Good Sunday to one and all. The major winter storm that blasted the state has left one heck of a mark. Thousands of people remain without power after close to a foot of heavy wet snow fell across parts of the region. Travel was a nightmare as hundreds, if not thousands, were stranded for a long period of time as the snow came down fast and furious.
I wrote a blog at the end of November titled Old Man Winter Will Own You! detailing what I thought would become a very wintry period that would give the naysayers a dose of reality. That happened this week as the storm was way underplayed by many. This is not the winter to mail it in… old man winter is in no mood to mess around so you had better bring your A game or he will own you.
Let’s move on to what is going on with this active pattern as we head into Christmas week.
We will continue to see some light snows across the area early today before we break out into mostly cloudy skies. Our attention will quickly turn to a clipper moving in this evening into early Monday. Here is a radar to track the snows…
The NAM is saying the best chance for a light snowfall would be more toward central into southeastern Kentucky..
A big storm will crank up in the days leading up to Christmas and should bring a wide variety of weather to us and that is something we will be talking much more about with an update coming later today. Have a great Sunday and take care.

IM FIRST, MUHA HA HA HA HA HA!!! I DID IT!!! GREATEST DAY OF MY LIFE!!!
morning bloggers! I’m waiting for the Christmas Storm discussion!! Louisville NOAA off the bandwagon…of course. So what are your takes? Give me something to read and cling to today! Have a good one guys!
Good morning, Chris and everyone.
Chris, if you hadn’t given us the heads up about the storm, we wouldn’t have been as prepared. Thank you for telling us in time to get ready for it!
You do a great job!
well best be dreaming of a RAINYYYY Christmas.
the GFS has it moving back thru MO and CHICAGO, and it been consitant last 3 runs.
other models also support this.
so yea it sucks no white christmas, I be worried bout flooding if u live arpound water. sorry guys and gals.
yea it could change but I doubt that very much as we are only 4 days out and the model runs have been showing the same thing.
Anyone on here who lives near London/Corbin? Having to go there from Lexington today and I would like a road condition report. Thanks.
Morning Chris, and everyone. We got a little coating of snow overnight, but just barely enough to get the ground and the rooftops white. Temp is sitting at 33 here in my part of the world.
Renee, living in Somerset, you should have no problems getting to London from here. but they DID get more snow than we did, and I don’t know what kind of melting took place there yesterday.
Chris lookking forward to the next update from you on the Christmas storm. Have familt trvelling all over the place from here to Lexington, and Ohio, and London. If it decides to be bad, plans might have to be tweaked a little bit! 😉
We all know the drill. It will rain. We might see some leftover flakes on the backside , MAYBE. Nothing to see here at least in Somerset. I guess I’m glad old man winter has not owned us here. At least in terms of power outages etc. That is something to be very thankful about. Thanks for the blog Chris.
It gets so old with your flip-flopping. Just yesterday you were saying how we would get snow, now let the flip-flopping begin. Then YOU demand an explanation on why the snow turned into rain on Friday and kept demanding. I figure you would have the answer.
Didn’t Chris say in his blog to be ready but you doubt him? Heck, I admit I was wrong, which you never do. I said it would be rain and you know what, I was dead wrong. It’s not hard to admit you steering, but when you flip flop so much, everyone takes it for what it’s worth. I guarantee you don’t win as much as you say you do betting because you second guess everything you do.
More snow on the ground this morning in my part of Lexington than what the main system dropped Friday and Saturday morning!
Thanks a lot!
Coffee, where’s your website. I’d love to read your stuff, too. I am a casual writer, and I love to read other peoples work!
Same here Bert, in Frankfort. I’m looking forward to the clipper over night and I’m still crossing my fingers for more waffeling!! Bring on the white Christmas!
Additional 1″1/2 fell last night in eastern Clark Co. total of around 4″ Anyone think the models are underestimating the amount of snow we have on the ground? This should help pull the Low farther south as long as the snow will stay on the ground until then!!!!
very light snow and flurries this morning, good a coating on top of yesterdays snow last night..roads looks fine though.. still got a good COMPACTED 3+ in MOSt of knox co.. I was in Middlesboro yesterday down in Bell CO. and they had a WHOPPING 8-10″ down in that area, and most of it was still there, but while I was there it had warmed up enough to rain during the daytime hrs. yesterday..
So this storm is in the past and in the RECORD BOOKS IN A LOT OF PLACE.. especially up the eastern seaboard..PLaces like D.C. got over 15″, and a foot plus around N.Y. city,
a lot of Va. got over a foot…
So I guess we wait now and HOPE for the Christmas storm to ACT RIGHT..for snow for CHristmas…
got the same exact thing in versailles as the bluegrass airport on both parts .4 fri night and .8 last night. that’s unusual.
watch that burst of snow in Iowa that tonight’s clipper if it falls apart a bit coatings tonight if it holds form inch amounts will be more common.
couldnt believe biggest snow in PHILLY since 1909.
We had over 2 Feet up here in southern WV. It is crazy up here right now.
That’s a lot of snow! Hope you and your family are safe and have power.
CRAZY OR WHAT ??…I dont know for sure, but it sure looks like the CHRISTMAS storm on the 06z run of the GFS is bringing a squall line of storms in here for CHristmas eve and early Christmas morning, before MAYBE turning to flurries late in the day Christmas…thats sure what it looks like to me…YUCK…
Man, what a turn around a couple days makes…last week it was a possible white christmas, now most models are saying wet/sloppy christmas..can you imaging RAIN up the coast on CHristmas after getting 2 ft. of snow…Y-U-C-K…
Same here.. but on the plus side, glad we have 4 solid days of flip flopping to a SUPERSTORM! 😉
And the Christmas storm is starting to shift SE now… Keep going baby http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/12/images/gfs_pcp_090l.gif
check out some of the photos of this storm.
Monster Storm Reaches Southern New England
Latest GFS has pushed it 400-500 miles back SE… Keep doing snow dances guys http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/12/images/gfs_pcp_096l.gif
Still a lakes cutter, but the SE trend is starting…… WE can hope right?
if you all need proof the snowdome exists…take a look at the current snow cover in north america.
http://wave3.typepad.com/.a/6a00d83452060169e20128766cf1ef970c-pi
I agree.. the easterly trend has begun.
Boyle County- 34* light rain…………….Barely more than a trace in the eastern part of this county for the whole weekend. The temp never dropped solidly to freezing except for a split second this morning. Five miles sw in Danville proper had at least a little over half an inch total thru the weekend.
Christmas continues to look more wet than white. My “harsh and snowy” winter continues. Lol, in reality I saw more wintry weather than this the several years I lived in sw Florida back in the 80’s.
http://stormtracker.yolasite.com/michaels-kentucky-snowcast.php
It very well could, the more cold we get in here the better…. So hope this clipper overachieves guys.
Looks like it collasped on the eastern side?
hey gang…J.B. at accuweather just posted a new video on his blog this morning talking about the CHristmas storm..he seems to think that a Low will track to the lakes…but not be as near as strong as the models are saying, and then energy gets transferred to a low on the coast, and then something after that coming out of the gulf…in his words…lol..instead of ONE BIG DOG for Christmas, its a bunch of PUPPIES!!…so his take on it is that instead of 1 big storm, there will be a weaker low to the lakes, one coming up the east side of the mnts.. ( 🙂 ) then something coming up out of the gulf prob. right after Christmas…@@@@<<
O.K. LAYMENS TERMS…
23-24th…poss. snow/ice to rain…:(
25-26th…rain to snow (POSS.) 🙂
26-28th…something roaring outt of the gulf…(SNOW)! (MAYBE!!!)..:):):)
Renee, I hope this isn’t too late for your trip here. Roads are clear here in London. You shouldn’t have any problem.
There’s been nothing harsh and snowy here yet either. We’ve had 2 snowfalls of less than an inch so far. It’s been chilly, but manageable. Even Scott Co hasn’t missed a day of school yet, and they close for rain. The big donut hole in the snowcover map posted above tells it all, the dome is alive and well in central KY.
That sounds promising…
Boyle County- 35 balmy degrees….Looks like the icing chances on Christmas for the Virginia and N.C. foothills is increasing some. I still dont see any reason yet to get excited for most of Kentucky.
http://stormtracker.yolasite.com/michaels-kentucky-snowcast.php
Susan, click on Coffeelady’s name, it will take you to her website. It’s some good reading!
Canadian follows 12z gfs and moves it farther east, the low goes right through eastern Missouri now
were just know getting into winter. I dont ever remember any snow in december for kentucky to amount to anything.
it has drizzled all day in Boyle Co.
I am without power, and the electric company is now saying Dec 27 before it is back on. I don’t know why, because it isn’t that bad out. Oh well. I won’t be able to check often, I won’t leave home. Right now I’m at my daughter’s, so I had to check in.
As much as I love the white stuff…I think I’ve had enough.
Let it rain, let it snow…whatever…just let me have my electricity…it’s cold!!!!
christmas storm will have a midwest low that transfer to a se low up coast similatr to this past storm by the time we get to end of week. I think we might be living right.
Bstardi says something on these lines.
HEY BILLYGOAT IM TIRED OF U BUDDY, I READ THE MODELS, I DONT FLIP FLOP OLE BOY. I TRY AND GIVE UPDATES UNTIL THE RREAL WEATHER MAN LIKE CB and shane and mitch, wxman get back.
really why are u such as punk, I been good to you, but if u dont shut up I will have ir IP ADDRESS BANNED!!
look like all of central and east ky going get a nice snowfall from clipper, nice looking radar retuyrns coming this way.
Not sure of your location, but there were a lot of people who were left without power, its going to take a while to try and get everyone’s power back up and the mess cleaned up that was left behind.
1” overnight here. clipper to our nw looks like it may have potential to do better than that. 1.5” on the season now!!!!!
hey rolo
what about london and corbin area. and also are you talking about tonight
I see NWS in charleston has issued winter weather adv. for their area, including ashland….looks like Chris Bailey has this clipper in his hat..LOL…although his twitter update says a general 1-2 in the region, this will probably stay to my north and east, but you never know…
Most of what we get will be rain or mix and then snow showers for later this week. For most of KY, December is mainly more bark than bite, but at least the east part of the state got some big snow action.
Central KY remains a fence.
radar returns look kinda impressive with the clipper headed south, its moving quite well to what chris was showing for NAM snowfall map..or at least it looks to be moving in that direction….you all in Lex. area that missed out, it looks to be headed right at you….so smile .. 🙂
http://www.intellicast.com/National/Radar/Current.aspx?animate=true
Yep, Tim…looks to be headed straight for Lou. & pts. S/SE (i.e;ME!;)) We had a light dusting in Bardstown when I woke up this a.m., all gone now, but it’s still ICY COLD out, the air has moistened up…
WHO KNOWS what we all might end up with before the end of the week?!;) We all seem to live for/depend on those models and all, so far out…why, heck!?- You can’t even really depend on what the Wx dudes even say right up until it actually DOES it…(lol..FOND recall of the Jan.’94 storm here…calling for less than 1″ in the Lou. viewing area during the game Sun. afternoon-wake up next morning to thundersnow, 16″….??!LOL!)
Seems Ole Man Winter doing a pretty decent job Tearing Down the Snow Dome in Central KY!!! Still hoping for snow for Christmas I just hate a cold rain!!!!!!
im so happy we may get a little snow…i was so dissapointed this weekend lol
maybe 2-4 inches in the region if it goes south enough
Rolo your idol threats don’t bother me. I’m a grown man. I admit when I’m wrong and I was DEAD wrong. But anyway, sometimes the truth hurts, huh?
I don’t know about you, but to me it seems our chances of a white Christmas in CKY are rapidly approaching 0%. I’m not trying to be a party pooper or anything, I’m just going by our almost 12 year history of miss after miss. This last storm really solidified the existence of the Dome in my mind. Don’t know what it is about our location in CKY, but it just seems to be darn near impossible for us to get a big snow here anymore…:( Our dusting has now but completely melted away, temp 34.5…
I don’t want to get hopes up, but heres my 2 cents at the moment.. HPC precip map has the Christmas storm cutting thru Paducah, so I think theres a big chance that the models will have it more on a SE track in the next couple of days. Anybody see that?
ok i’m all aboard the bad winter train i haven’t been without power this long since the ice storm SE KY dealt with some yrs ago and yes i remember the poor folks in central and northern KY earlier this yr went lots longer. Time to find some firewood
its right over WXman’s place LOL what he gets for predicting a warmer and dryer December 😉
Hi Tammy. Where in Boyle County? Up on the knobs? If so you were the few in central kentucky that benefited from a little elevation….
well at least its moved some northward maybe with some of these big mouths on here hey will push it further north 😀
sorry about ruining the game for ya yesterday
Portion of JMK from 355 PM EST SUN DEC 20 2009
“RAIN CHANCES WILL INCREASE WEDNESDAY NIGHT BUT BEST CHANCES (LIKELY
POPS) WILL BE HELD ON THURSDAY INTO THURSDAY NIGHT AS THE WARM FRONT
POKES NORTHWARD INTO THE TENNESSEE/CUMBERLAND VALLEY FOLLOWED BY A FRONTAL PASSAGE LATE THURSDAY NIGHT/FRIDAY MORNING. THIS APPEARS TO
BE ANOTHER VERY DYNAMIC SYSTEM… SIMILAR TO BUT NOT AS STRONG AS
OUR HIGH WIND EVENT ON THE 9TH. GUSTY WINDS ARE THUS A GOOD BET WITH
THE SYSTEM. THE OTHER POSSIBLE IMPACT… FLOODING… SEEMS TO BE A
LESSER THREAT AS THE SYSTEM LOOKS PROGRESSIVE ENOUGH TO LIMIT QPF TO
LESS THAN AN INCH.”
IF this is an 90% rain event.. take the snow melt + rain and you have major flooding in eastern Ky for sure! Hopefully Chris will give his take in his next update.
http://www.hpc.ncep.noaa.gov/qpf/p120i12.gif
One huge problem in my neck of the woods is the temp has to stay at or below freezing more than 5 minutes to get any accumulation with light snow. Right now 35* in eastern Boyle.
oops, think its JKL for Jackson NWS.. lol 😉
Unfortunately rain looks to be a safe bet, at least in the areas with no snow cover. I’d love to be proven wrong, but…
Jan 1994……I remember we had Winter storm warnings in Western NC, Upstate SC for lots of snow. Me, being a weather freak, was glued to the weather channel; looking at the radar, I noticed the entire state of Alabama was covered in moisture, but it was moving DUE north, NOT northeast. I watched that storm move STRAIGHT up into KY, and we (in western NC) got NONE of the moisture. I remember seeing shots from a helicopter over Lexington and Louisville on the news and they got DUMPED on. I was soooo PSED! I wish I could see the maps as to how that storm evolved!
Now boys – back off and go to neutral corners. With something like this, everyone can be an expert, a flip flopper a neutral observer… When does changing one’s “forecast” based on latest conditions become “flip flopping”, that’s the question. The debate is all part of the fun.
My gut tells me the snow dome will soon be destroyed! When? Hopefully soon. If Brevard got 10 inches, Asheville 17…Which they haven’t seen that type of storm in (clears throat) 12 YEARS!!!!! Then maybe weather patterns are coming back around 🙂 Let’s hope so 🙂
Here is what I found on the Jan 1994 snowstorm for Ky snow totals, but can’t find the model run on it.
Jan 14, 1994 Snowstorm
OOOOOH Not an IP Address Ban. Rolo, you are such a moron. Do you really think that works?
Chris, go ahead and ban my IP Address. I think you have already done it about 5 times, isn’t that right, MARSHA? But,go ahead, do it again. I’m going to prove a point. Only you morons that don’t know anything about technology are scared of being banned.
Tonights clipper does look as if it will at least bring below freezing temps.
How did i get into this?
Sorry forgot to put my name in And also I don’t care if Chris bans you or not you can say what you like I’m going to read and comment on here when I want. If you choose to act like a child than that’s fine with me. Rolo we love so
Rolo I think you and I are the target of this person so we need to let him act like a child we need to pay no attention to him at all we can do just remember what the little train said I think I can I think I ……
clipper holding it’s own, hpc is likely using the gfs ensembles which last i checked were farther se with the chirstmas storm, so a correction in that direction is possibile with the 00z runs.
That would be nice…lol
I sure hope that becomes the trend Bernie! 🙂
so mitch are you saying the 00z runs could push it even further southeast??
the weak low will be just to hour west, with ther big low taking over e/se riding northesrt christmas,
look likew northern and north east ky get snow tonite.
WWADVISORY UP THERE.
Mark…lol…THAT was about the BIGGEST “MISS” around here far as forecasting goes that I’ve EVER seen…God’s Honest TRUTH!!!?
I could tell you a “STORY” on that one, but not HERE…??! (Take up too much space…) Let’s just say that here in the Lou. area, Belski had it RIGHT the “first time”, then he started slacking off as the week before went by, and by the time it got here, I don’t think ANYONE was prepared for it…???! To THIS DAY, whenever I “remind” him of it…lol..JB REFUSES to admit his “wrongdoing”…(and I admit…it’s poss. that HE had it “right”, but by the time Sun. afternoon came around, I think it might’ve been “LMK’s” fault…??!-I try not to lay blame on any one person/org….but THAT one was ALL MESSED UP! If you’d like my actual (truthful..lol) ‘account” of it, let me know…I can “detail” it like nobody else, I’m SURE!:)
DEB
That’s ok 🙂 I remember your stories from the past blogs about it. Wasn’t there a MAJOR ice storm that same winter? I know you guys had a terrible one (either 94 or 96) that was almost as bad as the 2003 ice storm, in addition to all that snow ?? Oh, and let’s not forget Jan 96 had a huge snow as well :), oh, and of course feb 98….
rare rare rare, when was the last time the entire state of ky as a whole got a major snow? typically the state gets split into differing sectors of a storm but this is an interesting map!
rolo a lot of people will get a little bit of snow tonight! the NWS is delusional 😉
Yes, first week of March 1994. Not nearly as bad as 2003. More like last January. At the time, it was the worst I had ever seen.
It sure does look like that solid wall of precip is starting to break up as it hits the far western edge of the Central KY snowdome.
hvy snow shower moving south of louisville moving torward harrodsburg and richmond in the next hour.
looks like the clipper is gaining a little strength.
http://www.intellicast.com/Local/WxMap.aspx?location=USKY1198
intellicast’s radar is much nicer than accuweather’s
Thanks for the info. Made it there and back with no problems. Snowed, iced, rained in several spots, but coming home was easy.
No snow as of yet in Lexington.
I am with you Billy.
They do tend to flip flop and just want the blog thunder from everyone. Or just the few.
Thanks
now its weakening…great
just sharing………..something from Reed Timmer
http://www.tornadovideos.net/component/content/article/36-tornadoes/1098-huge-storm-to-pound-the-central-us-this-week
Flurries in Marehaven… NW Lexington…
Looks like NoKY is going to get white again… Good for Perfect North… bad for my backyard!
Thanks for the nice words, Renee! I love it when people stop by to read my blog! Please leave me a comment, when you do stop by! I also like suggestions, too.
Evening all. I hope everyone has had a good Sunday. We certainly had two great services at church, centering on the Christmas story, of course.
Centering on the weather, our pretty snow is all but gone here. Uptown, they have snow on the ground still. I think some o fit actually fell while we were IN church this morning! Clipper looks like snow is right on top of me, but nothing happening outside. guess the atmosphere is too dry for it to hit the ground.
Chris, looking forward to your thoughts on the next system for the holiday period. Need to know whethter to get out the high snow boots, or the high water waders! 😉
Have a good night, all!
Oops! Do I feel like a nut! typed in the wrong name! sorry about that. Should have said Vickie, and Susan, too!
Chelle…
You’re a Reed fan, huh??!;) 😀
Knows his “stuff”…that’s fer sure…
Well thank goodness we just got our power back on late this evening! Living without electricity is for the birds! Anyway, spring couldn’t come soon enough for me. Wait, did I just say that? LOL
this looks like a coating event for northern ky I doubt anyone sees the 1-2 chris has the radar returns don’t support it.
Weeelll…:(
Only got a light “dusting” outta that Clipper…watch the radar and see how t “narrows” once it hits Nelson Co…
And, some of you think YOU are in the midst of the “Dome”….
HAH!;)
gfs moving toward what the euro track has been for several runs way to the west with hvy rain thunder and flooding for christmas storm the grinch and the heatmizer want to invite you all to there christmas party as they track thunderstorms across southern portions of the state. I’ll personally pass. surprising we will end up with a lakes cutter with negative nao, ao and a postive pna.
It def looks like it getter weak as it heads out of louisville towards lex…. must be loosing its punch. I think we’re gonna get a coating at most in Lex.
I agree,it looks like the bulk of it will be passing us by to the north (again).
Light snow in Marehaven… Bedtime. Sleep well bloggers!
Large snowflakes with minor accum being observed on Louisville streaming cam. Light snow also in Boyle County with temp just a few points above 32*
Yeah I like him o.k……..he had this on facebook. and HE DOES know what he is talking about! lol 🙂
Central KY, think MIX for this week and do not expect much of the total precipitation to be snow.
Central KY IS the fence.
You had better pray I dont ever meet you in person you!
The GFS is starting to develope a secondary low moving up the east coast….This might be a good xmas wknd afterall…..
Let ‘er rip, Baby! Can we have 1 white Christmas, please?
You guys arent missing much with this clipper in NKY. Its more of a tease than anything. VERY light snow, if you can even call it that. Coating at best.
nice work. That was a spectacular article, need more great work like this out there.
Had already seen something like this
