Good Friday to all and to all a Merry Christmas! The BIG day is finally here and I am hoping that I have fooled Santa into thinking I have been a good boy all year long. We all know the answer to that one, but a guy can still hold out hope!
I want to say a sincere thanks to each of you for everything you do for the blog. I appreciate you all… even the haters. ![]()
Let’s keep it brief and only hit the headlines…
1. Big storm across the plains continues to shut down many, many states. This is truly an historic event unfolding for millions of people.
2. For us… rain and wind will be with us to start out Christmas. Gusts to 40 mph will be possible and those could go even higher in the mountains. Rain will be locally heavy and will taper off from west to east later today.
3. Temps will be mild to start with readings near 50. By later this afternoon and evening… thermometers will fall into the 30s as some flurries or light snow showers prevail.
4. The weekend will be much colder. Saturday will see partly sunny skies with the threat for flurries. Sunday has a decent shot to see us put a little snow on the ground as a weak impulse swings through here. Light snow will increase through the day. Highs Saturday will be in the 30s with upper 20s and low 30s for Sunday.
5. More flurries and snow showers will be possible on Monday.
6. I am still targeting the late Wednesday through Friday time period for a possible winter storm threat for this region and much of the eastern half of the country. Every model not named the GFS has been showing this for some time now and the overall pattern is strongly favorable for something to come out of the western Gulf and ride up the east coast. Do the blog a favor and laugh at anyone who uses the GFS for their forecast late next week. ![]()
7. January is shaping up to head toward something extreme in terms of both cold and snow for most of the country. December has certainly been historic and the call here is for January to try to outdo what has been going on lately.
I leave you with some cool Christmas lights because that’s how the blog rolls…
Merry Christmas and take care.
Merry Christmas and bring on some snow.
merry christmas to you cb, it may be a little late for christmas day exactly but i’d like a harsh winter with tons and tons of snow. or maybe just one 30” storm will do, hey with this pattern who knows?!it wouldn’t be a huge surprise with the massive storms this pattern keeps producing.
Merry Christmas everyone, and thanks to Chris for all the time and effort you put into this blog! Thanks to no snow in Central Ky, I made it fine from Jessamine County to Paducah for the holidays. I’d love to see some white stuff on the ground, but gotta say that being with the family tops it all. I’m staying up late, trying to make sure the kiddos are truly asleep, so that I can give Santa and the reindeer the okay to land. Hope Santa packed his rain gear and all this wind doesn’t blow him off the roof…
Merry Christmas all! There’s an inch of ice on top of the snow and raining here in Chicagoland!!! Be safe and have an awesome day filled with the joy of family and friends!
Merry Christmas Chris and bloggers. Santa just left here in Lexington, so I can go get a little sleep (more like a nap)before the kids are waking me up to see what Santa brought. Maybe we can have a white New Year since we didn’t get a white Christmas. Lets hope so. Take care all.
It’s raining in Chicagoland and a blizzard in Tulsa! WTH??
Well it looks like reguardless of the weather conditions i may well be without power on Christmas as well
All I wanted for Christmas was model continuity from the GFS, is that asking for too much? I mean, either be warm or cold but to go from extreme to extreme! I would even find a middle-of-the-road forecast plausable but when we do the extremes, the validity of the model simply decreases, which we all know is the case anyway!
Yea, can you believe it? Oklahoma City got more snow than they get in the typical Winter Season! The storm simply validates that we are in the midst of a wild and strange Weather pattern that means that all bets are off, that prior analogs are good but may not indicate to the degree to which this pattern has yet to take us this Winter. I hate to think what my area, North of Nashville, would be like if we had gotten that much snow. The average here for a Winter Season is just over 14″, though, it has been since 2003 since we have even had a plowable snowfall, hopefully, this is the year!
shouldn’t be paying attention to the GFS says Chris 😉
Merry Christmas, y’all.
My in-laws in Fort Worth had snow all day yesterday. I am happy with our weather here in Bourbon County, especially since it’s not nearly as windy as I had feared once the advisory was posted. Wind makes me crazy but our trees are barely moving.
Best of luck to all of you without power. Andy Rose, what’s causing your situation??
Wind lol i think there is still a tree resting on a line down the road from me. Its not went out out but out for 2 seconds and back on gets irritating
Merry Christmas to everyone! I trust that Santa was able to make all his deliveries last night! He brought a couple and left them here, but the unveiling will not be until tomorrow, so I am going to have a Christmas weekend, and celebrate through tomorrow evening!
Chris, thanks for all you do for us here on the blog, Looks like we might be getting a possible New Years present. But we will see!
Wishing ALL here a very MERRY CHRISTMAS! Hope your day is filled with all good things! And don’t eat too much! 😉
Check in for updates later, Chris!
It is the only model that goes out that far, unless I am unaware of another
Update from Paducah… Santa did make it to our house, apparently no problems with the wind and rain. Speaking of which, the temperature here has dropped to 32 degrees with some light snow flurries. The wind is something else as it’s just a constant roar. Guess it’ll be heading your direction during the day. Merry Christmas everyone!
Merry Christmas! I sincerely hope that no one is without power today.
Still have a few white patches of snow visible in my yard and on the hillside behind my house, even with the warm temps.
Wind is picking up and clouds are moving in, the temp in East Point is 46.
I hope everyone is happy, warm, and safe with their family and friends.
Thanks to CB for all of his extra work on the blog and for keeping us informed.
hey all I LOVE EACH AND EVER ONE OF U!! well there 1 i dont but oh well.
already been eating and getting ready to up to my BRO house and watch thwe neices and nephews go wild.
Merry Christmas to all the blogging family…from a balmy 55* in downtown Barbourville, and the wind is a roaring…
merry christmas everyone! one can already see the 12z gfs coming out of it’s funk and shaping into line with what the other models have. these upgrades the gfs got make little difference the model is still bad.
those who only follow the gfs models and no others will be in shock and awe seeing this late this week storm fire up which the euro model has had for days now.

so what does this pathetic model have for is Mitch and what do the others have ??
wind is really getting up, and clouds are rolling in more, but temp is still at 52 degrees. I can hear my wind chimes out in the back jingling constantly, and the inflatables in my neighbor’s yard are rockin’ and rollin’!
So, Mitch, you see a possible New Years present as well, I guess? Hope everyone is having a wonderful day with family and friends. I guess since we are actually doing ours tomorrow afternoon, when everyone gets home, this is “technically” sort of a two day Christms Eve for me, huh? 😉
Hey Mitch or Shane or Chris what models are supporting 45 degrees tomorrow? I thought it was suppose to be cold but JKL is calling for sunny and 45 tomorrow is this right? Based on prior track record i am doubting it just trying to get some outdoor work planned for tomorrow
Merry Christmas to all.It is very windy with temp at 46 degrees.I bet tommmorow will be cold.Coffee have a great Christmas weekend!Chris thanks for all you do.
12z cmc puts some snow on the ground by thursday from this and the nogaps has light snow wednesday. rest of 12z guidence still coming in.
Merry Christmas Everyone! A big thank you to all of you. I enjoy reading everyone’s comments and opinions. Chris–thank you for letting that happen and putting all the work into this blog. You are truly appreciated. With that said, we really wish that you would come back home.
no 35-40 east and near 35 west with more clouds. this fits in well both mos and raw guidence. with 850 mb temps near -10 even with a little sun that forecast of 45 will likley be off a bit.
I’ll really get after it tommorow in terms of details of the storm as this is a brief break in the action from christmas.
12z jma and euro looked favorable as well for some wintry weather wed-fri, that should do it for the models back to chirstmas!!!
Wanted to say Merry Christmas to all the bloggers and to Mr. Bailey. Thanks for having the forum for the weather fans throughout the region. This is an interesting site as proof was shown last week where we had very little snow here in Georgetown, but 200 miles east I77 was buried. We enjoy reading everyone’s thoughts regarding upcoming events.
A nice theme could be added though-Chris Bailey’s blog:”Where the big one is always just a week away.”
Merry Christmas to all and I have eat to much will back to eating guys have a safe christmas hope you all got what you wanted.
Merry Christmas to ALL!
As always, we have a snowstorm “NEXT WEEK” its not on the GFS yet, but it will be soon to flip flop again.. “NEXT WED/THUR” to be exact.
Since this is a slow time, figured I would add a CLASSIC.. reminds me of Bubba’s diary! 😉
Diary of the snow shoveler
Merry Christmas!
As far as next week, I seem to remember the same stuff this time last week;) Another old school system, so pick your poison central KY-
1. Ice storm
2. Mix & a miss
Put me down for option two;)
Reading the trail of posts here, from one big event to the next is like reading a Greek tragedy. Compelling stuff:):(
Of course, based on our eleven year weather history- Have the librarian file it in the fiction section;)
Temps did not behave as advertised by anybody in Knox County they didn’t start dropping here till the sun was going down so i wonder what that means for tomorrow
not surprising thanks Mitch
I was bored and looking back and snowfall data for Lex. I wanted to see what the track record was for snowless Decembers and the winters that followed. Most/but NOT all, were snowless winters with a couple of inches here and there. It was interesting to see a few winters had hardly any snow in Dec or Jan, but Feb and Mar were VERY snowy. Example: winter of 1959/60 had .8 in Nov, 1.8 Dec, .3 Jan, and THEN Feb had 16.4 and Mar had 19.5 (seasonal total 38.8)
Now, Rolo, there is a Grandma that’s gonna pinch your ear if you start bein’ a meanie during the HoliDaze. Child, you are better,n that! Just let the know-nuthin’ son of a gun freeze up and face the new year that way. Billy-Rolo, best be listenin’ to me!
Chris I love the serene scene of new fallen snow down home on the farm! I’m hoping for something like that sometime during the next weeks.
Also…Wishing all bloggers a very blessed Christmas Evening. Happy bargain shopping this weekend!
You can see the SNOWDOME pretty good on this one as of yesterday’s snow cover.
USA Snow Cover
Heres hoping everyone had a Merry Christmas.
As for New Years Day I think for central Ky. significant winter precip is unlikely.

Merry Christmas from down south!!
Merry Christmas and happy new year!
