Good evening everyone. It is game on for our winter storm and it’s good to see everybody else jumping on the snow train. Winter storm warnings have been extended farther west as we suspected and for good reason. The New runs of the GFS and NAM are both much wetter and farther west and match up nicely with our snowfall forecast which will remain the same…
Far southeastern Kentucky will see more than a foot of snow out of this! Snowfall rates of greater than 2″ per hour will be possible this evening through the overnight. Looking at the dynamics… I wonder if someone can hear a rumble of thunder across the south or east!!! Wow!
Here is a radar to track the snows…
Current Temps
Web cams from across the region that I hope update….

Help us out by continuing to posting the weather where you are. I will have more updates through the evening so check back. Take care.

Currently around 3 inches on the ground with moderate snow continuing.
Still waiting here in Clark County
can someone post the new nam and gfs????
CB,
You might want to tell the Lexington weather people, since there is only a weather advisory for this area. Wild.
NW Lex. Masterson Station:
38°
A very cold rain..
…
north Jessamine county … 36.7 cold rain .. Really want to see new runs!!! what are you guys thinking???
Hey Shanks, I didn’t see your post earlier. What about us living close together and didn’t even know it! And your not kidding about the doorknob! lol Everything is covered here too
Dorton Hill in Pike County is closed. Cars, trucks, campers everywhere!!!
Oooh Chris. Your making me wetter too.
Hey, when did they get electricity in Harlan? LOL.
We no this isn’t Marsha..
Damn shame they let children play with computers…
Grow up..!!!
…
No, it is a chubby rain;) Bowfinger movie joke:)
Cold rain here too. Maybe that is why it is just an advisory;)
Snow is laying on the ground on Island Creek close to Pikeville. The temperature dropped quick. Luckily, kids from school got home just before all of this started. Can’t wait to break out the new sled that I have had for a couple of years now.
Lucky that the school kids got home just in time for the switch to snow.
T.G. just raised our totals in my area to 4-8!
Snow covered roads in Corbin with the snow still falling. I’m terrible with measurements, but I would say a couple of inches thus far. The snow was mixed with sleet for a while, but now seems to be all snow again.
First off…get the little Trolls offa the board. I’m ready to hand out the spankin’s!
Half hour ago, I was thinking, “this isn’t lookin’ so great…it’s moving back East”….?! THEN…NOW…??!-
Snow is building back in towards me…3 counties away…ok..4…sorry…;)
I can STILL see this thing moving more westerly as the night plays out….?! Any comments (Aye or Nay) are welcomed!:)
Roads are awful here, plenty of wrecks. Stay home!
nothing but cold rain in morgan co
Just went back out and measured (again) and there is a good, solid INCH on the ground! Snow has tapered off some, just a light snow at the moment. Bring back the fluffy flakes!!!
Chris I did not write this someone has been using my name…..
Yes they are bad. My road has been salted(Corbin), but snow covered. They are passable, but everyone is driving very slowly
Vinny thanks I would never say something like that this person also had a comment on the last post that was not me…….
That’s in line with what Jackson is calling for this area through tomorrow night.
Thanks, CB, for the update. It is snowing huge flakes of snow right now in Johnson County at the Floyd line. Beautiful!!!! Looks like lace
falling from the sky!
Chris can you please remove this someone might thing this was really me…..
It’s on the way, Eric.
Estimates of 100 or more cars stranded on Dorton hill, US 23 in Pike County.
temperature just wont drop in Lexington.
Beautiful! The trees are hanging full of beautiful snow! Tomorrow morning, it’s gonna be a winter wonderland! Wow, is it ever white out there! It looks like a couple of inches at least on the ground and it’s still coming down! Woo-hoo! I’ve found my inner-child again tonight, lol.
BALILEY ITS RAINING IN MANCHESTER THERE NOWAY ER GOING SEE THAT MUCH SNOW, GOT HEAVY SNOW AND HS 2 INCHES NOW ITS RAINING.LOL
Rain Rain go away! 🙁 raining now here in manchester.
Pouring the snow big flakes here in Morgan Co!!!!!!!
Roads impassable here now.
Coming up on 4 inches with a burst of heavier snow.
Temperature increased nearly 1 degree in lexington in last 1/2 hour. Raining on Man O War/Alumni
I haven’t seen snowflakes this big in a long time…I think everyone on the snow map will get some snow. It rained here first, too. It’s not that cold, either…34 degrees.
somebode please explaoin its 32 degrees and HEvy rIN IN MANCHESTER all the snow melted away, u tellme.
this has blown my mind, it snowed 4 inches if it been snow, even now whwen it switch back it tke 1 hour to get ground ready for it to stick again
Rolo, Big flakes here in Knox. It is probably heading your way.
Snowed, covered the ground, and now raining again in Prestonsburg. Talk about shoddy luck.
the kids didnt make it home in time at my house my little boys bus went into the ditch everyone is ok thank god but the pike county board should have dismissed i live at stopover near phelps.. roads are awful here we have 4 inches of snow
I think it may be raining here in Corbin. Roads not as covered now.
At least you seen some snow on the ground before the change…
All I’ve seen is rain, but a whole lot of moisture building out west… will be here once the cold arrives..!!!
…
wow! check out this cam from near beech mountain in NC http://www.highcountrywebcams.com/webcameras_Beech_Charlies.htm
Temp has gone down from 38 to 36 in last fifteen minutes in Lex per mesonet. Maybe we’re on our way.
Be positive those around you will be positive. Be negative those around you will be negative. Choice positive and positive things will happen. Love my snow.
Still not looking good in the cold rain capital of the world: been 37 with a steady rain for at least a couple of hours here in south Jessamine! Come on, its 32 in Somerset!
still no explanation, it was supposed to satay snow right, its 33 dgrees and was HEAVY SNOW AND POOF RAIN FOR LAST HOUR, ITS A busat SO WE DESERVE A EXPLANATION.
I topped Island Creek Hill in Manchester at 4:30 p.m.. Heavy snow. The heavy snow ended at 5:00 p.m. and we have had heavy rain in Manchester since that time and up until now. I drove the 5 miles from downtown Manchester to my home 15 minutes ago. Heavy rain the whole way and 33 deg.
Well don’t complain it’s been 32 here in Bath CO for many hours and have seen nothing but rain!
Ah, Rolo, that just weather. I have no explanation for it. It was getting with it at 4:30 p.m., heavy snow and 34, and the temp. actually went down, and it switched to rain. Don’t understand it.
still no explanation, it was supposed to satay snow right, its 33 dgrees and was HEAVY SNOW AND POOF RAIN FOR LAST HOUR, ITS A busat SO WE DESERVE A EXPLANATION.
i guess they doint want tto admit a bust.
I love CB and he knows it but WXMAN,SHANE OR SOMEBODY NEEDS TO TELL ME WHY THIS HAS HAPPENED
LOL!
Yes, but do you still love us all?;)
Man, you need to stop taking those diet pills..!!! lol
The night is young, the winter has not even begun yet….RELAX… lol
…
I think you need to callllmmm down.
2 inches of snow and still snowing at Dorton in Pike county.
Since the LOW obviously is WELL east of us, aren’t we on the cold side of this storm? Where is the cold air? Are we waiting for a cold front to pass? Don’t the fronts come from the west? The snow line is heading from the east to the west SLOWLY
Surely it will start snowing again tonight.
Madison County – Berea
Starting to mix good
35°
I’ve read others get the “moderation” but I’ve gotten it the last three times I’ve tried to post and the messages never got posted so TESTING, TRYING 🙂
THey have now issued a winter storm warning for the lex area
I’m SOO confused! Not to look like an idiot to you guys who know much more than I do about how the atomosphere works, but are we waiting for a front to come through for the temps to drop somewhat? It looks as if the cold is working from the east to west? Or is there no front at all and we are just waiting for dynamic cooling?
Rain at my house in northern clay. The radar is still showing snow though. I figure it will change back soon. If not, I guess I’ll still be disappointed.
This system sure is taking its sweet time working back west as all we have here in Richmond is cold rain….again. How can the cold air be south and east of us…doesn’t make sense
Calm down, Rolo. The night isn’t over yet.
Two plus inches ++ in Knott CO at Softshell. Roads are terrible!! Just slid trying to come up hill three times!!! Be careful out there. Snow is still pouring
Temps here are actually going up. Once again WAA wins again. Lexington will be lucky to get even a trace.
Figure if it were cold enough for snow we’d be in a huge dry slot!
About 20 minutes of big heavy snow flakes, now back to rain for the last hour.
Where did you see a Winter storm warning for lexington?
we’ve had heavy snow since it turned to snow around 3.. about 3 inches in downtown barbourville, but you get out of down town and there is close to 5 maybe 6 in spots…
just as the models cut the christmas eve into the lakes there trying to gio back to the southern track just as fast. cold rain here in versailles as well.
Imagine if this had been all snow…
Wow, just wow. If this thing turns out be a rainmaker..and it’s looking that way for a bunch of us, then we are talking the biggest bust in a Long time.
It is raining Shawna! Whats up with that?! Speak up Chris please!
Yep! Rain here too. Lots of cooold rain.
Perhaps a similar situation like freezing rain conditions? Warm loft air? Should be snowing, but cooold Bowfinger chubby rain.
Bowfinger is one of the last funny Eddie Murphy movies:) Actually, it IS the last one.
it is still snowing in letcher co.
Well, friends, if it’s ANY consolation WHATSOEVER…??!
Steady rain with SLEET BALLS & a wee bit of “flurrying” here in Bardstown @ a temp of 37°…that snow line is still digging in from the E/SE, still coming from the NW out of IL, and now I see something building from the NE out of OH…
BRIIIINNNNGGG IIIITTTT!!!!
(Gosh, I hope this doesn’t suddenly make a sharp cut & nothing happens, because there’s nothing worse than having your hubby make fun of you for your meteorological (half-ass) skills…lol!;)
I’m afraid to go look outside now. I don’t want to see rain! Just north of Hazard. I had to go out and sweep snow off my satellite a little while ago, and it was snow.
Pouring the snow now in Pikeville temp 33,its so pretty
No such thing. She got that from the things in the upper right corner of the screen on 18, 27 and 36. They all put up the most serious condition in their viewing area, which includes many counties that are under the warning. Then the stations will run a crawl to address Lex metro. Crawls all say WWA.
What disappointment!!! Was watching the most beautiful snow flakes earlier and now all rain. So bummed. Will it turn back to snow in the Corbin area? Please, someone who knows enlighten me.
still snowing here in Barbourville, it has been ALL SNOW SINCE AROUND 3..or so…
downtown..about 2-3″
out of town 4″ easy with maybe 5″ in spots roads are snowcovered, just took alittle drive around the county to see..winter wonderland to say the least…
Rolo…I noticed that the weather channel was saying there was freezing rain in london…I dont want that junk!!!! I just hope it stays all snow here…
32*
light to moderate snow
knox co..
I’ve read this wonderful website now for a couple of years. Does that make me a “veteran”. Maybe, web wise. Coming from a true military veteran, my advise to ROLO, grow up man;) My wife is a hot blooded Italian born and raised in Brooklyn, her emotions are real, your emotions are childish and silly as you write them man. You seem to have a grasp on weather basics, but you dilute that with your rants and “flip flopping”. Calm down a little dude and stop trying to impress everyone. I want to know your opinion, not your rant…
Aint one. We have one of them there “Winter Advisories”. Based on current results, might be the correct call;)
The night is still young though- HEY! Did I just hear you laugh, Mr. Snowdome? 😉
Rolo needs to take his meds or buy a lap dog to calm his nerves;)
Wow! This night may be full of 😉
I see a dry slot on the radar in Center Tennessee…looks to be heading north towards Wayne and Pulaski Co. Isn’t this great
Getting close to 4 inches here. Huge snowflakes coming down. I’ll have some pictures soon. 🙂
Oh well. Long day for me,and I have to get up early for a trip to Louisville. Still in awe at how this thing held so much promise then busted big time for *some* of us.
Love how everyone is just freaking out about the rain and calling it a bust. It was suppose to start as rain and then change over to snow during the evening. It is just now evening and there is a lot of moisture and the upper-level system moving into the area. It will snow all night and everyone will wake up happy.
Rolo…its called karma. Calm down, be positive and it will go back to snow.
lightening here
Perhaps very large areas of warm loft air?
Let us be thankful the surface temps are not below freezing or this could be Ice Storm II The not wanted sequel.
Here on the Wayne / McCreary line, things have almost stopped. Huge flakes around 4pm til 5:30. Nice coating on the ground, the temp is at 33 & I want more! Is it coming?
it changed to snow for hour and half snow, went back rain that wasnt forxasted.
I dont see how in the world we gonna get much snow. im no pro or anything but looks to me by looking at the radar most of the moisture is allready here. Still cold rain here in Morgan co too.
I, too, went into “moderation”, so will say again..
If it’s any consolation to anyone..I live in Bardstown…the “Land of Ice/Nada”…moderate rain w/ sleet balls and SOME lt. snow starting to mix in @ 36°….
I keep looking @ this thing and it still looks like….
E/SE flow of precip coming farther West…
NW flow of precip out of IL coming at us…
A little something-something coming now out of mid-OH to the S/SW….
Suddenly, I want a SAMMICH!;)
is it still snowing down the river??
Yes, true- but without the snow then rain where Rolo lives, we would not have the Rolo-coaster! 😉
Rolo, you crack me up! Again let us all be thankful the surface temps are above freezing. We would be dead meat if not.
Changed to a sleet/Rain/Snow mix east of Somerset…just when you finally get a good snow…it turns back to rain..LOL..this is crazy
Back to a steady rain after laying an inch here in Salyersville. Wasn’t it supposed to get colder as the night went on?
BIG FLAKES AGAIN LIKE EARLIER TODAY!!..gonna go check road conditions in the area, be back later…:)
Last post for a while.
CB said it would be heavy snow and 1 to 2 inches an hour likely. If we do the math and look at the snowfall forecast, it will only take a few hours of snow action to meet and even perhaps beat the snow map CB posted.
BTW: My family saw Transiberian Orchestra at Rupp last night. Two and a half hours of pure greatness:) BEST concert I have ever heard or seen:)
We are going again when they come back in the Spring for a new non-Christmas theme tour.
you have no idea how hard its snowing or how big the flakes are LOL and 0 road crews from 75 to my house roads haven’t been touched although when i was next to 75 it was more rain than snow but nothing but snow here and drooping trees
So much for dynamic cooling. How can forecasters not see WAA while making predictions? Isn’t there a map for that? This is beyond ridiculous. I feel more comfortable when forecasters call for a dusting because that’s when I feel we will get something. Always expect the opposite when it comes to Winter forecasting. Still rain in Prestonsburg.

That being said on all fronts weather, is it me, or does it look like the system is breaking up to the south? This could damage my attempt at rationalizing……
Not long to find out. Bubba bust? I made my forecast and must choke by it too- if comes to pas, of course;)
it still snow here. Since 3pm.
It absolutely poured snow for about 30 minutes, covered everything. Then changed over to a 32 rain and been pouring rain ever since. Looks like in pockets it has done this and other pockets it has stayed snow, particularly the higher elevations.
Jason
Perry County
32 degrees
rain storm
Sorry it was on my tv and assumed it was 4 lex they usually don’t care too much there if it isn’t 4 them
Maybe Chris meant 3-6″ of rain in the Lex area? 😉
This could be the biggest let down to snow lovers in a loooong time. Everybody needs to chill and start focusing on the xmas storm. This one is officially DONE. Heck winter dont start for 3 days…….That last little puny snow we had was the biggest snow weve had in somerset in 10 yrs….lol
Well, from what i can see there aint allot of moisture left to work with. But im no met but i cant see any chance of much more than a inch or so
I’m beginning to think the word “disappointed” might just be what we’re looking at…. :'(
i just want snow 🙁 at least you rolo have seen snow. its been a long 9 months. lol
come on Chris,Mitch,Shane,WXman, we need some thoughts here.
We have a good inch, with big fluffy snow still falling at this point. It is absolutely beautiful coming down.We are sitting at 32 degrees as I type. Still snowing moderately at this point.
Chris, what are your thoughts on this? More to come? I hope? 🙂
John Wall says its all about the Christmas Storm. Check these out, and who can argue.

The moisture system moving up from the south does not seem to have the same powwa’ it had earlier. Perhaps it is just a lull and it will fill back up.
The night is still young:)
Hopefully we do not get one of those “Nothing left to see folks, move along” posts by C the man Bailey;)
Asheville, NC already had between 7-9″ on the ground as of 4pm, and just to the north in Boone, they are expecting 16-20″ by tomorrow! Just doesn’t seem fair!
Coffeelady,
Its still snowing at your house? I’m 10miles east of Somerset and its switched to rain/slop mix. This is crazy
This is the ultimate bust. At least with the previous busts of the last ten years we had a 1 or 2 day notice. This time, we had a nice stretch of snow, only to turn into a typical 33 degree Kentucky rainstorm.
Snow again in Manchester!!!!!
Mother Nature has taken ALL the forcasters behind the woodshed for a while….lol With all the technology and tools we have for forecasting, sometimes sh– happens or in our case RAIN!!!!!
Well, on a positive note, the advisories have now been extended to the west!
Still Rain yet on Clark Co Line to LEX on US 60 37 degrees. Not to worry it will still snow. wait till you wake up in the morning and then look outside. Have a little faith. Chris said it wouldn’t start snowing in LEX until around 8 PM Chris knows best and I Thank him
Still coming down at a very good pace i would say 3 inches almost in Pikeville we are right at 33 mark pls keep that rain from coming back.
Snow mixing in again now. It was raining!
there isn’t WAA with this. the thickness values are still above 540 thus most of you still have rain thickness values should be falling belwo 540 in the next hour or two.
I agree…..just as the moisture exits from south to north…lol
Okay I will be the dummy and ask. Is the green on Radar rain and what is the red,I thought I heard Chris at 5pm wsaz cast saying something the red was for the big snow flakes? Chris can you when you have time tell what exactly the red is and is the green rain thank you Mr. weekend lol!!!!!!
It’s past 8pm and it’s still raining I don’t know about this one but I think the LEX-DOME has come back with vengence
Good point, just as we start seeing more frozen precip, the moisture looks limited.
Snowing heavy again in Corbin
Still moderate snow here in Barbourville. Luckily we didn’t have the switch over to rain. If this thing stays snow then we will have a decent amount. Still think we will end up on the low end of the forecast though. I think it may really be a bust forecast for the ones that started snow and changed to rain. We have a 3 or 4 inch head start and I don’t think there is enough moisture to catch up.
back to HEAVY 2 INCH PER HOUR SNOW OIIN MANCHESTERT FINALLY COLD HAS WON OUT, GOT OVER A IONCH IN 30 MINUTES.wooooooooo
so IOM SORRY BOUT BUST , but damn it went back rain for 2 hours and it will cut out totals down.
look at that diusturbnvce come from west going to really inhance the snow in SE and east ky.
Glad your getting snow again rolo. We are long overdue for a decent one.
the upper level low going to give us a boost folks, i see this snow falling now to fal;l thru early sat morning with 8-122 inches SE/E KY
i luv Chris THE LEGEND Bailey CLAUS
Sorry Rolo, but you are far more entertaining when it rains, snows, rains, etc…
Why does the fun have to stop now? 😉
tx bob i got excited cause the rain, but as ive posted the low throwing the moisture back into the upper level low to the west we might get burried yet. its 32 deg even here roads are beeing plowed.
it dont bubba, just took my meds, will be here all nite, it could get rowdy as the snow falls. I kick the hoodrats out and its just me a TOMCAT and BAILEY CAT.
ohh and plenty coffee since i havnt drank in years.
Ummm…look to the west. The precip is intensifying as the second system moves in. Lots of moisture for the cold air to work with.
Well, CB said earlier he saw no reason to change the totals, so he must have seen something out there. The night is far from over. It’s flurrying lightly here right now.
NWS/LMK just issued Winter Wx Advisory westward to include Nelson, Hardin, Larue, Hart Counties until Sun. AM…
WOOOOOOO-HOOOOO!!!!
(rolo..I need a Xanax….lol!)
Seriously, tho, folks…I kid you NOT…don’t lose HOPE!!!:) If I can see Bardstown getting in on something, surely you to the East of me will, as well!!!:) Have faith, ppl! The night isn’t over just YET!!!:):)
bobt..I just drove around town, down town about 3…once up around walmart and towards bimble 5-6″ easy!!!! and its still hammering down!!!!…
31*
3-5″ on the ground!!!!
knox co.
trees are weighed down it sure is a pretty snow..
It is still 35 degrees here in Irvine and still just rain for now at 826pm
Nothing but rain in Lexington.
Snowing more steadily in my corner of Barbourville. We never went to rain, but the snow really slowed after that burst of jumbo flakes earlier. Then, about an hour ago, the bigger flakes returned. I’m seeing only 1 1/2 inches or so at this point, but I almost wonder if the snow is so wet and heavy that it’s hard to judge amounts.
The radar kinda looks like it may change to rain here before long, or could be that I’m not reading it correctly.
First to admit I am dumb, but if three to six inches is to fall in the general area, why “weather advisory” and not “storm warning”?
Seems wires are crossed or vastly differing forecast expectations by different weather entities.
BTW, the precip from the south does look like it is not as concentrated, so we will see lulls in whatever actually falls.
In Richmond’s case- coooold chubby rain;) ATM.
Tim. About time we are in on some of the heavier stuff. Most of the time we are on here complaining that it’s raining here and snowing all around. Keep it coming.
deb sweetie i can send u some if u need them fed or regular mail very easy, i send my aunt a few like that. im serious. everybody needs 1 or 2 a day to just chill.
i know walmart parking lot looks like a GIANT SLUSH PUPPY MACHINE BLEW UP in it…LOL…
3-4 inches on the ground in Dorton, snowing very hard and the power is flickering and will probably go out.
Where is the snow in Lexington? Just rain is all we have had since around 2. I was hoping for my 4 year old that this one was the big one for making a snowman. She has been hoping since last year for a big one. Snow….where are you?
Thats enough with the snow Tim…you’ve had enough…LOL What a bummer…hour and half of HUGE flakes…get close to an inch..and then BAM!!!! back to rain…LOL
No kidding. I had to go there during the first burst of big flakes. All I needed was laundry detergent, but I got tempted by the snow boots so I’d have something warm to walk the dog in while we have actual, real, live snow on the ground. And do ya know…those darn things aren’t even waterproof. I put them on, walked the dog, came back and had to wring them out before I put them away. You get what you pay for, I guess.
shhh changed back here about hour ago i got close too 3 inches and it snowing a a 1 to 2 inch our rate and it will do so till early morning so get ready SE KY
Hey Rolo, Thats because I had a Christmas party to go to on Burning Springs. Rained while I was there and now that Im back home its pouring the snow!
sorry michael…:( I have noticed the upper low moving in from the west is filling in on the radar in western ky…so there is still hope…
Snowed in London then went to rain, all across 80 from London to Somerset very heavy snow. Get to Somerset and raining again @8:30
They are about 2-3 inch in Viper (Perry County). It is still coming down. It has been snowing from about 4:30!!!!!!!
LOL..true
Tim, get over in freaksters LOL!
Tx for the offer, rolo! I have to take them because I had a heart thingie several yrs ago which causes panic attacks (tornadoes, snowstorms, hubby, roll over in the AM and hit the floor, etc., outta freakin’ nowhere…??! No kidding..)
I am STILL seeing this storm as being waaay bigger than expected…I’m way farther west of you guys & stand no chance of it happenning, but ya gotta KEEP THE FAITH??!:)
36°/Lt. Rain/poss. Sleet
Bardstown
We have hovered between 36 and 37 for the last 5-6 hours with nothing but rain! So far just another giant washout!
i love looking at the radar sseeing blue to the east/south. pink and blue to the west. an pink to the north. and green in the center(where ilive) lol not.
I know the feeling. We hosted two Katrina kids for a year after they got wiped out. All they wanted was “the big one” Did not happen.
MITCH
What are “thickness values”?? And since this low pressure is obviously WELL east of us, aren’t we on the cold side? Yet it’s still well above freezing. So confusing
this dont sound good for much more accumulation…:(
short term forecast:
8:48pm..
.NOW…
…WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM EST SUNDAY…
A MIXTURE OF RAIN AND SNOW WILL CONTINUE TO FALL BETWEEN 8:40 PM AND
MIDNIGHT. MOST OF THE SNOW IS CURRENTLY FALLING IN THE HIGHER
ELEVATIONS ALONG THE VIRGINIA AND WEST VIRGINIA BORDERS…WHERE 3 TO
6 INCHES OF SNOW HAVE FALLEN SINCE 3 PM OR SO. AN ADDITIONAL INCH OR
TWO OF SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE THROUGH MIDNIGHT ALONG THE HIGHEST
RIDGES. ELSEWHERE…ONLY LIGHT ACCUMULATIONS OF WET SLUSHY SNOW IS
EXPECTED…WITH ONE QUARTER TO ONE HALF OF AN INCH OF RAINFALL ALSO
POSSIBLE THROUGH MIDNIGHT
It’s currently 37 in INDY……34 in Toledo etc.
Snow starting to mix in with the rain in Winchester 🙂
this is about what i figured, maybe next time we will get in on a bigone
This sucks :\
i agree.
OMG BUBBA
You’re RIGHT…….EXCLUDING clippers, >33=rain <32=dry! LOL......My dad had the audacity to TEXT me earlier and told me it was snowing at 2 inches per hour in Brevard, NC. He says he guestimates 8to10 inches have fallen there but it's stopped now. That's the largest snowfall for that area (for DEC) since 1971! (per local news) He said this is the biggest snow they have had in YEARS! Growing up I NEVER remember having any decent snow in DEC! The big ones always came Jan/Feb/Mar I'm so jealous I'm not back home at the moment 🙁
Not as much as the fact that I can’t watch the game tomorrow because Time Warner won’t pick it up and it’s internet doesn’t have ESPN 360
Still snowing pretty hard in Perry County, just north of Hazard. 🙂
LOL..that’s the name of the game around here…wait for the next big one. Except for the southeast, this one is OVER. Where’s all the moisture gone?
Only in KY do we get forecasted 6-12 inches of snow and in reality get a 32 degree rain. It’s just not meant to be folks. Clippers are all this state has to cling their snow hopes on anymore.
Same problem here too! Thats what REALLY sucks!! 🙁
Think it’s time for an updated forecast because they missed this one tonight. wonder what’s causing this to be so much more warmer than they thought? cant get it right all the time weatherman. My friends in Kingsport, Tn say they got 6″ and the power is flickering on and off.
well they sure didn’t miss it here…we’ve got about 5 in. and still snowing hard!!!!
I called LMK and they said reports around the LEX area have been 31-35 degrees. I guess people have faulty home weather stations…because it’s not that cold. 37 at my house in Lawrenceburg….ALL mesonet sites around me are at 37 including LEX…and it’s holding steady. Plain rain, no snow mixing in.
Folks, I am not seeing the big snow heading this way, but do see intermittent bands perhaps will hit us. Unless it is going to build strength again it looks like it is breaking up to the south and moved faster than planned to out north east.
Almost looks like two systems are fighting over KY with neither winning the fight or helping each other.
My guess now is that some will get the snow map, but it will not be in the smooth map layout, but real spotty. Not long to find out.
If this one does not put the final nail in the proverbial coffin of future snow optimism. NOTHING will;)
Well, the NAM and GFS both showed temps. above freezing at the surface all night long…so if “they” thought it was going to be a lot colder than this…then somebody misread the modeling.
Snowing good in northern clay. 🙂
Sadly, its looking more and more like time to throw in the old towel on this one…except for the fact that we need it to sop up all this water…and we’ll need it again for the rain storm coming for Christmas…
Char,it is still snow here too
I’m not giving up until Chris updates and tell us this forecast is a bust.
And no updates from any of the mets or from the NWS. You have to think there will be some big time revisions to some of the forecasts around the area (London-Corbin and points west). At this point..a slushy inch or so looks about right for southern KY.
Madison County (1 Alert )
Winter Weather Advisory
Issued by The National Weather Servicee
End time : 07:00 AM EST Sunday, Dec 20, 2009
…WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM EST /6 AM CST/ SUNDAY…
A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 AM EST /6 AM CST/ SUNDAY.
* RAIN WILL OVERSPREAD THE REGION THIS EVENING…WHICH WILL CHANGE OVER TO SNOW BY LATE EVENING AND CONTINUE INTO SATURDAY. HIGHER TERRAIN AREAS IN THE BLUEGRASS REGION WILL EXPERIENCE THE CHANGEOVER TO SNOW FIRST AND WILL RECEIVE THE MOST SNOW ACCUMULATION.
* THE HEAVIEST SNOW IS EXPECTED TO FALL MAINLY BETWEEN MIDNIGHT AND NOON SATURDAY. 1 TO 3 INCHES OF SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE BY SATURDAY MORNING…WITH OCCASIONAL SNOW SHOWERS BRINGING UP TO ANOTHER INCH OF SNOW ACCUMULATION BY SATURDAY NIGHT. DESPITE A BREAK IN THE SNOWFALL SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND POSSIBLY SOME MELTING OCCURRING…SNOWFALL TOTALS BY SUNDAY MORNING WILL RANGE FROM 2 TO 4 INCHES…WITH THE HIGHEST AMOUNTS IN THE HIGHER TERRAIN AREAS ESPECIALLY EAST OF INTERSTATE 75.
* TRAVEL WILL BECOME HAZARDOUS LATE TONIGHT WITH TEMPERATURES FALLING TO AROUND FREEZING. ROADWAYS WILL BECOME SLICK AND SLUSHY BY SATURDAY MORNING…WITH SNOW OR ICE COVERED BRIDGES AND OVERPASSES POSSIBLE AS WELL. TRAVEL WILL BE MOST HAZARDOUS IN THE HILLY TERRAIN OF THE BLUEGRASS…MAINLY EAST OF A LEXINGTON TO LIBERTY LINE.
It’s still snowing lightly and steadily in Barbourville. Is it possible it will turn to rain tonight and wash everything away? The acuweather radar is hard for me to read at the moment. It looks as if rain is moving in, and there’s this now-you-see-it-now-you-don’t pink spot that comes and goes over Knox county.
Prob. won’t be long…
Almost 5 inches of snow in Knott and we haven’t seen rain since around 4pm this afternoon. Pouring the snow still
No need for that Marsha, just look at the radar and ground observations. Everybody busted on this one.
Nothing but rain in Berea.
gotta love kentucky weather 😉
still moderate snow with 3.6 inches on my hill in CLAY COUNTY.
AND SNOW DONT LOOK TO LET UP ANYTIME SOON!!WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Chris Bailey… is it snowing at your house???…
Almost white out conditions here in Perry County…near the hospital. I haven’t seen snow falling like this in a LONG time. Very pretty.
the 540 thickness value is one of the measures used by forecasters to determine rain vs snow, over 540- rain or ice under 540- snow. It generally is a good rule of thumb in the wintertime.
In neighboring Wise County, Virginia, 500-700 people are stranded on the roads…shelters are opening up. Stay safe.
Don’t lose hope yet! It just started snowing in Lawrence County!!!
Kind of “same old song” since this was to be a winter storm warning and now a sporadic “advisory” but that is what the alert has been since this afternoon.
I really though this was the one. if this does not suck the life out of eternal optimism, I do not know what will.
Looks like it is a lot more spotty for snow totals and not as broad and smooth a snow cover- makes sense based on the moisture not looking as concentrated coming from the south.
Still, the alerts seem contradictory- outlooks showing several or more inches, but just an advisory?? Sounds like people were hedging their bets;)
Chris, This is not me posting. Obviously an imposter. Please ban evryone with the name marsha.
well IMO it will snow moderate snow thru the nite into early morning. its set in here in MANCHESTER COMING DOWN A GOOD RATE.
and its just a churning prcip is.
Yep, for some reason, central KY has become the winter weather transitional area- aka fence, dome, anti-snow zone, Bermuda snow triangle, no-snow zone, flake free, etc.
11 years and counting;):(
the radar is an approximation 3 different precip types radars in a set-up like this one will have all be different for you location one rain another snow and the final one a mix. i doubt you will switch back to rain.
You want to insult me? Is that how were going to play this? Let’s play then.
GO STEELERS!
Several of you are so disappointed, do you really want 6, 8, 10 inches of heavy wet snow that in all likelihood would result in you losing power for a day or two?? The ones with 5,6 in. of snow have already said their power was flickering.. I believe i’ll take the rain so I can enjoy a weekend of watching the cats play and NFL.. and of course a warm bed.
When was the last time we actually had a forecast for snow in the LEX area actually pan out? I mean 99 times out of 100 we either get way less than predicted or more often nothing at all. When was the last time we were predicted to get several inches of snow and got a nice surprise from an over-achiever. I guess we still have to go back to 1998, cause it doesn’t appear it will ever happen again… 🙁
I’m just north of the Hospital on 15N.
It’s been snowing pretty good here too.
Chris there at it again I guess they don’t like there name or something…
Lights flickering at my house just north of Hazard.
Spin city now;)
Some areas DID get the snow;), but once again, central KY becomes the magical land of cold rain, mix and “weather advisory”.
If anyone even pretends to know what the next system will do, I will laugh in their general direction:)
DO NOT BELIEVE IT UNTIL IT IS ACTUALLY FALLING AND UP TO YOUR SHINS. Nothing less will do;)
There will still be some heavy bands tonight and some will get decent snow, but the current maps and outlooks are extreme now- it would seem.
Well, shoot, my satellite just went out again. I have to clean out the dish again. I hope the power doesn’t go off.
I used to live in London, Ky. Moved to Sevier Co. Tn and figured I wouldn’t see much snow here. We had about 2 inches of wet snow today, and the temp is holding at 32F. While it was snowing here, it was raining further north. My elevation is only about 1100ft, so I’m really puzzled why it snowed this far south, and rained further north. STRANGE! We also had about 1.4 inches of rain before the snow fell.
Oh well, just thought I’d drop a line to my fellow Kentuckians. Maybe someday I’ll come home, but I think I’d rather move over to North Carolina. They seem to get the “big ones” any more when it comes to snow.
Ya’ll have a good night, and Merry Christmas!!!! 🙂
nam precip type maps show quick east to west changeover in lexington by 12 am a little slower back toward shelbyville and covington though.
Are you in an area that was forecasted to get that much snow and are just getting rain? Most of the reports I’ve seen show those areas are getting in on it???
Good to hear from another Kentuckian!
Well, nothing here in Somerset at the moment. Michael S, I have not seen any rain, but our snow has stopped, too, at this point.
I do see that the forecast is saying that snow will develop more overnight, so there is still a chance. We have about an inch right now, but it has melted off the roads, and they are just wet right now. Temp goes below freezing and all side roads are gonna get slick.
Hope Chris updates soon. I am sure he will give some insight. He always does.
Well, I’m 10 miles south of Frankfort and 20 miles west of Lexington…and the temp here just went UP two-tenths of a degree in the past 15 mins.
Perhaps my thoughts from earlier today were correct…the official/media predicted snow amounts are going to be WAY off.
My friend just told me it took her son an hour to get from Jackson to Hazard. That was a couple of hours ago. It’s snowed a lot since then. Everyone please be careful out there tonight.
This just in from the MET weather collective of KY:
NOTHING LEFT TO SEE HERE FOLKS, PLEASE MOVE ALONG.
We still may see a few inches, but my guess is the current snow map needs a large shift to the right;)
Good night!
Mitch-just read your blog. Good info and appreciate the insight.
Just came in from outside, 4-5 inches of heavy wet snow. I still have power, but I can hear the trees popping and cracking all around. Still snowing hard!
Just rain in Frankfort!!! I think I’ll give up on ever having a decent snow again. Congratulations to all of you who are getting the white stuff.
Still snowing hard. My lights just blinked again. Shoot.
Madison County – Berea
Moderate snow
34
Chris,
Thank you for the blog. I work at WKCB radio in Hindman. I live in southern Knott county near the Letcher county line and we have nearly 4″ of snow and it’s still coming down. Thanks to your blog, our listeners got a heads up on this storm well before the NWS mentioned it. The last few days we have talked on air about your informative web site. A lot of people were better prepared for this storm due to the info from your blog. Thanks again.
Hang on. You’ll probably get it later tonight.
I told people on WSGS Hazard Forum to come here also.
Large? Can’t be too large, seeing it on target in far eastern KY and those of us to the east. It ain’t over yet…
Thanks Char! I sure do hope so.
LOL…that has killed me “nothing to see here folks, please move along”…LMAO I love it!!
It is now snowing in Winchester. Tempature here has dropped a half a degree in 20 minutes.
Very true!! Thanks Chris for all you do! I live in Softshell in Knott Co as well and we have 4inches + and it is still pouring the snow!
We have moderate to heavy at times snow falling in Pikeville.Temp has dropped to 31.I just hope it doesnt switch back to rain.My sister and brother in law are in from Las Cruses NM when they left there in it was in the 60s they are bundled up like eskimos lol
glad to hear the snow heading torward the lexington area, watching for a burst of moderate snow for lexington metro around 1 am or so based on latest ruc.
In looking at the current (10pm EST) national weather radar, the Dome is quite apparent – there is snow in almost every direction form here, and here: good ol’ rain! Boone, NC is reporting 16″ on the ground and still snowing!
marsha is my name, why don’t you get a new name.
Starting to change over with snow rain mix on Clark Fayete co line on US 60 Temp is still 37.9 degrees
Hi all,
Didn’t make it home to Lexington from eastern Virginia–got stuck in the mountains of Virginia. Currently 15 miles from the WV border–over 14 inches on the ground right now. Thank goodness we managed to find a hotel..but I can’t tell you how many cars I saw in the ditch. Be glad this isnt happening in Lex–its a huge mess.
It started snowing heavier here at East Point about an hour ago, and is still snowing.
I still think Lexington will get some snow…I’m not a met by a long shot, but the map seems to show it moving that way.
where you been hiding????
Yep, my outlook yesterday was far east KY 5-8 inches with a sharp cut-off to the west.
The all of you warm loving people got me all warm and fuzzy and I fell for the most tricky thing off all -optimism.
BubbaG- BEGONE! form this point on, my Name shall be Dark BubbaG. Let it be written- let it be spoken- in whatever tongue you so desire.
People, this snowdome needs an enema!
Finally, the mesonet moves for Lexington! Down to 36-just a little more!
I was in Vansant Va today working I guess you are not near that? What is the closest town you are in?Glad you found a motel. In Pikeville still snowing have about 4 inches currently.31 degrees
Glad you are safe- I hope we get a few inches here in lex but where you all have there is dangerous. My folks live in Letcher co right on the Ky/ Va border and have been without power for a while now. Stay safe!
Snowing in Ravenna at a good clip!
Some good sized flakes mixing in here on SE side of Lexington. Hope to see it pour the snow before I get to tired and head off to bed.
Shew, I’ve been outside cleaning out the Dish. Lights have been blinking every little while. Internet went down and just came back up.
I’m gonna be worn out by morning and frozen if the power goes out. (Just north of Hazard)
We’re at an exit on I-64 in Covington, Virginia–about 15 miles from the WV border. Still coming down HARD–got about 4 inches in an hour and a half while we were eating dinner. Weather Channel says another 6-10 inches possible.
I think if we don’t get much out of this, it was a blessing in disguise, too many power outages reported from friends in Williamson, WV and Logan, WV
Thanks Chris for everything you do, your website is the best!
My sister lives in Hurricane, just outside of Huntington. I need to call her. She might be without power also.
Its snowing here in southeastern Berea, after a couple hours of rain/mix.Ground is covered. Hoping the numbers pan out….or better!
Hamburg Area, Lexington…rain starting to mix with snow, ever so slightly.
This isnt as fun as it use to be my power has went out twice about 4 inches here in Pikeville sitting at 30 degrees snow still falling
Where is that?
Nothing here in NW LEX yet.
Might be hiding in the dark if it keeps snowing, lol. As William said, its pretty bad over here. Our trip home from work doubled in time today, roads closing, a lot of trees and power lines down, some places nearing a foot of snow already.
Snowing hard here in eastern Clark County. Not sticking to anything yet.
WTH???!:(
This is one CRAAAZZZY storm?!:/
Just a while ago(swear!) it was Sleeting to beat the band…I was thinking…”Ohhh, Nooo..not AGAIN!!”(reverbs from last Jan..) Even saw a few big wet flakes starting to creep in…
Now it’s just RAIN and the dang temp is up 2° back to 35°…??!
I’m still watching things out of OH and IL…actually, according to the 4cast…it really wasn’t to change over until around midnight, anyway…??!(ALL SNOW, I meant..?!)
There’s still TIME…
We are just TOO ANXIOUS for this first snowfall, friends…that’s all it is?!;)
(So say the “voices” inside my head…)
Have had to clean my sat dish 3 times in last 3 yrs keep loosing signal
Snowing hard in Berea. Giant wet flakes.
Been all snow since about 9:45. Temp is 32 degrees.
Temp at my place on the south side of Lexington is 33 flakes are now mixing in!
DEBBIE
I don’t get it either. This is WHACKED!
I mean, the temp profiles make no sense to me based on what I “thought” I knew about the weather (LOL)
Andy
RUB IT IN! LOL
NO JOKE Im so mad! lol I was looking forward to watching it SNOW and UK play on my bday……NOT FAIR! lol Now my only shot is the snow and it is still raining here!
3 times in 3 years is rubbing it in?
Lexington temperatures have finally started a steady fall. Snow getting heavier in Hamburg Area.
Crazy Weather!! It has now changed back to rain here in far Eastern Powell Co. There is about 2″ on the ground here now. Why does it keep changing to rain?!?
hmm i thought i fixed that typo lol oh well 😀
snow starting to fall in the Tates Creek area of Lexington.
Snowing in Richmond! 🙂
33 and big flakes coming down in Southern Bourbon County
kinda like a waffle effect it seems
Doesn’t it just break your heart? They want snow so bad. The last dusting we had she scrapped every bit of snow we had off both porches to get her bucket full.

I appreciate MJ chiming in with a great explanation about what is happening. I actually checked out CB’s blog a bit ago and got a kick out of everyone jumping off ship totally since we haven’t seen a changeover to snow here in Lexington…and it has gone back to rain in spots down south.
The funny thing is…it was never supposed to change over here in the bluegrass until mid to late evening at the earliest…and the main kicker for our snow here in Lexington is the upper level support coming overnight…so the bottom line is patience people. The game isn’t even to half time yet!!!
These totals we kick out are for the ENTIRE deal…through SATURDAY…not Friday evening…so for folks on here (and those on CB’s blog if someone wants to pass it along)…chill out and wait until later Saturday until you give up and call it a bust.
More to come!
Come on Chris…throw us a bone of some kind, please……
Take a look at TG’s blog. MJ has a nice discussion about the switch between the rain and snow. TG also has some great advice.

Don’t feel bad at ALL..lmao..I have been a total “Snow-Freakette” ALL MY LIFE…ALWAYS known when it would snow, just flurry, ice up, etc etc…??!- My predictions usually are never ‘right on’ or anything, but dangit, I come CLOSEENUFFFORGOVTWORK…hehehe!;)Been watching this bugger ALL WEEK..seriously..?! I kinda “thought” something early on, changed my mind, then looked again, thought again..(to heck w/ those models..)?!
Right now, let the dogs out..first-hand look seems to be a COLD RAIN..but you can see where paws hit the ‘slush’ on the deck…?!
Not giving up…not yet…we’ve got ALL NIGHT & in some cases…TOMORRPW!;)
Snowing in SW Lexington. My family lives in Asheville NC and they have been without power for hours and have a foot of snow in the ground.
Mix in NW Lex
I live in south jessamine county South Brooke.. not a trace of snow Aany one eles seeing snow around
I guess be careful what you wish for we have about 5 inches in Pikeville power continues to go out oh no

FINALLY!!!!!! Rain…and snow mixed…..took long enough. SE Lexington. Temp 38.
Well it’s still raining and 37 here in Campbellsville…..I have to say this forecast is a major bust for most of Ky unless we get alot of enhancement from the western little system overnight…doesn’t seem likely since most of the moisture will be heading out just as the western system catches us with colder air…..there is still a chance we get some accumulation if this thing would just change to snow here but the chances are growing more slim
I checked it out and they cleared up a lot for me!!!
Here in Southern Montgomery County it’s snowing, but only lightly. However it is sticking.
looking like the gfs has done a complete 360 again for the christmas storm the trends in the expected track are wild.
I just turned on my t.v. to watch T.G.
and right then it said, No Signal. I give up! I’ve cleaned out my satellite dish enough for tonight. I just turned off the t.v. I just now got back on the internet. My power has gone off and back on a few times, so I kind of expect to lose it before the night is over. It’s pouring snow still just north of Hazard.
11:00 PM in Ashland and all snow now.
I wonder why Chris isn’t updating this blog tonight? Too busy or too tired? 🙂
Hey Dee- im glad you got home from the party safely-sis wasnt so lucky–got stuck on the big hill sideways– but alls well that ends well. Good night.
I’d say he’s busy at his station.
Moderate snowfall rate in Lexington (Hamburg) right now.
He just did a live shot outside in the snow that has finally started in Huntington.
i hate this. frankfort would be the hotspot geeze. no snow for us..lol
Snowing in Marehaven Subdivision near the Lexington Airport (NW Lexington)!!! Going to bed now! I’m pumped!!!!
We are @ 40° now in Bardstown, Humidity is @ 93%..??!-
I’ve NEVER seen Humidity that high before..?!- OK..don’t laugh..ONCE?!- We had a reading of 91% the afternoon of the April 3, 1974 Tornado….
Anyone have an IDEA on that??!
Finally, big white snowdrops mixing in with the rain in Paris.
TG says 8-12 for knox county by the times all said and done Sunday
Starting to snow in Georgetown now. Scott county….. Everyone panicking is funny, guys….. Watch, just go to bed and be surprised in the morning, its the best way
Yup, snow mixing in now in NW LEX.
Boy, sure is fun to read all these posts. I am wandering what is happening back in Nicholasville and central Kentucky. It figures, I had to go to Columbus Ohio during a snowstorm. 1-2in on the ground here in Cbus, with 4-6in total expected…I miss the big snows from growing up here 🙁 . I still love my Kentucky home though!
All snow now in SE Lexington. Coming down steady. Hope it does this all night….Night all!
I’m still hangin’ in there, as you guys should be, too!;) I’ll be headin’ to bed (don’t want to wake up the ‘babies’..kid, hubby, 4-legged crew..LOL!)soon…BUT…?!
Still a NICE CHANCE, folks…:)
Finally starting to mix in in south Jessamine – man it has taken its sweet time! Down 2 degrees in last 10-15 min. to 34.6.
Snow is moderately falling now, and there is a coating on the ground.
Hmmmm. Let’s see: A few possible inches of heavy snow, or six to twelve inches and have 50% or more chance of losing power….. I will take the couple inches, thanks!;)
As I posted earlier today, the big problem for east KY is a lot of weak poles and trees due to the ice storm and soft ground from the wet fall.
we are back to all snow in Somerset, and it is fogging it down once again….has snowed half an inch in the past half hour. Don;t know how long it willkeep it up on this go round, but the roads are now covered, and it is snowing hard, and big flakes again.
Temp is down to the freezing mark. Hope this round lasts for a while, too!
Still snowing in perry. my power is starting to flash. i would guess we have about 4-7 inches here, and the trees are really getting weighted down.
here on Cannonball dr in southbrook ( south jessamine mix started about1131 pm getting more and more snow
