hill
Ya’ll got a bunch of heavy, wet snow some days before Christmas that knocked out power to some. Felt bad for those that had no power for Christmas.
Laurel Co has called off school for tomorrow.
heavy snow in versailles.
Fine–steady snow in Pikeville
Finally – nice sized flakes in NW Lex (Meadowthorpe)
Yay! It’s snowing in Williamsburg! Coming down pretty good now, the roads are turning white. Stay safe everyone!
Before the inevitable comments on the schools being out start popping up,
I would like to point out
that if children are hurt in accidents en route to or from schools,
the school system is held accountable for it.
There would be numerous lawsuits if schools ignored danger to the safety of the children.
It’s not because they don’t care about education.

There is no convincing people who think they know better than the officials making the call.
I don’t envy those who do have to make the decision- it’s like a referee, you make some happy, some upset. There’s just no winning there. LOL
Coming down hard in downtown Lexington… hardest I have seen it snow in a few years here… we picked up a quick inch in our back parking lot in the last 45 minutes I would guess… looks awesome! My understanding is that there is still some heavy showers and squalls left for tonight and tomorrow… oh and the wind has picked up in the last 30 minutes also!!!
DEBBIE
Speaking of DAYS……I used to watch that in the 80’s too! I swear who ever did the background music on that show was good, cuz they used some of the most creepy background music EVER! Check this music out starting at 1:38
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja4FGBMMJ3w
Moderately snowing in Lex
Impressive looking back building beyond Louisville. Our snows tend to pile up quicker after nightfall. The flakes are heavier and bigger in Gtown now. This could be a mess when the temp bottoms out and the winds kick up.
snow falling in Knox co. roads are getting snow covered and slick, esp. the side roads that dont have 2″ of salt on them already…lol.. sad thing is Temps are at 30* right now so snow ratio’s are not gonna be a factor until we start the polar plunge!! I see teens are showing up in west ky.
Then why have busses at all? The risk doesn’t change because it’s dry. Why not cancel school because its raining out too? Sure, at some point, impeded travel becomes to great of a risk. I hardly believe 2 inches of snow impedes travel.

* HAZARDOUS TRAVEL CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED…ESPECIALLY ON
SECONDARY AND UNTREATED ROADWAYS…AND AFTER TEMPERATURES FALL
THIS EVENING BEHIND A COLD FRONT.
Therein lies the judgement. I don’t think anyone would disagree calling off school if we got 8-10 inches of snow or more, but just a couple inches?
The guy in the earlier post is correct. I don’t get a snow day at work because of a couple inches. I probably would if we got a foot.
Pouring snow in Paris-big pretty flakes! Roads were slushy-when the front blows thru I would imagine they will freeze up pretty quick! Be careful out there-but it sure is pretty!
chris just sent a tweet, that heavy bursts of snow continue across the area with 3+” likely in some areas…
nearing 3” in lex, 2.7 on my deck
Schools have insurance, yes. But if officials ignored the watches and warnings for something other than normal school travel, it could cause problems.
And not all of the roads in Kentucky are flat, straight, and narrow.
Have you ever driven a school bus? I’ll bet not. People with attitudes such as yours are what make the roads even more dangerous for our children, and their school bus drivers.
Snow falling heavily, sticking nicely, 4 inches on the ground, 20* in SE Rowan county, Craney holler
Just came home from work here in lexington. Snowing pretty hard. Side roads snow covered and slick. Nicholasville rd. Was wet and slushy. There was so much salt on nicholasville rd. This Morning it was like the country roads with gravel and ruts like my roadback home. About 2 inches here.
Scott County schools have a long weekend. I completely agree with that call. We have too many narrow, crooked, hilly roads to send busses out.
didn’t mean our area Tim ;)your gonna have an 1 1/2 inches and like it 😛
remember who we have to blame for the “under performing” storm good ole Bubba G because he canceled his trip had he went we would have had 3-5 guaranteed 😉
New post up from CB.
I would think you are responsible for one adult and not 40 children. You want to drive with 40 children in your backseat on slick roads? I would not.
Thanks for your support and informative post.
