Good evening, folks. You will be hard pressed to find an uglier weather week than the one we are wrapping up. Heavy rain continues to work across the region tonight into Saturday. The rain may cause some local stream and street flooding and that’s something to watch for.
That rain tapers off from west to east late Saturday as colder air swings in. I’m still wondering if we can get a brief mix across the mountains of southeastern Ky tomorrow evening.
The setup for early next week continues to get much of my attention. The European Model continues to spit our a healthy storm across the northeast…
That has a pocket of very cold air aloft passing on top of us Tuesday into Tuesday night. That would be a snow shower and flurry maker across central and eastern parts of the state.
The new GFS still isn’t nearly strong enough with the east coast low, but also indicates snow showers and flurries across central and eastern Kentucky…
The GFS is also keeping the normal to below normal temps around through all of next week. With a blocking high overtop that system, it really would not take very much to get that whole mess to shift farther west.
I’ve seen similar setups produce a clipper type system diving in behind a departing storm. That’s also something for us to watch for around Thursday or Friday.
Moral of the story… next week is not going to be a mild one around here.
It’s also really cool to watch the extended models showing similar results to the super long range European Model I posted last night. That lends further credence to a swift return to winter in the week leading up to Christmas. The more I look at the overall setup going forward, the more I think our region can get in on another extreme period of winter weather.
In the short-term, it’s all about the rain…

Current temperatures

A full update comes your way tonight. Take care.
Ky Mesonet sites solidly in the 50’s all around me. I’m in Valley Station southwest of Louisville Int’l Airport where by the way it’s currently 52 degrees.
My temperature is 48 with a light wind fluctuating from between NW and NE directions. Shows you how weird the weather is around my neck of the woods.
let clipper mania begin.
ty chris for all you do…i really find interest in what you do for us in posting all this weather info….like i said, i live in wayne, wva and i usually get on the internet just to watch you on the weathercast on wkyt.com and i read your blogs every day of the week……we lost a great one in huntington, wva when you left several years ago….i really mean that.
After this week, we deserve a state wide white christmas.
